  1. I did my TEFL course there in 2013 and it was a little....... weird........ they have a great reputation from the past, but our instructor was miserable and moody. While I am not a native speaker anyway, an American national who was the shining star of our course for a reason and finished with A+ grades in all fields commented "the level and quality of instruction is shitty", and I would second that.

But maybe they now want to get rid of that instructor and you are the new one ? ;-)

While the location is dull, there is great local food available just accross the road. 25 Baht or 30 Baht for buffet-style Thai food, at least that was how much they charged in 2013. That was probably the nicest thing I could say about my TEFL course there....

  2. Medellin, Colombia... No bout a doubt it...

That for sure would be one of my 3 alternative locations too.

with the other two being Indonesia, same as the OP's choice (but most probably BALI only as the rest of the country is now becoming a Talibanesia quickly and the sale and consumption of alcohol will soon be banned anywhere in the country except Bali).

number 3 would have to be Puebla or Cuernavaca, or even MexDF, which is probably the most underrated City worldwide, though I would love to avoid to experience another 7.5 quake on the 12th floor of a building while staying there, as it happened to me in 2014. frightening....

  3. What about also naming and shaming all the Siam Paragon's Management who are behind the car park management and also the management of the traffic outside its premises. Real group of buffons. Plus I hate the fact that they discrimnate the parking spaces by allowing so called hiso dogs to park on the ground floor and numerous stupid places reserved for various stupid programmes ie serenade, etc etc. Most of these dogs are not the ones spending much monies in the premises and the shop owners should also make it clear to the stupid management.

most of those HISO DOGS (not so probably high-ranking politicians or army members who will certainly get this privilege for free) as you call them actually pay ludicrous amounts of money for their VIP status each year, so this is one of the small "perks" they receive for being a PARAGON VIP MEMBER

  4. I discovered two more websites in Thai that offer a lot of information.

If you prefer DTAC (sadly in my huge housing estate the 3G of DTAC is still mostly hit and miss with switching back to 2G every now and then), you should have a look at:

    http://www.pro-dtac.com

they still have, at least until the end of May 2015, a daily offer of obviously unlimited usage at 384 KB/s, priced at 19 Baht (that is the first offer on this website).

the 7 day offer has obviously expired

then there is http://www.prothaidd.com which offers a lot of Info and sign-up-codes too, covering all three main providers

  5. indeed the problem is that most Condo units can not be rent for just 1 month, but there are several places that actually specialize in short-term rentals.

craigslist could be a place where to search for English language ads, but for some obvious reason it is not popular with Thais. google-ing using the proper terms should produce some useful results too, I just performed such a search and there is a lot of information available.

as for short-rental websites, there is not only airbnb, but as well travelmob, roomorama, flipkey, homeaway and pandabed. Be aware that the fees those portals charge can be high on those websites and always read the fineprint (additional cleaning fees and the likes)

  6. The 15th would give enough time to get the paperwork in order. .

Yes, a tourist visa doesn't require a ticket out and no bank statement needed.

That depends on the location were you obtain your tourist Visa, it is a fact that some embassies and (less so) honorary consulats will only issue a tourist Visa if you can show proof of an onward ticket too.....

  7. toppline584: I sent you a private message.

A German not having eaten Sauerkraut?

Like an Englishman not having eaten fish and chips?

I wouldn't be surprised if more than half of the German population has never eaten Sauerkraut. It indeed is a stereotype that will never die, same as the myth that Bavarian food or pork knuckle is the equivalent of German food. It very much depends where you were born and raised.

If born and raised in the Northern states like Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein or Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, chances are u have never eaten Sauerkraut or Pork knuckle.

If you hail from one of the two Southernmost states Bavaria or Baden-Wuerttemberg, chances are that you are very much used to at least Sauerkraut.

There are a plethora of local and regional dishes in Germany that people from other areas of the country have never heard of, let alone eaten.....

  8. Banning for "life" is a little excessive. The Japanese guy "a long time Bangkok resident" must have pull to get this kind of response. The Thai taxi authorities should call a strike to support their colleagues. A heavy fine and suspension would have been sufficient. If a lifetime ban is called for in any case it should be three strikes you're out not two.

    Agree

First they do nothing for more than 20 years, and now this sort of over-reaction.

But no matter how, no doubt this will serve as a warning signal to many of the crooks sitting in green-yellow, red-blue and purple Sedans around Swampy, waiting for victims rather than for Passengers....

I have given up on this and now, even with heavy luggage, always walk to the drop-off area and past the revolving gates which luckily revolve in both directions ;-)

tired of sobbing cabbies telling me they had to wait 2 hrs to get a fare and now only will earn 250 THB on the way to Bangna.....

  9. Yesterday morning my daughter checked in with AIR ASIA on a flight from Chiang Mai to Hong Kong. Her bag weighed 23Kgs. She was forced to pay an extra THB1,575 and inconvenienced and embarrassed by having to go half way down the airport concourse to pay this fine then return to check-in.

