  1. Provincial council elections are Sunday, for the Council and the President. Number 1 is the current president running for re-election. I don't mind the elections but those signs are deadly sticking out into the road and at head height on the sidewalks.

Nope, the elections are apparently on Saturday (23 June as on all the posters).

Are the bars closed on Saturday too?

According to Police (Chang Puek), bars closed from 6 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, until Saturday after elections. Supposedly closed until midnight Saturday but some places may open earlier.

  2. Located close to The Lanna Paradise and very gay friendly,

How old was that advert? IIRC Lanna Paradise was located where GT Riders is now and closed years ago, right? Apparently, the former owner recently died in Cambodia where he was doing a "leader of the gang" impression (Cryptic clue).whistling.gif

As I said, my comments will probably drum up more business than not, though I could say a heck of a lot more about this place and its farang backer that might really put people off, but that probably wouldn't be within the bounds of what's allowed on TV.

Indeed, can't wait to check out the whole package biggrin.png

  3. Even Thais who earn low salaries make up for it by selling Allianz or something in their spare time.

Well, I don't know anyone selling Allianz in their spare time, but I know plenty selling one "something" or another (hint: they're both vices whistling.gif ).

I disagree with elektrified on salary levels here, most make nothing like the levels he is quoting, particularly not in CM. Here are some typical salary levels published by the BOI:

  4. This thread reads like one of those April fools threads. You know those threads where the posters who don't get the joke post with great indignation and outrage.

I too have heard the rumours Beetlejuice refers to and they are very real with a clear purpose. There is also the politics of the ongoing feud between several groups who own big venues here. i.e The Mandalay crowd, The Fabrique Crowd and the Discovery. Infinity and Fine Thanks gang where some are using the current situation to disadvantage the competition.

But, above all, THERE IS A BIG ELECTION GOING ON FOR THE PAO. Getit?

Don't worry, normal service will be resumed in about three weeks!

Also, the bars that have been targetted most are the big student hang outs like Differ and Zanta - it's the start of term!

  5. Plenty of private "Security" companies in Chiang Mai; a lucrative business definitely only for the well connected. Any newbie "entrepreneurial spirit", especially farang, would most likely soon find themselves on the receiving end of a visit from the beefy guys with baseball bats.

  6. Given the rate at which businesses come and go here I think you've set your self a difficult and thankless challenge, But happy to help nevertheless. I would suggest including some links to non-commercial sites with comprehensive listings at the start would be a useful service to readers when the list maybe out of date.

For Chiang Mai, from a quick examination of the original thread, the following is a list of venues already closed, AFAIK (actually most of them!):

    • 2 Style Bar
    • Art of massage
    • Barai Male Massage
    • Bee Beez Male Massage
    • Chez Nous
    • Climax Male Massage
    • Coffee Boy
    • Cream
    • Cruise
    • Cupid Bar
    • Doi Boy
    • Dragon King
    • Dragon Pub (now straight karaoke)
    • Fan Club
    • Friendship Bar
    • HEUAN AI BAU/Golden Ball (now Sabai Di Santitham)
    • His Club (The Coyote bar - the Massage is still open)
    • Jackpot
    • Ken's Male Massage
    • Kudos
    • Mai Paeng
    • Maple Massage
    • MTV Bar
    • MUNRO'S
    • Naga across from Big C (Proper name Nagaraj)
    • Paradise Bar
    • Simon Cabaret
    • SpaRoma
    • TGB
    • Wood Bar

As Isanbirder mentioned www.radchada.com is a good resource. Also, Chiang Mai gay News has a couple of articles about what happened to some of the gay venues here: Whatever happened To...

When time permits I'll try to add some more details of current venues here.

  7. If it wasn't for the fact the songtheaw mafia won't allow big yellow taxis Joni Mitchell's song could have been the Chiang Mai anthem:

Don't it always seem to go

That you don't know what you've got

    Till it's gone

    They paved paradise

And put up a parking lot

  8. 400,000 tablets in 60 days.

If they work 24 hours a day that is close to 300 per hour.

Hats off if they can make that target.

Also be interesting to see where they get the materials from with current semicondutor lead times between 12-26 weeks! And can't imagine they would have risked pre-ordering too much given the uncertainty regarding this deal. BOM cost alone is probably 25million USD.

