If you think drugs are rife in Thailand, go to Cambodia. You can't walk more than 5 meters in Phnom Penh by the riverside without someone offering you something -and that's on a good day.

Risked his life in the process too by the sounds of it. That is very sad.

Perhaps a clampdown on the pickpockets in government is overdue.
It should be a clampdown in pickpockets who are Khmer, target tourists, that use public transport and have funny markings and English pickpockets that don't use the BTS much also.

Anything else going on in November other than Loy Kratong?

I think they are acting out of self-interest rather than the good of the nation. Rightly or wrongly they just want to get what they want, that's what this is really about.

He's not the first to pull that off, there was a more famous one than that, Netflix made a show about him even. Some Israeli guy if I remember rightly.

Yeah but that's not quite the same. The Thai government is just trying to offer what protection it can to its citizens. That in itself is commendable even if its not perhaps the best way to go about it.
-
But didn't Laos have to sign over land to the Chinese for this to be built and aren't they asking Thailand to do the same?

Gambling is a serious addiction for some Thais. I do hope they figure out a way to only allow those who can afford it to enter. On the other hand, having visited Las Vegas and Macau as a non-gambler, the professional entertainment was good and I understand why even families go.
As most employment in Macau seems to come from the casinos and related businesses (restaurants etc.), I doubt they can afford to end gambling.
I think that is the right way forwards yes. They could do things like show proof of funds, say 5000 baht, before being allowed entry or something like that. Dress code also, try and keep it all above board somehow.

But many thais go off to the border and play in them in Poipet, its been that way for decades. Many thais go to work there too because of it. They might as well give into demand and profit from it.

Yes by the roundabout where many of the older casinos are.
