  1. You can probably get a detached house or townhouse in Lampang within your budget if that is of any interest. There are quite a few teachers living in what is now called Soi Farang. Are you going to be teaching in Lampang? If so, the other expat teachers at your school should be able to help you get set up.

  2. I am not here ' Thai Bashing ' or anything like that. But who the hel_l in there right mind would want to be a Thai Citizen ??

The only benefit from it is that you can own land in Thailand. That is the one and only benefit. A Thai would still never see you as a Thai person.

Most people do it to secure their business interests. It has many benefits for company ownership.

  3. Are we including vote buying as democratically elected?

I guess we have to, as all parties, including the Democrats, buy votes as a matter of course in electorates where they consider they have a chance of winning.

  4. The only smartphone with large screen, Wifi, and 2 sim cards is the ACER DX900.

This phone is far to be perfect but is useful to test wifi connection when you travel and be able to use 2 sim cards at the same time.

You can buy it second hand cheap, less than 10000.

The touch screen failed on my DX900 this week so it has now won the triple crown - software, firmware and hardware do not work unless changed by the user.

  5. What is a good submergance level ??

I asked what was the depth that he would go beyond striking the water level. He repeated something simple he said before re not going more than necessary etc.

20 meters should be good if that is possible as there might be seasonal fluctuations from a shallow aquifer.

  6. Thanks Boksida.

I like the sound of the local guy, not because he is cheaper. In fact when he advises of his per meter price over and above the depth he would go to, I would be happy to pay to go deeper.

He seemed to only want to go as deep as needed, which is good i guess, but is there advantage in going that extra 20m or more than where he recommends to stop ??

No particular reason to go deeper if you have enough water but you may want to ask him what he estimates the standing (or static) water level will be. You need to have a well deep enough that you have good submergence for your pump when installed as the water level in the well goes down when pumping.

  7. Kind of lost me with the

up against some plough pushers from up North
    snobbery.

Veera is from Songkhla and was an outstanding opposition spokesman when he was in the Democrat (Abhisit's) party. Jatuporn is from Surat Thani and last I heard, both of these provinces are in the south. I am not sure about Dr Weng as he is relatively new on the scene.

Anyway the bar has been raised for uninformed newbie drivel but, watch out, there is plenty of competition out there.

I have nothing against Abhisit, he is a nice boy but I doubt if his elitist background will ever win many votes outside Bangkok. If we discount the 2006 coup, there is also nothing very unusual or illegal about how he came to be PM of a coalition government. If Thailand is to become a "failed third world state" as some posters claim, he is probably uniquely qualified to lead us forward. After all, he was born and raised in another one and knows what can go wrong.

  8. Mr Wiggle,

I concur with metisdead's comments - air drilling is the norm in consolidated formations. Depth is limited by the pressure rating on the compressor and you could use 10 meters of depth per bar of pressure as a rule of thumb. The other advantage is that you can see how much water your well be able to produce while the drilling is taking place.

    Re the other specifications:

6" bore with 4" casing should be fine for the yields you are expecting.

Glued joints will normally be OK if care is taken. I prefer to add stainless steel screws or pieces of PVC rod to assist with tensile strength but not absolutely necessary.

I doubt the wall thickness is 8.5mm but rather suspect it is the standard pressure rating (in bar) of a class of locally available PVC pipe. Class 13.5 is better but reduces the internal diameter of your well. Specifications are available here.

No problem with single phase power with motors less than 5HP.

The commercial details are up to you and your degree of confidence in the contractor. The local guy may have the better price because he is more confident on how deep he will have to drill at your location. At near to 30 baht per liter for diesel fuel for a thirsty compressor, I pity both the guys.

  9. I have the same need for a dual sim phone. I have had a G-net which was bulky and not so good on internet connections, a few of the Chinese mini Iphone lookalikes and an Acer DX-900. The Chinese phones all failed for different reasons so I bought the expensive Acer. On paper this does everything you would need, has two sim cards and uses the Windows Mobile OS. In reality, battery life is terrible and the manufacturer's ROM does not work but alternatives are available on the net. It requires an incredible amount of geekiness to keep it running and I would not recommend it.

    I'm still looking too.

  10. I've done that trip quite a few times. The route I found to be the quickest is Chiangmai-Lampang-Denchai-Uttaradit-Chatrakarn-Nakhon Thai-Dan Sai-Phu Rua-Loei.

The only tricky part is to turn left at the first set of lights you encounter after leaving Uttaradit behind.

  11. @bokside

  12. After over 500 000 Km all around Thailand ( mainly central, east and northeast ) I got stoped by the police more than 100 times.

When it is justified I'm happy to pay on the spot, usually 100 ฿, dl+ 100 ฿ readily prepared for a fast transaction - no silly talk, no excessive demand, no haggle, no quarrel - he likes it, we like it.

If I am not in the wrong, no money.

That's about my experience too and I have driven well over a million km. Sometimes I don't even have to bother with the licence and just give them the 100 baht, but a lot of them recognize me now anyway. I would say over 95% of the times have been a "fair cop". Even with a radar detector it is sometimes too late. Some of the more unusual experience have been:

    i) A cop at the Tha Phra intersection south of Khon Kaen who used to set the digital frequency display of his walkie-talkie to 140.0 and try to convince people his "radar" machine had caught them going 140.

ii) At one time I was commuting between Udon and Khon Kaen once or twice daily. I was quite bored with getting stopped but the police told me if I bought them a bottle of whisky, I could get a season ticket to go as fast I liked. When I went to the liquor store at the gas station near Nam Pong, the girl showed me to the section selling "police whisky" which was pretty much down market. I lashed out though and got them a bottle of 100 Pipers. They were waiting for me to come back and were good to their word.

    I love it.

  13. These are a few I took in 1968-1969 while stationed here.

Is the first photo the early stages of construction on the Chokchai Building? I think it and the Dusit Thani were the first of the tall buildings.

If I remember correctly, in the second picture the old British Dispensary was two doors down from the Copacabana Club on the left. This company has now grown into the BNH hospital. I hope you were not there for the same reason as my all too frequent visits. Dr Paddy Dickson used to claim he could identify the girl's badge number from the Copa when viewing the recently painfully extracted sample through the microscope.

  14. The Topper Club was still around when I first lived here 1980-1984. I remember they have pics of when Bob Hope visited or did his act there. I think that was in Ploenchit area? Anyone remember the Sani Chateau in Gaysorn and Mario's Pizza?

The thing I remember most about the Sani Chateau, apart from the late closing, was the table that seemed to be reserved for an older farang woman every night. She used to entice the shoe shine urchins under the tablecloth with lavish tips. I could never see what they did under there but they used to emerge, tip in hand, with disgusted looks on their faces and trying to clean out their mouths.
