  1. Reposting this from the American Football thread since more people might see this here.

For the Superbowl, if enough people are interested, we could get a large room at the Emporium Suites Hotel. Have a door charge to cover the room and alchohol (or just make it a BYO setup), and order from room service. They could even ask for a catered setup and have a buffet going. Perhaps friendly poker games and other such activities before the big game starts, make a whole night of it! Let me know what you all think.

If there's enough interest here, I'll make a new post in the Bangkok forum and ask everyone to let me know how many people there will be in there group so we can get the right size, and possibly number of rooms. If we get too much interest we could always get some conference rooms with cattering, but I don't know if they'd allowing smoking in there, and we wouldn't have as much privacy for stuff like poker, ladies(?), etc.

  3. Flyers is right on Suk at soi 20 I believe. Yes, always looks pretty empty.

I forgot about Bully's, on Suk btwn Soi 4 and the Marriott. They have 3 or 4 tables, winner stays on. Only been there a couple of times and don't really remember how good the tables and cues were, but it's worth a check as it can get quite a few customers in there, especially when there's a game on TV.

Players has two 8-ball tables, winner stays on, and apparently the right most 9-ball table is also winner stays on (at least the last time I was there). Crowd there can sometimes give off a bit of that New Wave vibe so I don't go there all that often.

I'm free on Friday Murf, but have to pick up a guest at the airport on Saturday so the rest of the weekend is no good.

  4. Wow! Great performance by the Giants against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers...the Giants defense really shut down the Bucs and Eli Manning turned in another good performance to followup his great game against the Pats last week. Looks like the Patriots game got the Giants believing in themselves. Don't know how they will do against Dallas but they've already done better than most have expected.

They did look good, but I can't imagine things looking the same against the Cowboys. The Pats game was surprising though, so maybe they're on a warm/hot streak at the right time.

Oh, and I wanted to check out the replay at Gulliver's, but things prevented that, leading me to have an ever better time at Hanrahan's(sp?) on Soi 4, where we had the upstairs sofa in front of the TV to ourselves, so nobody to come by and spoil the game for me like a couple of pricks almost did while getting off the BTS on my way there. :o I had to stick my fingers in my ears and mumble loudly to myself so I wouldn't hear what they were saying, much to the amusement of my girl and everyone else nearby. I'd gone the whole day avoiding anything and everything that might mention something about the game, and almost had it blown 30 minutes before it aired.

  5. Also have Sanook Bar in the alley between Soi 5 and 7. Only 3 tables though so there can be a bit of a wait when it gets crowded. Looks like they spruced the place up recently, but haven't been there in a couple of months. They are also open later than most, until 3 or 4 depending on the number of customers there... that was the case a couple of months ago anyway.

I'm also looking for new places to play, winner stays on. Flyers on Soi 20 is nice but not enough customers, and don't really like the Queens Park bars. Mostly been going to BIH recently, but it gets expensive and boring after a while. Sometimes you just want to relax and play/meet different people. Gulliver's is probably the best for that due to the number of tables, but 70% of the customers are the same people there night after night so it gets old too.

If you find anything interesting, or want to play, shoot me a PM or update here please!

  6. I don't think anyone has explained away this anomally yet . . . . .

The anomally is that the price of one of the items is doubled when added to the shopping cart, clearly a mistake on chefxp's side, but not some grand conspiracy by them to rip their customers off. I checked many items, and made an order myself, and none of them had the same effect. If you find more that do that, feel free to let them know via email, they may send you some freebies or give you some discounts.

I did start a similar service back home, and only charged 3 - 5% per order, and a small fee for the fax of the order to the restaurant. There was no fee to the customer, only the restaurant was charged. BUT, the restaurants delivered the food, we only took the orders, so these services deserve to charge more since they are in the delivery business, not just the order taking business.

I don't want to start ragging on either site, but I think FPB should work on their pricing if they don't want to see their customers moving to chefxp. There is no reason to argue with those that love FPB and refuse to use chefxp though. Does Amazon always have the cheapest prices? No, but people will continue to use them for other reasons.