I am an ex-airline pilot who flew both passengers and freight. There is absolutely no justification for this behaviour. I can state categorically that the extra 3 Kgs to be carried would have cost the airline less than THB1 in extra fuel. This procedure, rigidly held to by AIR ASIA, including having their staff specifically trained to look for and implement it, is a rip-off, extortion, and blackmail. The airline knows you have no option but to pay up by the time you are at check-in and uses such excuses solely to gouge more money from passengers. In addition, its web site is constructed so that the unwary find themselves paying for services and extras that they did not want.

I could forgive this underhand practice if the extra charges were moderate and equivalent to those quoted on the web site, but they are not. It is nothing more than extortion worthy of the worst kind of loan shark, backed up by a refusal to let you on board (blackmail) if you don't pay up. Further, the two sweet young things in front of us at check-in both had baggage weighing much less than 10Kg. They were not offered a discount.

As an ex-airline pilot, it will take a great deal to sway me from the belief that the AIR ASIA CRASH of a few weeks ago was as a result of pilot error. For that reason I call into question the selection, training, and safety standards of AIR ASIA's pilots. And don't forget, it was not supposed to be flying that route on that day which exemplifies the airlines disregard for regulations that it cannot be unaware of.

AIR ASIA touts itself as a Low Cost Airline. It is not, not when you consider that the extra THB1,575 would have bought a seat on a reputable airline.

Air Asia is just CHEAP, in every sense of the word and I and my family will never fly with them again.

this is all nonsense Bla-Bla !

everybody knows that ALL Budget Airlines will charge for any GRAMM above the allowance you have paid for. it's even a LOT worse in Europe (the likes of Ryanair, WizzAir and to a certain degree, Easyjet.

But of course it's very easy to blame others for your own ignorance.

I used TIGER on the second day of their operation back in 2004, BKK-SIN, Budget Airlines were still few and far between in Asia, I had 18 KG instead of allowed 15 KG. I was made to pay for the 3 KG, which I did not expect and not like, but I have learnt my lesson and will NEVER EVER have one Gramm more than allowed when flying any budget Airline.

Even several legacy carriers (QATAR comes to my mind, PAL, and even LH is extremely strict too ) nowadays will make you pay for overweight luggage of just 3 KG.

this is year 2015 now and people should have learnt their lessons after so many years of Budget Airlines in operation

  10. You would struggle to buy anything for that price in the centre. You need to go a little further out, say 10-30km of the city, somewhere along the Bangna-trad road for example. Have not seen anything under a million in the city.

The Parkland Bangna - many units available fo9r sale around that price, approx 37 sqm.

Bangna-Trat KM 4.5, near Central Bangna (with a BigC) and Mega (with a BigC Extra and TOPS), plus a huge Tesco Lotus. easy access to Swampy. Just be careful when buying second hand older style Condos as some of the buildings at Parkland are near to bankrupt and may require unexpectedly large future maintenance investments

  11. Here are the ACTUAL TrueMove-H webpage listing the TrueMove-H Terms and Conditions Extra Package promotion (Thai language only, sorry, but you can use Google Translate)

    384kbps Internet Data Promotion

    384 kbps unlimited -- same-day* 14฿ *900*1901#

    384 kbps unlimited -- 7-day* 69฿ *900*1902#

    512kbps Internet Data Promotion

    512 kbps unlimited -- same-day* 09฿ *900*8908#

    512 kbps unlimited -- 7-day* 59฿ *900*8909#

    * Promotion will terminate automatically at 23:59 o'clock on the last day of subscription

Strange their 512 kbps are cheaper than the 384 kbps, what's the catch?

I always use code *900*3339# which gives me 1GB unlimited for 30 days at a full speed (42 mbps) and then throttled down to 128 kbps thereafter. Plus unlimited WiFi and all that for 399 baht.

If the above 512 kbps are truly unlimited (speed and data vise), it might be a better choice if access to True WiFi hotspots is not required. I don't watch streaming video so the full 42 mbps is not necessary but it's really noticeable when I hit my 1 GB limit and the speed drops to 128.

    Gonna try 512 kbps unlimited -- 7-day* 59฿ *900*8909# next time.

the reasons seems that it is actually a promotion, valid until June 30th only

  12. Yep the chinese are taking over much income for thailand.

    not really.

they are taking over much income of a few unscrupulous Thai businessmen only.

the regular Thai population though is just annoyed of the animal-like behaviour of those noisy ignorant hordes with no respect of local custom whistling.gif

  13. I did some more research after Jiu-Jitsu send me a PM with a sign-up-code.

It seems like this is the most up-to-date Info from Truemove available in English, and there are 3 different packages:

    http://www.truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/topping/net_buffet_en.html

then there seemed to be a PROMO which is not listed on the English TRUEMOVE page (see attached screenshot). After the new restrictive AIS rules come into effect on May 1st, I will try to apply for this Promo and then report my experience
