  1. When the criteria is freelancers then Gullivers can not be touched. Your avatar is perfect. read mine.

The criteria was girls that work for the bar who play pool for free. Thanks for insults, now go learn to read.

  2. Anyone know what the deal is with BGs? Obviously there are some that are staff, playing with punters in much the same way that they'd play connect 4 etc, but what I'm interested in are the freelancers, who play in the hope of picking up fellas. Someone told me there are a lot that are employed by the bars themselves, so aren't technically speaking freelancers - anyone know whether that's true or not? If it is true, and presumably it'll mean they play for free, then I'll feel less guilty about them losing their 20 baht so quickly.

    Gullivers

  3. not on cd but has been on here before,

    Thanks for that.

    The best I've seen, to-date. :o

I just was take a close look at the map (link posted above) and have to say that the map isn't true. Even some of the names of some streets are wrong.

Final, more bad than the Map Magic from 3 years ago!@

    Cheers.

How is this one? Looks fairly detailed to me.

  4. Foolish? Pissing my money away? Says you. Have you every been naive enough to buy and soon after attempt to sell a near new computer expecting to get even close to all your money back? If so, how did that go for you?

Yes, using ebay, craigslist, computer forums, and all went well. But it's understandable that if you haven't done for any reason, you wouldn't know what options are available. It is (or was at least) very common for people to buy computers from Dell using one or more coupon codes, then sell the item on ebay without even opening it for a nice profit. I would say people who are buying, selling, and trading computers and computer hardware are probably the largest community on the net. This wouldn't be so if there was a good chance of getting a raw deal. But if you know what you are doing and what you are buying, the chances of you getting screwed are drastically decreased.

As for the "full warranty" - the original purchaser would have enough trouble trying to get anything out of that in Thailand.

Do you say that from experience? With all of the HP, Acer, Asus, etc., repair shops available in Thailand, I've had a much easier time having in and out of warranty repair work done than back home. Same with my Samsung mobile phone.

Do you really disagree with my advice to the OP, or you're just trying your hand at being "controversial" and "challenging"?

Yes, I really disagree with your advice, though I expressed it in my typical sarcastic way. The OP has the right to read everyones opinion on the matter, even if you don't agree with it.

    Cheers.

  5. The 18000 THB computer you buy today is worth 9000 THB as you step out the dealer's door.
I would NEVER buy a 2nd hand computer from anyone

But you can apparently save yourself 50% buying a computer that is only 1 day old, with full warranty. Seems foolish to be pissing money away when you're an expert on resale values.

  6. offering UBC for a once only fee of 5000 baht

Still overpriced for the garbage they offer. I'll stick to downloading/streaming everything I care to watch via the many options available online.

  7. I also heard Sports Academy is closed all week. Can anyone confirm this? Trouble with the police or something?

No loss there then, the place is now a shit hole. Rude waitresses, warm & rotten beer, air con switched off - I was even sweating in shorts n a t-shirt.

Really? The waitresses are always extremely friendly to me and anyone I go there with. They would have to be, they are working primarily for tips. Never a problem with beer being warm, and I would just send it back and ask for a cold one if it was. Never felt hot either, unless in the smoking closet. It does have a distinct feel, but of the few true pool halls around here, Players is the only one that even comes close to being a shit hole in my mind, though it still has a ways to go before being that bad.

  8. For moving system folders, you can usually right click, go to Properties, and then Location and change it to wherever you like.

With Outlook it's pretty easy to point to your existing pst files, no need to start fresh each time unless you don't want all of you old data.

As far as installed apps, it just depends on if they've placed everything into a single root folder or made new registry keys, added or updated system files, etc.

There will always be some programs you have to reinstall upon a fresh install of Windows, such as MS Office, Adobe apps, drivers, system utilities. I don't mind as it's a chance to download the latest versions. How often do you need to reinstall Windows anyway? I usually manage to get by for at least couple of years before I find it necessary. Since I don't install so much garbage anymore it might be even longer.

  9. Last August Jedi assembled my system (a Intel Quad Core). They did not add VAT to the bill (their prices already include VAT). Before assembling, we draw up a list with the prices (which were a little cheaper than Busitek) and we came to 42,000 baht. Then they gave me an additional 250 baht :o discount. In all it was about 1,000 baht cheaper than Busitek (against their publicized prices).

I would say I rate Jedi very high .... they are not so snobbish as Busitek ... plus I went back to them three or four times (one time for overclocking, one time for a faulty motherboard) and they performed their service free of charge.

Thanks sniffdog, sounds like a quality shop. As long as I know they provide good service when there's an issue I won't hassle them much on price, but I just wanted to get an idea of what people have been paying so I don't spend 1000's more than necessary.

