  1. Asus was always my brand of choice from the early 90's. I have installed many Asus main boards over the years but in the last year I had more and more trouble. Can be incidents but it happened to much on a row and it costs me to much time. Its no fun to deliver two computers to a resort on a small island and within one month two failures. One server with Asus main board loses it's bios setting after a reset. Raid setting wrong. Other new office pc with Asus main board didn't boot the next day, replaced this one and it crashed with some applications or using media player, replaced it with a Gigabyte main board, running as it should now. And I do an extensive burn-in test before delivering. The last main board showed after the 18e completed runs memory suddenly a memory chip failure, next run failure again on a different memory location.

Anything to do with mainboard battery ?

Interesting to see the figures for application times jumping hugely. I last saw.. just a couple fo days ag,o completely different stats. (figures are rough as I forgt them exactly but they are fairly close)

It's bloody ridiculous to take so long. I am an expat in Bangkok waiting to go home with wife. We have to give notice for her job, notice for apartment, notice to get goods shipped home plus were spending all this money just hanging around waiting. Plus my visa is coming to an end.

I feel for the chap who hasn't seen his wife and son for a while. I'm dreading a refusal for my wife too. We've been together everyday for 6 years and it'll be stressful and messy ( financially ) to be separated until we appeal.

I quit my job in order to get all paperwork and details ready thinking the embassy times would be fine for me, now if I have to wait a further 2.5 months that'll really bugger things up.

    Hi Guys

I applied for settlement visa in December 1st and got it on the 17th December. I can not beleive how it has changed this year but I did have not contact the embassy and spoke to Thai people and it was not easy becasue limited English.

The Goverment are probably making cut backs and hiring more Thais to save money in the current climate.

Good Luck every one it does do your head in though

    Paul

Paul et al. I'd be horrified if a Thai (or any other non-diplomat national) be reviewing my wife's application to settle in the UK. For 26,780 Baht I expect a trained official to be doing this and not some locally hired employee.

    Hi Mate

You never know these days we do the same over in the UK save money where you can and screw as much out of us possible.

You would hope not but who knows!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Paul

Sorry for the typos... I've a wireless keyboard and batteries running out and I didn't go back to check.

I'm now concerned about the waiting time as it really throws a spanner in the works. This isn't yet certain of course, but I don't want to be sitting here, twiddling my thumbs for 2 more months waiting for a result.

  4. Thanks 7by7. I've been married and living with my wife over here for 6 years. Hopefully, we've ticked all the boxes and she wont need an interview - just need to be patient. :o

I'm in a similar situation.. been here with wife 6 years and am awaiting visa so I can return home and get on with things. Don't want to wait potentially 3 months to get a refusal and then wait all over again. I'm pretty much just sitting around now waiting for things to be processed but visa is nearing its end which will incur more expense getting out and in again.

One thing that is interesting is that if there are 162 applications a month and they are only processing 69% per month, every month that goes by the queue must increase by 30% and so on. It's all a bit worrying.

  6. looking down the check list.......thanks for the links.......I see that evidence of current financial position in the UK is required........as we'll be staying with my parents to start with, does that mean a letter from my dad plus documents to back it up? Is it right that I will still be the 'sponsor', even though it is my dad that owns the house and has all the money???

    cheers

I am in a similar situation. I have been an expat here for 6 years and quit my job to return to UK. This makes me unemployed until I get home.

I contacted a lawyer in the UK and they stated that you have to sponsor your wife / fiancee / girlfriend. Your parents can not act as sponsors or guarantors. You need to show you have your own money / incom eto support your wife. The fact you live with parents should not matter as this is your point of residence. You need to have letter from parents stating you live / can live there with wife / fiancee etc. You need to show size of house, number of bedrooms / rooms excluding bathrooms and kitchen. You need to show land registry or the fact your parents own the house.

If you have a job, 6 months worth of salary slips and bank account statements. If no job, proof of money in the bank to show you can sustain yourself and wife for a period that enables you to find eployment. You will have to show employment history, qualifications and so on which go towards showing whether you have the chance to get a job.

Your wife's qualifications / employment hostory etc necessary. Need to show proof of relationship via photos, chat transcripts, phone records etc etc. You'll need reference letters and so on... and so on...

I have known my wife for 6+ years and we've got good references, qualifications, job history and so on but we're still waiting for the visa to come back and it's not certain we'll get it. Just get everything together, check everything and submit along with the TB result, check made payable to British Embassy, Bangkok and keep fingers crossed.

