  1. Thai soldier arrested after gang attack on 3 British tourists

    2007-07-19 11:26:29 -

Police arrested a Thai soldier for participating in an attack by 30 men on three British tourists as they ate at a food stall north of the Thai capital, police said Thursday.

Thomas Donald Patrick suffered a cracked skull after he and two friends were attacked in Nakorn Sawan province, about

210 kilometers (130 miles) north of Bangkok, said police Col. Pranom Manmuang.

A group of about 30 Thai men, including a soldier, began kicking and punching the three Britons as they dined at a roadside food stall Sunday morning, Pranom said.

Patrick and two other men _ William Paul Stone and Francis Benjamin Peter _ were taken to a hospital. But the same group of attackers stormed the hospital room and continued to beat them until police arrived, Pranom said.

Pranom said Patrick's condition was stable, adding the two other Britons were slightly injured.

Responding to questions about the attack, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said the incident must be thoroughly investigated by police and the army.

«I believe it will not affect the image of the Thai army as it was more of an isolated incident that involved individuals. The Thai army does not encourage their men to act like hooligans,» Surayud said.

On Thursday, police arrested and charged Sgt. Chinaphong Prakobketkorn and another Thai man, Nattapan Jirapong, with assault. The suspects face a maximum seven years in jail if found guilty.

Police were searching for other suspects.

I can understand fights and how they start, but the group storming into a hospital AFTER the beating and start beating again is something beyond anyone's civilized imagination............? :o

    LaoPo

Good point. Thugs brawling in a bar is one thing but to enter a hospital and attack someone while nurses are present is disgusting. :D

  2. Thanks for the reply.

    i'm a total novice.

    have no idea whatsoever.

it would be very nice to make some money out of it but if we didn't, we'd still have a place to sit and fish for our dinner.

any advice is more than welcome.

  3. Anyone know if such a thing as gecko poison exists and if so where it can be purchased?

I went to Tesco the other day and was looking around; i found ant poison, cockroach poison and rat poison but couldn't find any kind of gecko poison anywhere?

Or if anyone has an home brewed solutions please share.

Now i know what internet forums were invented for.

    :o

  4. look around at some of the old topics and you will find lots of info about fish farming....if you want to discuss something then start a topic to discuss what aspect of fish farming you want to discuss.

To answer your question: yes, several members have tried fish farming with various degrees of success.

friendly bunch on here aren't they.

    :o

It is really just as a small scale pet project.

  6. I work on :

sound engineering, data bases, web mastering and design (photoshop, illustrator etc...) and gems... workaholic ? :o

    What type of sound engineer?

    I'm a consultant of sorts.

    i also gamble locally.

    run books and stuff.

it pays far better than the consultancy work.

  7. Stories on this forum seem to follow the same format:

Initial story followed by shock, horror, indignation, criticism, flaming, etc

A couple more posts report further facts, more analysis, more horror, goofy lighthearted followed by key expert

Facts then distorted further and more flaming of individual's lack of educational abilities.

MODs step in with threats and heavenly advice.

    Same old, same old

Shame, as I used to enjoy the articles on this forum.

Love Thailand, now indifferent to Thaivisa.

    excellent analysis.

I really don't know why I bother to open these scaremongering threads.

  8. ...more stringent regulations are being introduced...

This is another case where everybody is being burdened with a more complicated, more time-consuming and costlier procedure because of the irregular activities of a few. Understandable, but sad.

    Maestro

I agree with Maestro. These regulations seem burdensome in the extreme but are caused by a few bad apples who seek to exploit Thailand's Visa system.

  9. Malaysia's MM2M programme has been a relative failure among westerners so far principally because Malaysia simply hasn't promoted it adequately in western countries. If they had spent half the money promoting this that they spent on promoting Langkawi, their figures would have been much better.

Sadly, many, dismiss Malaysia as a "rag head" country. I've found the Malays to be a tolerant race and proud of their countries former relationship with Britain.

  10. Do farangs make a difference as far as the cost of living in a given area? My wife and I live in Loei and could get by very nicely on about 15,000 baht per month. A couple of months ago good friends of ours moved from Jomtien to Phan which is located between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. They recently got their new house built so we went up there for the house warming and a little holiday. I was surprised to see that things there were quite a bit more expensive. Land is REALLY expensive. I didn't pay a lot of attention to the food prices but my wife sure took notice. I only noticed cigarette and beer prices. :D

The exceptions were the local fruit which was quite cheap and the local moonshine was 25 baht for a big beer bottle full. I DO mean moonshine. It seems like every neighborhood there has a still. Every day the locals came by to collect our empty beer bottles. Ed and I supplied them with a LOT of empty bottles while I was there. :o I asked Ed's wife why they wanted those bottles. She grinned and told me they use them for the Thai whiskey. Maybe the locals are more law abiding here in Loei because I seldom see moonshine. The locals here drink Lao Kao.

Lao Kao is Moonshine. You get the taxed, watered down version in the shops, and the 'real' thing from back-yard destilleries. Can't avoid it on any village parties, it tastes awful.

Yes, rural life is cheap, but one has too make compromises. I wouldn't say it's 100 years back in time, but it is a different world, one has to go 'native' to some extent, which can be fun - at least it still is for me, fairly new here. I wouldn't have done this on my own, a local partner and family to share one's life qwith is essential, family best kept at arm's length.

Anyone had bad experiences with family members borrowing money?

  11. Only sign up if you are definitely coming to the Party.

People who are UNSURE if they will be able to attend SHOULD NOT put their names down for obvious reasons.

    Thank you.

The obvious reason for putting my name down, though I am not 100% certain, is that those who don't announce their arrival in this thread won't have a nametag made and not admitted, as stated by the organiser earlier.

It would be a bit of a waste of time and petrol driving all the way to CM, don't you think? :D

So, can I have my nametack, please, Mr. Moderator, even though you deleted my post?

i will try to be there.... :D

If you don't know if you are coming, neither do we.

The sign ups are for people who are doing exactly that, signing up.

If you *are* sure you are coming, you are most welcome. If you cannot attend or you are not sure, please refrain from posting.

    Thanks :o

    Seems pretty obvious to me!

Ok, I am definetely coming! :D

Can I have my nametag now, please? :D