  10. Yes, I would say using a HDTV is the same as using a LCD screen.

You're just going to confuse him. You have a Full HD set with a resolution twice that of a 720p set. Apples and oranges when it comes to using a TV as a monitor, just 1 - 2 feet from your eyes. Think about it. 1280x720 might look good on monitors ranging from 15" - 17", but do you really think it can scale all the way up to 26" and still be as sharp when looking at small text? Best way to decide is to hook a laptop up to the 26" TV in question, get up close to it, about 2 ft, and see if it's useable without your eyes bugging out.

  11. Anyone know what the deal is with BGs? They're just trying to get your attention, so since playing pool didn't do it, they figure pouting or acting like a little brat will. They either want you to feel bad and go talk to them, or they are honestly mad that you cared more about beating them than flirting with them. You just have to ignore it, goes with the territory.

The farang who writes that Bangkok Good/Bad Girl blog described the situation well by saying (s)he didn't pay much attention to the guys playing pool at Gulliver's as they are more interested in the pool games than the girls. I guess that's what happens when it's so in your face in those areas. I know if I were back in the states and there were attractive girls playing pool with me, winning would be the last thing on my mind. But here, they're just a nuisance.

The only place I play once in a while where I know that at least some of the girls are working there is Hillary II, and likely the other Hillary bars which I haven't really been to. At Gulliver's, Bully's, New Wave, Sanook, etc., they're all just freelancers.

  12. i went to nest tonight and it is a lovely place, great drinks and decor etc. but what horrible music! they must have bought one of those 90's love ballads collections and put it on repeat! i mean, michael bolton??? why open a hip place like that and then make your customers want to slit their wrists after an hour there? someone should tip these guys off... otherwise i would have given it a rave review!

Wow, that sucks. Hopefully it was a one night DJ issue, as I was planning on heading there this weekend.

  13. Hi All,

I finally did it. I backed up all of my data then deleted Volume 2. I tried every way I could to increase the size of Volume 1 from 75GB to its full size of 298.1GB, but to no avail. I ended up deleting Volume 1 and creating a single Volume at the full capacity of the drive and will begin the process of reloading my drive and setting up partitions tomorrow. I appreciate all of the input that you guys have provided.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to separate the operating system from installed programs? I would like to have a boot partition with nothing more than the operating system and install all of my programs, data etc. on separate partitions. I know that it can be done, but have never found any instructions as to how to perform the operation.

    Thanks,

    Pattayadavid

I don't know if this is what you're actually looking for, so sorry if I misread you, but here goes...

When installing an application, you know all all those prompts that you click Yes, Next, or Continue on? At some point they were asking you where you wanted to install the app, so next time read what they are prompting you for before clicking yes or next, and change the location for installation when prompted to confirm the path. So instead of c:\program files\app name\ change the path to d:\app name\ or d:\program files\app name\ if you want to keep them all under a single directory. Replace d:\ with whatever partition you are looking to install your apps on.

  14. I am thinking of buying the Sony 26" TV to use as a monitor at about 18000thb in Power Buy Rayong, it has all the inputs, HDMI which it has can be connected to DVI with adaptor and most importantly it does not have a 'TN' panel which almost all 22inch displays have and is the most basic panel you can get. Basically low quality as panels go.

Not so long ago this TV would have been over 30,000thb.

You're thinking of using it as a monitor for normal PC type work? 1366x768 on a 26" screen would give me a migraine in seconds trying to read text on it from a normal desktop monitor distance.

  15. I'm after bars more than poolhalls though. I paid 120 for a singha in Hillary's II tonight - yikes!

Is Hillary II the one on the same side as NP? If so, I was there playing pool until about 9PM on the back 2 tables. Went to BIH afterwards. Actually made of day of hitting the bars after reading this thread. First BIH, then Bully's, then Hillary (II?), then back to BIH.

Dotcom, Sports Academy is quite a bit better than BIH, and both are way better than players IMO. If you haven't been there you should check it out after they open their doors, which will hopefully be Satuday from what I've heard. Players doesn't have comfortable seating or a good layout, too much wasted space on the bar sized tables, too many ugly ladies trying to hit on you, and just a general unfriendly atmosphere. Same feeling I got in New Wave after spending a bit of time there. Oddly enough, I found Players from some shaddy guys at New Wave. Seems the same type of people frequent both, and while it may have taken a while, I realized I didn't want to be a part of that scene. Only on my latest stop at Players did I not encounter the usual clientele, but that just helped me realize that the other reasons I mentioned will keep me from ever frequenting it.

  16. Forgot to mention Factory on Sukhumvit between Soi 5 and Soi 7. They have a few tables upstairs, nothing great though, and it's usually pretty empty.