BTW, my food from chefxp did come the other night, just as the gf was dialing McD's number (thank god they came!).

  7. Order from ChefsXP about 30 mins ago, but I don't think I'll be getting my food. Called to restaurant directly to clarify the order and they said they are closing the kitchen, no more orders. I explained that I order over the net and they said same thing, kitchen closed. I then got an email from chefsxp saying they are going to pickup my food, so hang tight. I'm not holding my breath, think this will be a McD's night.

  8. Such as? If you meet the qualifications listed.....then you can apply and receive this. Its not rocket science.

Please tell us ( since you have clearly done the homework ) what else is there to it?

As I said, the Elite card is designed for people conducting regular business in Thailand, not for tourists or retirees.

    No.......you never said. :D

Whilst the Thai Elite Card is AIMED at the business community..........it is NOT a requirement that you be in business. You do NOT have to show any company papers..........contracts of employment etc. You can obtain this on the basis of looking at opportunities.

The qualification for obtaining this has already been posted.............but point No.6 may be of some concern. :D

I'm interested in knowing who declares such things. The Thai goverment? :o

If I'm wrong, then prove it and finally maybe you can provide some useful information on here.

Why don't you stop asking everyone else to do your homework for you? Several people have offered a solution to your problem and you have only managed to be argumentative with them. Not a great way to get more people in here willing to help you, though I think most of your options have been presented to you, yet you don't seem to be interested in researching them further.

    Cheers

  10. Tropo, if you are actually wealthy, why not call one of the legal services advertised here TV and ask how you can stay here for a year or two. For a whopping $1,000 USD you can have a non imm B visa and a work permit good for 1 year with only an annual visa run involved.

Don't worry, I know exactly where to get dodgy non-immigrant B's, and you won't find any legal services advertising them.

I don't know of these dodgy visa's you are referring to, but what I am speaking of is 100% legit. You apparently haven't even inquired about this option with one of the legal services. Being that a consultation is free, I can only assume that you either

    • have no such problems and just enjoy killing time on here
    • are too lazy
    • are not wealthy, and beyond that have problems coming up with 35k baht

For someone who is wealthy and on a long vacation, it should certainly be worth your time and general peace of mind to go the easy route and not have make visa runs every 30, 60, or 90 days.

Hope you find a solution to your problem. Cheers.

  11. Where do you fly around BKK? Does any old park work or do you have to go someplace out of the way, or an approved location?

Also, has anyone found one of the little 2 channel helos that they sell all over for 500 - 1000 baht that won't break in 5 minutes (or less)?

  12. My friend just called me and said she wants me to go have a look at her son as he has been sick all day. Last night he smelled something burning outside so he opened the front door to check it out. He got a whif of something then went back inside and felt a headache coming on, so he went upstairs to go to bed but stumbled a bit and started having loss of vision. He didn't tell her this until today as she called him several times from work to see how he was feeling and tried to find out what could have happened. When she left for work this morning, his didn't look well and his lips where a bit white. Not wanting to scare her, I said I'll go take a look at him with her, and that we should go to the hospital regardless just to be safe.

They do live across the street from a gas station, but I can't think of anything that could be "burning" or smell like it's burning coming from a gas station that could cause this.

    Does anyone here know:

    1. Is there a number to call in Bangkok/Thailand if somebody needs help with poisoning, such as Poison Control?
    2. Do you know of any hospitals in Bangkok that would be better suited for something like this, such as one that has poison specialists? We are near Ratchada / Ladprao.
    3. Any ideas on what could have caused this?

  13. Does anyone know where I could start searching for a guitar headphones amplifier so I can play without having arguments with the wife.

    Thanks.

Try the music store in the basement of Fortune Town.

BTW, if you know where I can find a nylon string acoustic for under 3k baht plase let me know.

  14. We went looking for this Pizza shop but could not find it. An established book store near by was as confused as us and didn't know where Soi 26/1 was. We certainly did not find it. Is there more information on it's location or ph #????