I hired a solicitor in UK. Cost around 1,000 pounds all in. They supplied good cover letter and assisted well. PM me if you want more info but I'm no expert. Just been throughit all recently so memory is fresh.

  7. My steak was a 300g, 300 Baht Prime Steak. It was tender but not as I wanted cooked and it sure wasn't a steak that I had ever had before.... not sure what it was, or what cut it was, but certainly not a sirloin, rump, filet etc... waaay to "stringy"for that.

Had gravy poured over it (not by request) and had to battle with the numerous flies that kept buzzing my meal.

It might be a good farm for the kids, but it's not a place to go for a steak.

  8. I went to Kao Yai over the weekend... Kao Yai National Park is another rip off for tourists charging 400 Baht for an adult tourist whereas a car full of 8 Thai Adults came to 218 Baht ( large 4 x 4 before you ask ).

On the way to Kao Yai my Thai hosts were all excited about eating at Chok Chai Steak House and were talking about how good it was. I'd also heard this many times and we also looking forward to a good steak.

On arrival, there were a bunch of waitresses wearing cowboy hats and trying to look like ranchers and we were seated in a largish restaurant area with plastic trees, plastic plants. The tables had bottles of tomato ketchup and chili ketchup.

The menus arrived and the steak list was fairly limited although there were t-bone steaks, rump steak and filet mignons, but the other steaks were "prime"steaks.

We all ordered steaks with the exception of my wife who opted for the sausage selection.

I had a 300g prime steak (not imported). All the steaks arrived on a sizzled hot plate and my steak came with frickin' gravy poured over it. I don't know what kind of steak it was, but it wasn't a normal steak. It was very tender but stringy and not at all like a sirloin etc.

I then watched as EVERY Thai in the place dumped half a bottle of ketchup on their steaks.

The steaks weren't really steaks. They were more sizzling chunks of beef served with 5 french fried, boiled cabbage, carrott cubes, beans and some other white veggie ( as served in every Thai restaurant ).

No idea why Chok Chai is so popular as it is very, very average and I've had much better steaks elsewhere and not just Western steak houses. Nang Nual in Pattaya serves a good steak for example.

So, why do the Thais flock there ? On the way back to Bangkok, there were literally thousands of people swarming around the grounds of Chok Chai..all lining up for ice-cream and a chance to have a 'steak".

To cut a story short, if going to Kao Yai, don't go to Chok Chai expecting a good steak. It doesn't exist. Go there purely to grab a bite to eat and keep your expectations low.

  9. Hey Tango....SpoonZie.......thank you VERY much. I'll go do my "homework" based on your instruction and then I'll let ya' know once I've made progress.

(Oh......and SpoonZie....I'm not sure about this water cooling concept. I just poured a glass of water on my iMac and it doesn't seem to have improved the performance at all. In fact, now it's making weird noises. Just kidding!!!!)

    CHEERS!

    D

SpooZie and I seem to be pointing in the same direction although he knows more about the cooling and mainboards. It's worth noting that overclocking voids warranties so up to you. the Intel 8600 I mentioned is 3.3 Gig out the box with full warranty. To over clock to eek out an extra 0.3 Gig of performance and void the warranty isn't to everyone's liking.

I cetainly agree that the FIRST application to install is the anti-virus / Spyware / Firewall suite.

When you have your machine built, it'll seem like it's amazingly fast, but expect performance drop off as you use the machine more and more. Just keep it in good condition and you should have a PC good for 3 - 5 years ( depending on how applications are developed of course )

Good luck and keep us posted.

  10. This is an old rumour but with the amount of deaths each year caused by drunk driving over this period maybe it wouldn't be a bad thing. A lot of Thais aren't able to self moderate when it comes to drinking and driving.

However I am sure that if they ban sales it will be got in advance.

Sure, everyone will stock up. If it does go ahead though, many visitors will not know about the ban.

It'll be a shame if it does happen. Not the end of the world but maybe a reason to increase the number of times alcohol gets banned ?

I'm not sure if it still happens, or whether it was a one off, but don't they now ban the sale of alcohol for "he who can't be named's" son?

  11. Just heard on Channel 3 news that they are considering not allowing the sale of alcohol over the Songkran period... that'll make people happy. One of the few long holiday periods in the year and they want to stop alcohol sales.. great....just great !

  12. Can someone advise of the hospital system in Bangkok and where I could go to get a root canal? Im looking for the best price - dont want to go to one of the expensive private clinics.

I went to Mission Adventist Hospital Mission Hospital and found it to be very good. The root canal specialist was very good and there was no pain at all. The trouble is, you pay per visit and so make sure you get a quote for the whole thing. I am happy with the result and the price was very fair.

