  1. This fits in with my feeling that the Thai voters have expressed a desire for blood lust. They voted for Samak, what were they "thinking"?

You're being very dramatic here. I'll tell you what most voters were thinking. They were thinking that they should vote for their favourite candidate...the same as most people around the world do when they vote.

Perhaps you're one of the few who vote for the canditates you don't like.

Now we have got the bottom of it. The electorate have done what most voters do in elections - they vote for the person/people they LIKE. Not only Thailand but UK. USA, X-Factor etc, etc. Other countries also lack the intellect to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of each party's manifesto. In the UK/USA I am sure the same "parent making decisions for incapable/unqualified/uneducated offspring" can be applied. I would far rather see somebody eligible to vote actually exercising their democratic right/duty.

I maintain that, however you wish to disect the results, we have actually seen democracy in action.

  2. My wife reports that in our village in Chiangrai province PPP did not hand out money but two other political parties did.

She also reports that in the last election (the one that was anulled) TRT did not give out any money but some of the other parties did.

    Chownah

Just spoken to girlfriend in Buriram and she says that no one was handing out money this time. She was (rightly) proud that this was a positive change from the last election. She still voted PPP but did so after considering all the candidates IMO she has had a democratic experience.

  3. Traveler, if you want to be politically correct, you should avoid comparing people's intellegence.

It does matter in ability to make choices with far reaching consequences, though.

I'm afraid people made a conscious choice now, you can't blame it on lack of knowledge anymore.

They DO want corrupt government, they DO want to get paid for votes, they DO want to abolish the rule of law, not that it was strong in Thailand.

As a friend of mine said, just because the Thais eat fish bones it doesn't make it right.

  4. Thanks again.

The responses have enabled me to ask a few more questions and I now understand that the lease is infact 30 years and the rent 40k PER YEAR.

This does seem to make more sense based on the replies received.

Advice seems to remain the same - take the lease to a lawyer as she should have a case against her ex for the unpaid rent. Point also noted re registration of the lease.

  5. Thanks again for all the comments.

I am confident that I am not being set up for anything and I believe the question from my girlfriend was a genuine attempt to find a solution for the other girl.

From the comments received I believe that (all things being equal - dee123, I accept that I only have a small part of the story) the girl has "rights" and can pursue a claim against her ex-boyfriend for non-payment of rent.

My advice will be to suggest that she takes a copy of the lease to a lawyer (although I would be interested to know if/where the free legal advice can be obtained).

  6. I can't see anything in the OP that says it's the girl living in the house, perhaps that should be established.

Thanks for the comments so far - the girl is not living in the house, that is the whole point. The ex-boyfriend is living there with a new partner, following the split, and no rent is being paid.

Her grievance is that she supervised the house building and once completed the boyfriend left her for someone else.

  7. A friend of my Thai girlfriend is looking for basic advice on what to

do/where to go regarding an issue involving her ex-Farang boyfriend.

Land was bought in the girl's name and house building was funded bt

boyfriend. The usual 20 year lease, at 20,000 Baht per month, was signed

    in favour of the boyfriend.

By the time the house was completed the couple has split up and the

girl asked for some financial compensation for the

    relationship/over-seeing the house build.

This was rejected by the boyfriend who offered nothing.

Does she have any legal recourse against the ex-boyfriend and/or can

she make any claim for payment of the 20,000 Baht per month due, but

    never paid, under the lease.

She has limited means and is worried about incurring legal expenses

with no guarantee of getting a positive result.

I am sure that is a fairly common problem - can anyone provide simple advice ?
