  1. This is certainly welcome. I live in HKT, but boy friend and his family hail from UBP and there other family members there. They have built a beautiful home on the Moon River (all tropical woods). So we go there fairly often. Previously this has been a total pain in arse and wastes an entire day if you fly. (two flights; lousy schedule). I have done all the things the poster mentions and recommend them highly. Also Wat Phou is one of the best Khmer temples to see (you can do it on the boat trip he mentions).

Of course, there's the Candle Festival (breathtaking). But, most of all, the real Thai food is fantastic and much cheaper than in HKT.

  2. USA, and i know this. Point is, if they see that tourist visa stapled into your passport will they automatically just go to stamping and activating it? or do YOU get to choose when to use it? They stamp that sucker first and my whole trip is blown. No phils, no cambo.

My experience in the past (I use a retirement visa) is that you can come in on the 30 day and not use the tourist visa until you want to (assuming it is within the time frame allowed by the visa). It is better to get a multiple entry tourist visa.

  3. i have a MacBookPro and have no problem loading PayPal. The problem seems to be that if you are online in Thailand you want buy something online and the vendor's web site sends you to PayPal, the page allows you to pay from your paypal account (assuming it is funded) but does not allow you to pay with credit card. We are using my paypal account (attached to a Thai Bank) for online bookings at our guest house in Patong. People who log in from, e.g., Europe or America, can pay with their credit cards. But people who log in from Thailand cannot. Since most (by far) of our online bookings come from the West, it hasn't been too much of a problem for us.

  4. Trung Nguyen is one of the major exporters of Vietnamese coffee, it's a popular brand for Overseas Vietnamese and I'm sure it is the taste you are looking for .

Trung Nguyen coffee is available at many stores in Bangkok and they even have a Thai website at http://www.trungnguyen-th.com/ with all the info you need. Enjoy!

Thank you very much! Trung Nguyen is the coffee I can get in USA. This is definitely the answer for me.

  5. Does anyone know where I can buy coffee (preferably whole beans) from Vietnam in Thailand? I am looking for the coffee with the rich chocolate flavor that you can get at, for example, Cafe Mai in Hanoi. A friend bought some for me from some place in Silom many years ago but I never could find the shop. I actually have made trips to Vietnam to get it but that was when i (thought) i was rich and i certainly am not now!!

I can get it back in the USA when i am there because someone imports it.

  6. My partner just bought a Vespa GTS 300. Vespa is a Piaggio product. We bought it from:<div>S. P. K. Samutprakarn Co., Ltd</div><div><p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.5px Helvetica"><span style="font: 11.0px Helvetica">02-3952416-7, 02-7038811-3</span></p><p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.5px Helvetica"><span style="font: 11.0px Helvetica">Perhaps they have what you want or can get it.</span></p><p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.5px Helvetica"><span style="font: 11.0px Helvetica"><br></span></p><p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.5px Helvetica"><span style="font: 11.0px Helvetica">Sorry, address on the receipt is in Thai and i cannot read it.</span></p></div>

  7. Thanks - I'll check Villa Market out tomorrow. :)

I think HomePro has them and I bought one (a while ago) in the back section of the old Hua Hin Shopping Mall. They have now moved housewares and items like this upstairs to the 2nd floor (accessible by escalators within the grocery section).

I am pretty sure Starbucks has them I bought one there a few years ago.

  8. I share your passion for this. Absolutely my favorite thing to eat in Thailand. Wouldn't dare try it at home. There's only a few places in Patong that do it and the best is Kaap Gluay. Going there tonight!

  9. I think the food is quite fine. Price very good 35-80 Baht (a few things higher). At least 10 shops, maybe 15. Two Indian; all the rest Thai. Good earthy stuff: kha moo, for example. Well arranged. A/C inside. But also can sit in open (no A/c) space at front of floor with great view of the beach. Very relaxing. i go there nearly every day. It is just what it should be and very welcome.

  10. Thai people don't go to seafood restaurants. They prefer river fish. If you want good Thai food go to Kaap Gluay in Patong. On the road going out to Kathu about 100 meters before the temple and the hill. On the north side of the street. Get Pla Chon. A good seafood restaurant is Patong Seafood (on the beach road just south of Bangla).

  11. I have non urgent question or two about romanization of Thai words in, say, English language Thai press and elsewhere.

    1. I often see both "w" and "v" used in, say, Bangkok Post (etc.). For example: "Wallop" and "Chavalit" There is no v sound (as pronounced in English, French, Italian-but not German) in Thai language. If the idea is to pronounce the "v" like an English "w", why does the paper use both v" and "w"? I don't see a "v" in the (not very helpful) Royal Thai romanization system or in any of the leading texts.

    2. Even more puzzling. Current transportation minister is called Sophon Zarum. What on earth is the "z"? How is it pronounced? What Thai character does it represent?

I apologize in advance if this has been covered in a thread already. My search didn't find it.

  12. I stayed at Phu Pha nam resort in 2004. I am afraid it exceeds your budget considerably (about 3200 for standard bungalow) BUT it is truly wonderful. Teak bungalows. On the edge of a mountain up about 600M with fabulous views. Superb food. At the time two hornbills were in residence and would sit on the balustrade as you eat. i couldn't recommend it more highly.

  13. Even if the built-in cellphone is not able to receive service in CM, you can buy e-books online at Amazon, download to your computer, and then drag-and-drop to the kindle when it is plugged into the usb port.

The new Kindle definitely will not have wireless capability in Thailand. But this suggestion is correct. i do it all the time in Phuket. But evrything is charged to my USA credit card. This might be an issue for you.

  14. Thank you for this info. 1. i saw and even touched by accident two of the big babies you filed at patong Beach within the last few weeks. But they did not sting. 2. i have been trying to understand what the invisible pin prick critters are for ten years. Most people aren't especially effected by them but they can bother me for 3-4 days and require a skin cream to reduce inflammation.