Try to get a root canal specialist by the name of Oranuch (or similar) as she was excellent.

Also, Mission has all the equipment necessary. I was told that many places don't have all the necessary stuff so by going to Mission, you'll save money by not going to BNH or Bumrungrad etc and you'll be sure that everything is there to get the job done correctly.

  13. Personally, I'd buy a couple of PC magazines and read their reviews on the top machines and see what they are offering and check out their specs.

Then determine what you want to use your computer for and build it around that. A good shop should start by asking what you are using your machine for and then advise based upon that.

Why not look at a top spec Dell ? You have the support then. A custom machine will be difficult to get support for.

If you are not a heavy computer user, save some money ( I know you don't need to but.. )by not getting the latest and greatest and even though Quad core CPUs are good, there is not much software out there that takes full advantage of the quad cores.

If I were going to build my own, I'd go for something like this:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 at 3.3 Ghz ( very fast indeed )

    Asus P5K Mainboard

4 Gig of RAM - DDR3 by Geil ( if running a 32 bit OS, it'll only read 3.2 Gig. For more RAM, you'll need the 64 bit version )

I would not go for a single 1 TB hard drive. If it fails, you've lost everything on one drive.... I'd go for 500 Gig x 2 in a mirror RAID, so that if one fails, the other takes over and you've lost nothing. You could get 2 x 1TB if you wish, but two hard drives are better than one unless you wish to backup via another means. The mirroring provides redundancy and automatic backups. Depends what you want... safety or speed. I go for a bit of both.

For a graphics card, go cheap and chearful unless you want to play games or add that second monitor - go for 2 x 24" a 40" seems HUGE unless you are a CAD user and even then...

If you are a gamer, then go for the Sapphire ATI Radeon HD4870 as it's a very fast card and runs 512Mb of DDR5 RAM. It's not the fastest, but unless you are a hard core gamer looking for the best frame rates for the latest games, this card is a top card. It's cheaper than the 9800GTX and is faster...can handle two monitors as well. If you want to push the boat out, look at the same brand but it's the HD 4870 x2 with 2 Gb of DDR5 RAM.... that's like having 2 HD4870 cards but with quadruple the RAM..... needs a high resolution monitor to get the best out if it.

Get a solid case and try to get 650Watts of power this will better run the cooling system... the motherboard should have a good heat dispenser but extra fans will be needed ( ask for quiet fans or you'll end up with a noisy machine ).

The rest is up to your preferences... sound card, DVD / Blue Ray etc...

I personally feel that by throwing lots of money at a machine doesn't get you the best performance. It gets you the latest technology but software isn't ready for it yet.

Getting really nice monitors...like a 24" LG or other top quality monitor. I'd also get a UPS unit to protect your computer against electrical spikes and sudden powercuts and then I'd buy an external hard drive for backing up my data. For 15k you can get a nice backup unit by Buffalo Tech.

Finally, Computer crashes can be because of any number of reasons. Poorly matched RAM, poor software, spyware / viruses and poor hard drives; either bad sectors or a very heavily fragmented drive.

You might need to know how to look after your computer to get the best out of it. A new computer will give you the clout you need, but if you don't treat it properly, it will crash.

Make sure you get a very good anti-virus / Internet security suite like Kaspersky 2009 or ZoneAlarm. Even Norton's latest offering is good.

Get a good Anti-Spyware, Malware programme ( Spyware Doctor, AdAware are fine when coupled with your Internet Security Suite ).

Defragment your system regularly, empty your Temp folder regularly, delete temporary Internet Files and only install programmes you know you need. Don't swamp your machine with programmes you just want to test. If you do, remove them when you don't need them and then use a programme such as Registry Mechanic to get rid of unnecessary registry keys.

As you can see, there's a lot more to keeping your computer running fast and smoothly than just buying a new and more powerful one.

Just for your info, I was going down the road I've mentioned above but I didn't want to throw 50+ k at a new machine in one go, so I ended up paying 45k in installments for a Quad core, 4 Gig RAM HP with a 24" monitor. I'm a heavy computer user, build websites and have multiple windows open all the time (Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver, IE Browser, Chrome and Safari as well as an FTP programme, Skype and Outlook) It does exactly what I want and the speed is great and we all know HP don't provide the best components.

    Hope this helps.

    You go, Tango! :-)

Thank you very much......your post here informs, coaches, and helps.....a lot!

