  1. Out of curiousity, how many of you have those qualifications?

BKK Phil, Ken etc...you are all qualified to teach in the west also?

I am 'guessing' there's not a high percentage of Ajarns in Thailand who are actually qualified to teach in the west?

I am qualified to teach in the West, I taught in Canada several years.

Then I moved to China, where I taught at an International School for 5 years.

I have a Bachelors of Art degree, Graduate studies in Education, International Baccalaureate qualifications.

Now I am teaching at Walailak university, I wanted to have a different experience for awhile, teach older students than High School kids, live near the beach with air that is not polluted, live a quieter lifestyle.

I may go back to an international school next year, for the money. :o

  2. I had a wonderful time in Phuket this weekend, :D

A very special thank you to Fatter than Harry who cooked wonderful steaks :o and showed me around. An excellent host. :D

  4. I have gone freshwater fishing though not in the BKK area, I live in Nakhon Si Thammarat. It was at a fish farm I think is what it's called. There were several ponds.

It was fun, though more like shooting fish out of a barrel. :D

The best part was the BBQ fish afterwards :o

was just wondering if any of you guys had been fishing or knew anything about fishing around the Bkk area/central Thailand...in my years in Bkk i never went fishing cos i didnt know anyone else who did and didnt know where to go and what u could catch there...i do remember seeing thais fishing in one pool - i think it was off one of the sukhapiban roads but went burning past on my motorbike and couldnt stop cos i was late for a job...i'm talking about freshwater fishing NOT sea fishing. anyone any experience or know anything??

  5. I shall be spending new year in nakhon si thammarat town with my thai girlfriend. I arrive on the evening of 29 december and will be staying at Twin Lotus hotel until new year's day. I should welcome any suggestions of bars and other places of entertainment I should visit during my stay, and if you speak english, maybe we can meet up for a chat, as none of my girlfriend's family speak english, and my survival thai is not good enough to have a conversation.

I live in Nakhon Si Thammarat

So you're staying at Twin Lotus. Ritzy!

    Bars:

There's entertainment at Twin Lotus, dancing (not bad actually), live music, karaoke (an obligatory activity in Nakhon)

Country Home is my favourite place: live music with a couple of bands, quite nice, good food, (to any motorbike taxi you can say you are going to Country home and you will be understood)

there's a small bar behind Robinson's that is cool, live music. I forget the name.

Rock 99, near Thai hotel is where you will see most farangs especially on a Friday evening. Serves foreign (?) food. no live music.

There's usually ultimate frisbee at Talad park Fridays at 5:30PM weather permitting, then on to Rock 99.

(there are only about 60 or so farangs in the whole city)

    restaurants:

Pak Nakhon Sea food is great, food is excellent. Right on the river.

A&A has good desserts and foreign breakfasts, close to Nakhon Garden hotel.

Closer to Thasala, Sunrise is a restaurant right on the beach, excellent atmosphere. My favourite place to hang out most every day.

Thasala sea food (in Thasala of course) is quite popular.

The area is beautiful, much to see nature wise, if you have a car it is much easier to get around to waterfalls and the beaches. Krung Ching falls is gorgeous and also has rafting, Khiriwong village is interesting.

Big show with fireworks at Wat Phra Mahathat on New Year's eve, quite nice.

pm Wan, she knows everybody and what's happening in Nakhon.

  6. OK, here is a girly question, my nails are so soft they don't break they just tear, and easily. ...

    So, any nail cure suggestions??

I had the same problem then I bought nail polishers back home in Canada.

It is similar to an emery board except not abrasive.

There are three parts, one to smooth-out the ridges on the nail, one to buff and one to do a finish polish. The immediate result is a shiny nail, the long term result for me has been stronger nails. I never use polish on my fingernails now.

I found these same nail polisher files at Booth's, there they sell it in an all-in-one file package. One side is half blue and white and the other side is gray. Much cheaper than back home too. :o

  7. Though I am rarely home at 6PM, I can't stand the techno music that the aerobic class at the club's parking lot blares at full blast. It's only one hour a day but still, aaaaaggggghhhhhhh :D:D

But not as bad as in China, where it was always pleasant to go for a stroll or a hike at a beautiful hill, and have lively music blaring through loud speakers enhancing your nature experience. :o

    :D

  8. I check the forum from work, in between classes. :o

I usually leave the Thaivisa site open but some days I only have time to check PMs. I don't read the postings as much as I did when I was still in China, but when I am in need of a break during work hours, I can depend on the forum for some entertainment. :D

  9. In the South anyway, it is rainy season, although is hasn't really started to rain every day all day yet, though I hear it raining much more in Samui.

Today, in Nakhon we had a glorious morning, not a cloud in the sky, ocean perfectly calm but this afternoon it is clouding over a little bit now.

Rainy season is not the best time to visit :o

but it is better than cold weather :D

  10. The first time I went back home, I was so excited to tell everyone about my adventures in Asia but I was disappointed at their reactions or lack there of. :o

My stuff was not so interesting compared to my cousin Paul's adventures at remodeling his house (and still is more than 5 years later) :D

I have therefore given up on sharing my adventures with the people back home.

They just want to know if I am happy.

    Which I am. :D

  11. I recently returned to Montreal to see my mom, it had been about 2 1/2 years since my last visit.

So I indulged in some things that I associate with backhome. I ate some Montreal bagels, smoked-meat, sugar pie and poutine, I went shopping on Ste-Catherine street, I sat on a terrasse in Old-Montreal and people watched. I went to Rougemont to get some apples.

Although it was the first week of September, it was 10 degrees in the morning. :D

I dont care for cold weather much.

(and it is worse in the winter, I especially despise slush. :o )

I love Montreal, but I don't call it home anymore.

After over 5 years in Asia, I don't see myself living in Canada now.

I miss family and friends but I don't really miss the place. Not that Montreal is a bad place, quite the opposite, it's just that I enjoy living in Nakhon for the moment.

Who knows where I will be next year. :D

  12. Hi Gisele, started to wonder what happened! Sounds like everything is going well in Nakhon. How's China compare? I found, after living in Taiwan, that the Thais were rank amateurs in the pushing in front of the queue thing (NOBODY gets in line in front of me!). One good elbow usually does the trick :D

Next time you are this way, PM me first, Koh P has a few attractions too (and I don't mean the party or the beach boys, many of whom are from Nakhon BTW). :D

Life in Nakhon is very good, much less stressful than my life in Beijing. :D

    Compared to China,

it feels like there is nobody ever pushing or shoving here

and driving here is a breeze,

you can actually anticipate what drivers will do,

at least most of the time.

People actually stop at street corners and use their signal lights,

    most of the time.

Some familiar behaviour I have experienced though,

if I am trying to speak Thai and there is a Thai speaker with me,

people do the same as in China when I spoke Chinese if a Chinese speaker was with me,

    they ignore me. :o

  13. I've been coming here for about 3 months every year for the last 5 years.

Moved here in June of this year.

And are you loving it? :D

I absolutely love the life I am leading here in Nakhon Si Thammarat.

I love the beaches, the mountains, the waterfalls, the food, the people, my job, my house, my friends, and the fact that Nakhon sees few tourists. :o

And I am not so far from Samui if I miss Farangland. :D

    It's a good life. :D