  9. About 11:45 saw a Thai airways flight (not sure if Boeing 777 or Airbus) apparently climbing out of CNX to the N.E. of the city with the landing gear still down some kilometers from the airport.

Could be a training flight or something but I don't believe otherwise it's normal practice? Or was it something else e.g. technical problem, emergency or (hopefully not) dopey crew?

  10. I think it should be a mall. That Rincome intersection is far too quiet and low in traffic. rolleyes.gif

Absolutely! Since there's so little traffic, they'll probably build right to the edge of the street, then rent out the inside lanes of Huay Kaew and Nimmanheminda to food carts tongue.png

Actually, I heard the opposite: work is allegedly due to start soon widening the western side of the superhighway from Rincome. They've already closed down the small restaurants that were near the intersection in preparation. However, the site I was referring to is on the Santitham side, across from the Jet Yod intersection, not Rincome.

Oh I see. But something ginormous is also going up on the North-West corner of the Rincome intersection. Anyone know what that is?

    Yep!

SFX Cinema and S One Mall; opening next year

Plenty more graphics of other developments too on this post on postjung

  12. Pagaii...The center I mentioned on Nimmanheiman and Huey Khaew is on land owned by Oishi Company and it is on hold...the one you mention appears to be very close to that one.

I think the location you are talking about is at "A" on the attached? Next to Kad Rinkham? The location I'm talking about is at "B" and the new conference centre at "C".

The site may be even bigger if they demolish a couple of very run down condos that are in one corner.

I know there are other "New Mall" threads running but since my interest is specific to this one thought I'd give it a bump.

So above I mentioned the run down condos on this site........ Guess what they've just started demolishing rolleyes.gif

Anyone heard anymore about plans for this site? Last I heard was new Mall, but then it all went quiet.

  13. Don't take my word for it, you can go see it yourself. Head up to the higher floors, where they games machines are, late afternoon, especially after school turns out during term time. Carefully watch the antics of a few elderly farang stalking their prey. One of the worst things about Thailand is going on right under people's noses with impunity, and with the gamekeepers always on hand to help the poachers.

But, what goes on there then? People just watch the kids play on the game machines?

And why Central KSK specifcially, isn't Airport Plaza (or Tesco & Big C for that matter) just the same?

I think eyecatcher gave you a big clue, or are you goading me? tongue.png I suspect the mods would be unhappy if we got into the details!

And before you ask, how do I know? Well, some of these sickos are so brazen they even brag about their antics.rolleyes.gif

As to other places, who knows, maybe also, but at KSK you only have to open your eyes to see what's going down.

  14. And I'm pretty sure Airport Plaza has the full name Central Airport Plaza.

Why is KSK also known as The Gary Glitter mall? Never heard that.

me too been here years - never heard it - certainly no Thais have ever heard of Gary Glitter so it can only be a stupid farang 'made-up' thing

I'd not hear that nickname name but I understand from whence it derives. Sadly the reasons are all too real.

  15. Double Fiber cable break somewhere, most of the Northern area from Lampang North has been out. As far as Chaing Rai, Mae Hong Song and Nan.

  16. No need for the technology, just take a drive around Santitham, some streets are unrecognisable from four years ago! Let alone maybe six years ago which is around the time some of the bigger projects started,.e.g. Santitham Plaza.

Of course, in the same time frame, upgrades to the infrastructure have been almost non existent. Only recently have there been some belated attempts to patch up the power and water systems. As to roads and parking, let's not go there...... rolleyes.gif

  17. I've just noticed RAM Coffee Bar is a new addition to TV sponsors in Chiang Mai.

    Anyone tried it?

    Any good?

I don't get the way TV runs advertising. Just had to turn off all my antivirus stuff just to see the advert. When most decent Internet security packages block stuff like that why would anyone waste money advertising?rolleyes.gif

Nothing against RAM coffee though, nice modern A/C place down on the river near Kad Moon Mai with some really good looking guys working there (go figure the rest of the equation). Good coffee and good beer- they change from coffee shop to bar at 6 p.m. And, if that's not enough, it's right next door to a notorious rub and tug so you can get the best of both worldstongue.png

  18. Ah, this thread maybe explains the conversation yesterday at the pharmacy in Tops (Chang Puek). Asked for Asprin and was told they don't have it. Yet I could see the packs I normally buy and pointed to them to be told "that's not aspirin, that's Bayer" rolleyes.gif