Maybe you and everyone else who has contributed here so kindly will allow me to drill down to the essence of what I need this new system for. One word. Porn! (just kidding....really)

There is one software app......it's 32-bit, not hyperthreaded, and the developers assure me that no such whiz bang upgrades are coming to it. There is also no alternative that is suitable for me....and it won't run on my much beloved iMac. Its CPU / RAM appetite is dependent on the individual user.....and in my particular case, I need every bit of power it (the software) can offer. It is also extremely important to be able to render dozens of highly detailed charts, graphs, etc. I'm not a gamer, so I don't know how that compares to what someone who needs a "mega gaming" graphics card might prefer.....but in this case, how about we err on the side of spending too much on the graphics card.......so just tell me the "best of the best" (that I can buy locally in Bangkok....preferably at Pantip).

If we here on this thread can agree to stipulate that these are the facts and that there are no workarounds available.....and also that while I am by no means "rich".....in this instance I absolutely need the hardware system (desktop) that will maximize.....with zero compromises (none at all.....cost be damned.....really.....performance only)......this software app's potential. That said, as Tango and others have pointed out, the "newest" and often even the "most expensive" hardware components do not always offer the best performance. Much of this is, as Tango said, dependent on what app is being run on them. My software app is 32-bit, and aside from that app I will run a Firefox browser (assume 20+ tabs all the time) simultaneously....ahhh...and an anti virus app.........so three apps total (the "mega app", Firefox, antivirus).

Based on these specifics....and for the sake of not bugging you guys too much with follow ups from me......and assuming all parts must be available at Pantip (Bangkok)......

Which CPU, graphics card, motherboard, and how much RAM do you suggest?

I'd love to be able to go to Pantip this weekend....so any thoughts you have before that.....fire away!!

    CHEERS!

    D

Hmmm.... I think.. and I'm happy to stand corrected here, that the 32 bit app, unless old, will run on a 64 bit OS ( any way you can check that? ) if it can, I suggest you make sure your OS is a 64 bit version and then bump up the RAM. The amount if RAM depends on the mainboard and what it can tak, but 8 Gig will suffice but when adding RAM, try to add the RAM in 2 Gig pairs, so that you can hopefully increase it later if necessary. So, rather than having 8 RAM slots and filling each slot with 1 Gig of RAM, fill 4 with 2 Gig RAM. Again, the Mainboard is the issue here.

DDR3 is faster RAM but more expensive. 8 Gig of DDR2 should be fine unless you can stretch the budget, but check the difference in price. It's bound to be a lot more.

As for the Graphics card, you might want to look at a professional graphics card and not a gaming card. seeProfessional Cardsand read through what you think will suit your needs. It might be that the gamers cards are not as good as these pro-cards but you don't clearly say what the app is you're using.

I'd still opt for the Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 at 3.3 Ghz as all write ups list it as being "blisteringly fast".

As for the board, ask a specialist dealer such as the one mentioned by the other posters. Tell them what I and others have mentioned and expect to pay around 7 - 10,000 baht for a good mainboard, naybe up to 14-15,000 for a top notch one. You could even get a main board that allows for two CPUs ? ( Dual Sockets ). You could start off with one CPU and whack in another if you need to.

I'm sorry I can't give exact board types because you can go for home use / gamers mainboards or workstation mainboards.

I think you should state the CPU, the type and amount of RAM, plus the graphics card you want and then get the seller to find you the right board for that mix. But focus on how you will use it rather than the latest and greatest and don't let the vendors tell you otherwise...they're in it for the money !!!

    Cheers

  14. I have been having problems for about a month now.  True has been out to "fix" it three times, but not much has changed.  It is usually fine in the morning and on days during the week, but during the evenings and weekends, it gets awfully hard to watch.

Now True says it is my condo's fault.

It's anyone's fault but True's.... When I was having real problems connecting to a website that I really needed access to, they blamed my router, my firewall..everything until they started giving me proxy addresses to try. The proxies worked but I told them I didn't want to have to add a proxy address each time I accessed a simple website. They tried to pull the wool over my eyes but they shut up when I told then I'm in IT professionally.

Guess what happened a little time later? .... they actually called me up to ask if I could help fix their problem. Jeez !

By the way, no sparrows have laid claim to having farted and so it's the sun's fault, but it sure as heck isn't True's.... right!?

  15. Hey there.....I visited "Ms. Judy" today at Jedicool in Pantip. DOTCOM, thank you again for the referral. She's very nice and either had answers or asked her sister for answers....such that I left with no additional questions. Well....none for them. I do have a few follow ups for.......YOU GUYS!! LOL!!