    Thanks,

I think he's referring to Bangkok Pizza which is on Soi 24/1. Somebody else in this thread mentioned that they may have closed so you should call them first if you plan on going. I've had their pizza a couple of times, and it's okay, but nothing like NY style pizza. I don't know how anyone could even say that. I like the pizza at Absolute Bar better, and it's closer to NY style than this place. Still want to try NYSP on Thong Lor.

  15. I dont know WHAT it is about Nigerians you see in Bangkok walking around in their mulit-coloured attire, but they are so LOUD and garish, extremely aggresive in their demeour and dont give a <deleted> about anyone else. You usually see them at the Bayok Tower buying cheap priced clothes to export back to Nigeria, or whatever.

They DO have a very bad reputation for being scam-artists etc, but I'm sure there are MANY decent Nigerians about who suffer from the bad press brought about by their fellow countrymen.

I think its part of their culture to be loud and aggressive ?

I was going to post something similar, asking the OP why it seems Nigerians (at least I think they are Nigerian) are so loud with eachother and strangers. When in the internet shops across from Gulliver on Soi 5, a few will frequently come in and shout at the lady working there, shout into the phone when making their long distance calls, shout at eachother, etc. I just ignore it as I assume it's cultural since many middle eastern men doing the same, but it can get annoying when you are trying to work on the computer or have a conversation with someone.

  16. I also know many Thai's who have done this, and I find it disturbing that it seems to be so accepted here.

My current gal has two children and a nephew living with her, who were being raised by an aunt for several years. While the kids do have loving, educated, (divorced) parents, there doesn't seem to be much interest in actually raising the children from either of them.

Pop doesn't help mom with child support (reliably anyway) as he wants her to "fail" at raising them (which obviously means financially fail) and get the kids to live with him. In the meantime, instead of attending a private school which he can afford to send them to, they attend a local public school which they don't like as they previously attended a private school and are well aware of the level of education they are receiving. So to get a hold of the kids he loves so much, he punishes them. In this instance, having the kids is more important than actually raising and providing a quality education for them.

Mom works hard, and has the nephew at home when the kids get back from school and after school sports activities, but she doesn't think spending time with them other than a few hours a week is necessary. Whenever I ask her if she should be home with her boys, she says no need, her 16 year old nephew is there to watch them. I asked her if she wants a 16 year old drinking, smoking, high school dropout "raising" her sons, but she doesn't think it matters as she is there in the morning and perhaps a few hours or a full day on the weekends. Seems to be enough just to make sure there is food on the table and having a "man" around to serve as a male role model ( :o ) and keep them safe.

The sad thing to me is that these children are in a better situation than most in Thailand, but I still find it odd and insufficient being from the west since everything except the actual raising of them is being provided.

I can safely say I would never want to have children with a Thai as I have different ideas on what it takes to raise a child than most Thais do. From my experience, it's extremely hard to get a Thai to understand a differing point of view, and nearly impossible to get them to change their ways with regards to that point of view. As long as this Thai family structure of having others raise their children continues to exist and proliferate, future generations will never feel the need to have more of a role in their own childrens upbringing, for better or for worse.

  17. he probably meant it is $100 over the US price..

price is $299 (plus tax) in USA, THB12k+ in thailand (over 400 USD)

I think that is exactly what he mean't, a bit of wishful thinking out there I think.

I was in MBK 4th floor last week, there was a thai/american visiting with a load of them trying to sell there for 18000 baht.they didt want them ,they needed unlocking, dosent surprise me that they didnt buy ,as all businesses here run on credit and they buy nothing, especially off farang !

You must be talking aboput the iPhone not the iPod Touch - why would the touch need unlocking?

Apple have sent letter to all stockists in Sim Lim in Singapore threatening legal action of they continue to sell unlocked iPhones - they go for over 1000 SGD here - 23,000THB ++

That's odd since they are going to start selling unlocked iphones anyway.