If you want to get out to Suk Soi 20, Flyers is on the corner and has 2 floors with about 10 tables or so. Queens Park is located up Soi 20 on the right hand side and has many small bars, most with a pool table, some have a few.

I also heard Sports Academy is closed all week. Can anyone confirm this? Trouble with the police or something?

  17. Does the camera require SSL to work? Perhaps it's trying to redirect you to an SSL page and you haven't forwarded the correct port.

When you're connected directly to the camera (i.e. not behind a firewall) does it forward you to a new port after logging in?

Edit: You should also check if the camera is using TCP/UDP and you have it configured correctly in the firewall/router. All streaming video apps that I know of use UDP. So it may require certain ports over TCP and other ports over UDP.

  18. Bottom line, is their any difference in the functionality of a 2 volume Raid 1 system as opposed to a single volume Raid 1 system utilizing 2 partitions?

The only difference is that you are limited to creating partitions within the size of the volumes, which appears to be fine with you.

2008bangkok and Crushdepth are both correct right in that there is no point in having 2 volumes, BUT, you have already done it. So your choices are leave it as is or blow out the existing volumes and create a single volume. Creating a new volume would mean reinstalling the OS, unless you want to try backing up the system partition and restoring it, assuming you have tools that can reliably do so on a RAID volume. It's simply a matter of spending the time to do something that will give no benefit over the current configuration.

  19. I can't decide whether to continue with this setup or to delete Volume 2 then create a second partition on drive 1 which will then be mirrored by drive 2. I would think that using 2 separate volumes would work well when installing 2 operating system ie. both XP and Vista.

Right now you have 2 RAID 1 volumes, each with a single partition, 75GB and 223GB. If your current 75GB volume already has a 75GB partition on it, you cannot just create a new 223GB partition on it as the volume is full , you need to expand the volume to fill the entire disk. If volume expansion is possible or not depends on your controller, so you will have to check the documentation. If it is not possible to extend the volume, your only option is to leave it as is, or delete the volumes and create a single RAID 1 volume across the entire array of 2 disks. Again, if you're looking to have a 75GB partition and a 223GB partition anyway, you already have that, you'd simply have it again in a single volume after doing this procedure.

PS. By setting up 2 separate volumes in Raid, would I not have the option of setting, let's say, the boot system volume as Raid 0 and the storage volume as Raid 1? Am I way off base here?

Yes, you would be able to do that, but do you really want to? You would have some more space available to you using RAID 0, but no redundancy and a small performance improvement, if any, especially using an onboard consumer based SATA RAID controller. RAID 0 is useful for large write operations, and your system partition is not going to be writing that much data to disk to see much of an improvement. Depending on the controller, RAID 1 can see a boost in read performance which is what I assume you are looking for with your system partition.

  20. Been a while since I've dealt with this, expecially with non SCSI controllers, but I'll try to help.

A volume is a container which you can create partitions in, as you have seen already. I'd just leave it alone as it makes no difference with your setup at the moment.

You'd have to look up the documentation on the RAID controller to see if you can delete the second volume on your first array, and expanded the first volume, all without losing data. I wouldn't take the chance or waste my time as it is of no real benefit to you at this point.

In your case, the only benefit to using a single volume is if you decided to expand your system partition at some point, but I haven't tried that with Vista and am not sure it's possible yet with the tools available, though I'd think it would be at this point. In that case you'd have to either leave some space in the volume or delete/resize any other partitions in the volume to make room for the expansion.

  21. Crap, if I buy this thing I'll just have to go out and get an xbox too. Was thinking about getting a larger unit though, in the 42" - 46" range. That would cost quite a bit more though.

  22. Have just had a mail from a relative in the UK in my yahoo account to tell me that they are able to read my all of my mail from my personal inbox citing a forwarded 'funny' attachment FROM the UK, via a friend in Thailand (I know, it gets complicated ...) as being the culprit.

Huh? If you clear this up maybe we can help you better.

Was your email account password sent to this relative via an email from your email account?

If not, how did this relative receive your password?

    OR

Are emails being forwarded from your personal account to this relative?

The way you have this worded it's hard to tell exactly what is happening here.

  23. Since there is already a thread going about Cali Wow prices, and it may be of help to you too girlx...

I have 1 year + 1 year option to renew at 2,000 baht contract with them which I have to renew in August at the Asoke branch. They have approached me many times about a lifetime membership upgrade for a small sum which always give me a bad feeling that they are desperate for cash and may be trying to hit up their existing customers before they go out of business, so I've never bothered. I also hate the fact that the music they play is very bad and very loud, meaning I have to turn up my ipod volume way too loud to drown it out, but continuing with them is probably the best deal I can get at the moment.

Has anyone recently signed a long term contract with them for a good price? I'll probably look into upgrading to use any of their branches as I'm moving around a bit at the moment, but that depends on how much they want.