Here's what I have in terms of very preliminary specs. If you have a second to review 'em....please do so from the perspective of....."money is no issue, building the best dam_n system is!!" Please.......oh pleeeeeeeeease, don't let the specs below stop you from correcting any errors or omissions you think I've made, k? I'll post the specs below....and you'll notice that it is comprised of off the shelf parts. I've seen some incredible claims by a few day trading computer specialists in regards to their "overclocked" systems......which of course are not exactly "off the shelf" components.....but up to now I haven't considered going that route. Should I (obvious concerns with stability, tech support, etc.)? You'll see below that one of my questions is whether I should go for two 24" monitors or one 40" Hi-Def monitor.

Preliminary specs (preliminary meaning, specifically.....please correct / change anything or everything if you believe I can extract even one iota of additional, even incremental, performance):

    CPU = Intel i7 940 quad core 8M Cache, 2.93 GHz, 4.80 GT/s Intel® QPI

    Motherboard = Gigabyte EX58 Extreme

Hard Drive = 1TB buffer 32MB Western Digital

RAM = Geil 6 gig / 1333 (note: I can go 12 gig instead. If money is not an issue.....should I go for 12 gig? Meaning, will it enhance performance of the 32 bit, non hyperthreaded trading software app?)

VGA Card = Nvidia XFX 9600 GSO (note: I was told that this will handle....right out of the box.....two 24" monitors or one 40" monitor. Which would you recommend....Two 24's or one 40?)

Optical Drive = DVD_RW Asus brand

Power Supply = Gigabyte 550 GT silent

    Case = Thermaltake Armor

Additional CPU Cooler = ThermalRight IFX 14 + 2 fans

    OK....fire away!

  16. I'll be "Mr. Negative"on this one...

Does she really have a bank job and has she really got a promotion or was she really just trying to get the gold and then call it off ?

I am certainly no expert but if it were me and the gold had been given as a pre-wedding gift like an engagement ring, then she should give it back or at least ask for it back, but if it was just a gift throughout your relationship together, then I'm with the others who say that you should let her keep it.

  17. I have a multi-function machine from Canon. It's an MP780 and was a very good machine until the black ink stopped printing. Colour worked, scanner, fax et al all worked but just the black.

The machine cost me roughly 8,000 Baht about 3 - 4 years ago and it's had very light usage and been treated with much love and effection and so to get it back to perfect health I took it to Canon HQ at Bangkok City Tower and left it with them.

The next day I received a call telling me the repair... just for making the black ink work...... would be 17,000 Baht !!

The latest, top model, home / small office multi-function costs half that !! When I pointed this out, I was told I could buy the new one at special price because my old one was broken.

Is this some kind of lame method of making people buy Canon products ? - Buy a Canon and if it breaks out of warranty, pay double the initial cost to repair it or buy a new one cheap.

I am now the proud owner of a new HP OfficeJet J6480 All-IN-One and it's lovely. Smaller than the Canon and works a treat.

  18. I'm heading back to UK shortly and would like to know about whether a land line phone bought here in Thailand will work at home in UK.

I have found a really good Panasonic wireless hand set running on 2.4 Ghz range which seems OK for UK but I'm concerned about the wiring and whether it will work over there. I have a base unit and a second unit but wish to buy a third so I cover my house but don't want to throw money at it if it won't work.

    Any info appreciated.

    Regards

  19. Agree with early adoption warnings, and also that products bought in Thailand are best returned to distributer for redress.

Mostly all I want to point out, is that there is a spell check here, included in the web page. It isn't difficult, and nor is re-reading your post before pressing the add reply button. There are many talented people reading these forums who have helped me in the past, and I too am happy to put back in what has been freely given. If the post is hard to read, and unintelligible, then its hard to help.

Being dyslexic is understandable, and of course allowances are made. Laziness, well thats not.

And posting pissed wont win too many friends either. Not unless its very funny.

How about abbreviations ? Do they count as being lazy ?

    thats = that's

    its = it's

    wont = won't

    Neither....nor (not just nor)

    Simple stuff really....

  20. use a different speed test link..try several. If you use their recommended site, it is almost a direct link to their servers and you'll get great speeds.|

Don't forget, the speeds you pay for are only stating the maximum speeds you can expect to get. They are not stipulating the minimum speeds you can expect.

Call True again and ask what speed they can guarantee as an absolute minimum. I bet they don;t give you one. If they do, please post back.

In the UK, you should be told not only the expected maximum speed but a guaranteed minimum ( if you ask I guess )
