  1. I bought my last one about two years ago - Samsung i5, 4Gb RAM and 500 Gb Hard Drive and cost in the mid to high 20,000 Baht range. I did research after discussing with my brother, who was the nearest to an expert I had at the time. I have barely looked at any laptops in the past couple of years.

My wife has finally decided to replace her antique desktop of 7 years plus with a laptop. I've done the rounds of the shops and tried Google but it seems that most of them are still using the same specs but much cheaper. I couldn't see anything with more up to date specs, which I'm really surprised about. When I bought mine the general range was i3, i5 and i7. I always thought that specs moved on more quickly than it appears or is there something different about intel's business and marketing?

  2. Most people recommend not studying grammar at the beginner stage, which sounds good to me. I always took that to mean really deep things like the difference between what adverbs and adjectives are and how they differ in English.

I notice that some words have tone markers and others don't - The written markers seem easy enough to remember, but I've been wondering why some use markers and others don't - I don't know if they were both introduced at the same time or what, but it would seem easier to just have a written marker - just wondering.

I'm studying Lesson 3 of 'Teach Yourself Thai' by David Smyth and the end section deals with how to know the tone if there are no markers. He explains and then gives a table to help, which deals with Consonant class, Live/dead and long/short vowel.

Though this is obviously grammar, my initial thought was 'I think I really ought to learn this'; how on earth do people remember this? Is it a case of just meticulously applying the rules and eventually you'll remember it or maybe experience eg, you can tell by the context alongside your spoken word knowledge bank?

  3. Grateful for the help. I'm on board about the breather pipe, though they are the standard 2cm blue pipes sticking up about 6 metres. I wonder if the pipe needs to be wider and perhaps not so high off the ground. If that's not it then my guess is the 'U Bend' under the toilet. The builders are seasoned pros and so I just took it as read that they would do it automatically; presuming that's where the problem lies. The Architect has finally realised he needs to do a site visit and I'll get my wife to tactfully chat to him about it.

  4. My builder has installed 3 of the round concrete septic tanks for each of my bathrooms. There's also a metal disk fitted for access. Inside the bathrooms it smells like a sewer and they have temporarily put a breather pipe, but it still smells. I've tried putting the bio powder but still no difference. My wife was told that there have to be breather pipes, but I haven't had this before in my previous house using the same system and I don't see anyone else using them. I get the feeling that there's something wrong with the installation and also that my builder is waffling to my wife.

  5. I'm due to submit my annual visa extension this coming week; my 90 Day Report is due less than 2 weeks afterwards. I was thinking of doing my 90 Day report whilst I wait for the ladies to check my extension paperwork. In terms of the 'Visa Stamp' photocopy for the 90 Day Report, will I need to wait till I get the 'Under Submission' visa stamp or can I just use the existing visa stamp?

  6. I have a Married Visa Extension and have always lived at the same place since we got married with joint signatures on our rental agreement. I'll be sending a 90 Day Report to show the new address. Do I need to just give the new address or write on the form at the top eg Change of Address and that will do, or do I need to send copies of the blue book for my wife as well as Marriage Certificate?

  7. I would be grateful for polite suggestions please, about this, bearing in mind I know diddly-squat about plumbing.

I was hoping to collect the rainwater for garden use, by way of taps around the garden wall as it's too impractical to lug a hose.

I was told it's possible to combine the collection of rainwater along with government supply for the dry periods, in one tank. I wonder about rainwater overflow and I've been told that even a specifically designed 'Rainwater Collecting Tank' would need a manual diversion system, which is just not on. Also, as the taps are plumbed to a particular tank then I would need government water as a backup.

Is it possible to install a tank that has a rainwater overflow diversion as well as a government water inlet??

  8. I've noticed that the site is often unavailable and much of it (eg Div 1 and 2 Stats) haven't been updated since before 28th July 2012. I tried the 'Contact Us' section, but it continuously fails to transmit any messages and asks us to contact the administrator 'by another means' - I looked for a way and there's no option or contact details given. If they are having problems with the site or manpower, then it would be nice if they could tell us.

  9. I couldn't find a 'Quote' button so I've copied the sentence below from a post by 'Rimmer'.

Appearing as an ‘excuse’ he said that Ministers are not going to give overseas Britons priority over what they see as more pressing needs at home.

I've been led to believe that UK pensioners living in the EU are eligible for the annual inflation rise - surely that counts as overseas! It hasn't been explained to us why UK pensioners in qualifying European countries qualify and the likes of us in Thailand don't.

  10. I'm using a Samsung laptop bought in Thailand with the usual romanised and Thai keyboard. For most things Windows displays English and it's set up for me to change to the Thai keyboard when I need it. However, the pop-up boxes eg for downloads are shown in Thai.

    I went to Control Panel:

    >Clock, Language and Region

    >Change Display Language

    >Administrative

    >Change System Locale.

I changed it from Thai to English(UK) and on restart I tried to download and it just gave jumbled characters; everything else is still in English, as before. I tried other languages with the same result. I'd appreciate any help - please take pity, I'm obviously no expert but I've tried to DIY and now scratching my head. Thanks

  11. Hi Jenny,

I do live in Amphur Muang Lampang, married to a local and been here for over 4 years. Apart from my wife wanting to stay here, It's precisely because there aren't too many foreigners and it's quiet, that I really like it. Chiang Mai is close enough if we need serious shopping. If you don't mind chatting or befriending someone knocking on the door of 50 then please PM me.

  12. Trying to book on-line for my 90 day reporting in May. Seems like I can only do it by using the calendar, if I try to put in a date below a window opens that says I have to use calendar and then everything locks up since after hitting "ok" it keeps reappearing and I have to force quit my safari browser. But the problem is the calendar is only for the current month. How do I book for a date in another future month?

Please remember that the online booking system is for things like annual visa extensions like marriage and retirement, not 90 day reports.

  13. I've just started to teach English to groups of 1 to 5 children. I haven't got a colour printer as I rarely need it and go to my local Print Shop as and when. I don't want to get a laminating machine and thought that perhaps I could use digital flash cards, on say an Ipad or 7 inch tablet, which I have access to.

I'm interested to know of any experiences and especially what software comes in handy - Google Docs (Presentations), perhaps? I say this as I would probably need quick access to cards at various points in the sequence, instead of just 'Backwards and Forwards' arrows.

  14. Many thanks for your help and apologies for replying later than I'd hope.

I live in the north but do venture out about 2 or 3 days a month to Chiang Mai and Bangkok. I have a Samsung Galaxy S2. In terms of budget I just want to reduce from the 650 Baht unlimited at the moment as I don't use it as much as I thought I would. I'm looking to use wifi from my home connection along with any hotspots etc out and about. I'm thinking that I'll be needing a 2/3G connection for about 20 or 30 hours a month based on average usage. Looking at the charts you linked - I guess I could try the 100 Baht(20 hours). I could then perhaps try the 99 Baht (75Mb) afterwards and compare.
