  1. I heard this (profit as opposed to paid-up capital or anything else) a while back relating to the issuing of work permits. My company has around 80 Thai staff and three non-Thai staff on WPs. We've just invested a huge some of money in several new projects so are not going to show a profit in the next set of financial accounts. I hope some common sense will be shown and this taken into account - if what the OP is saying is in any way going to be enforced.

I'm in similar position. I've made a major investment but its early days and the books may not show a profit for the first year or two.

  2. Stay away would be my best advice - def don't want to be around when the friend is nicked.

Offer them help once and if they take it good and if they turn it down leave them to their own destruction. Your conscience is clear. As Brit said you don't want to be around when the police arrive :o

  3. Have you considered a career in politics ?

A 3 day stay, might qualify you for a leading position in any of the major parties ,Labour,Conservative or Liberal

They are all looking for "new blood" .

The new Foreign Secretary looks about 12. Experience is the key in politics.
  4. I've a mate who runs an agricultural operation over there for simple economic reasons vs. Thailand and he is doing quite well.
I've got in on the ground floor on a new agricultural venture in Thailand. I've invested a lot but the ease at which I am able to conduct business here is good sign for the future of the venture.
  5. a thai friend of mine seems to have developed a cocaine addiction. i don't know how that is possible in thailand but i guess he has a supply from somewhere. i don't want to get too involved but i was wondering if there is any thai rehab program available for this sort of thing?

monkey house if he gets caught :o

Yes be careful if you are with him

I had a cousin who was busted on drug problems. As part of a plea bargain package, they asked him to name anybody for anything and if they could build a rap on whoever he snitched, they promised reduced sentence. The A hole tried to get my dad busted for weekend football bets and pool table betting.

Don't trust anybody on drugs. That includes family members, friends, anybody.

That's true the goodness of the people (if they every had any) is taken over by the drugs. I really pity addicts but more so their friends and families. A good friend of mine took the dope and got hooked and almost lost it all but then found God. Religion can help some. I wouldn't want to force my beliefs on anyone but having belief seems to help many. Good luck.
  6. You can enter using a visa - you only have to not use visa exempt entry more than 90 days in a six month period.
So could you obtain a tourist visa in the UK come to Thialand and enter with a "visa on arrival" do three border runs and then reenter Thailand using your tourist visa? You guys do an amazing job keeping up with all this :o Just thinking about it gives me a headache. :D
  7. Also, the simple fact that the teacher lied about his academic record doesn't necessarily mean he's a criminal. Vice versa - a graduate such as John Mark Carr might be a criminal or insane.

I know. Thank you again for your advice Peaceblondie. Just because a man doesn't send his children to elite private schools it doesn't mean he doesn't care. Or have the right to worry about his child's welfare. After all a school is the legal guardian of a child while they are in attendance and on the premises. :o

  8. Bruceboy, the information you have given is wrong. And why caution RedDevil not to “fall short of the law”? Nothing in his post indicates that he has any intention to do so.

RedDevil, you cannot get an extension of stay at a Thai consulate. Therefore, if you get a non-immigrant visa category O, you will need the multiple-entry visa. This will be valid for an unlimited number of entries into Thailand within one year and on each entry you will receive permission to stay for 90 days.

Another possibility is a tourist visa valid for two entries. This will be valid for two entries into Thailand within 6 months and on each entry you will receive permission to stay for 60 days. This will leave you a couple of days short of 4 months, but before the expiration of your second 60-day permission to stay you can apply at any Immigration office in Thailand for a 30-day extension of your permission to stay at a cost of 1,900 Baht.

    Maestro

Sorry RD and Maestro. I didn't concieve of my post as caution I was merely trying to remind everyone that getting the right visa for your needs before you leave your home country is very important now. I wouldn't like anyone to get trapped into cycle of visa runs and then be not allowed to enter the country for a certian number of days. Esspecially if someone is visiting family.
  9. aussiestyle, I hope we're not being too harsh on bruceboy here; he is trying to do what he understands is best, as a concerned parent. I'm not condoning any lawbreaking; it's immoral to lie about having credentials you don't have for an important job like teaching.

Sorry for the way we said it, bruceboy. You have legitimate concerns.

Thanks PeaceBlondie. A parent worrying about whether their child's teacher has had even a simple police background check is a legitimate concern. I honestly can't understand the hostility this thread has brought. Why is a parent wanting to know if teachers at their child's school have criminal records or fake degrees in anyway controversial? This is Thailand indeed...

    :o

  10. Have they done backround checks? I wouldn't like my kids to be in the care of someone with fake/no documents, and has lied to get the job.

Exactly. Thanks for the support. I initially posted this thread in the teacher's sub-forum and while some posters were very helpful others were hostile and abusive.

  11. Thaksin's children to be demanded to pay income tax at 37 per cent rate

The Revenue Department will demand two children of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to pay personal income tax for proceeds from the sale of Shin Corp shares to Temasek, the department chief said Tuesday.

"I yesterday [Monday] ordered tax officials to proceed legal procedure to collect personal income taxes from Panthongtae and Pinthongta, and the tax amount would be about 37 per cent of income from shares transaction of 329.2 million shares," Sirote Swasdipanich, director general of the Revenue Department told reporters Tuesday.

He said he had informed Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister M R Pridiyathorn Devakula about the plan to demand the two to pay the taxes.

According to the tax law and regulation, Panthongtae and Pinthongta son and daughter of Thaksin has to pay personal income tax by 30 September, a half year tax payment for income rather than salary earning. But they did not file tax payment so the department has to proceed legal action by inviting them to report to officials.

    Thanks for the info.
  12. I am 62 years old and my wife is 61 and we both hold British passports.

Our intention is to visit Ko Samui in December for a period of 4 months but

we are finding the regulations re. visas a little confusing.

Am I correct in assuming that we need a 3 month validity, single entry

non-immigrant visa? If so am I also correct in assuming that because we are

both retired we can get a 1 month extension to this visa?

And if I am correct again can I get this extension in the UK before we leave?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need a double tourist visa, valid for 2x 2 months.

Better get it right before you leave, no reason to fall short of the law if you have honest motives.

  13. A teacher at my daughters rural school has been caught with fake qualifications. He has been given two weeks to leave the country. However I am worried that other teachers at the school are working illegally and have not been though any of the checks now demanded by the Thai government. What can a concerned step father do to ensure no more criminal teachers find work at my daughters school? I have met with the Kru Yai to discuss this issue beofre but she seemed not to understand the laws and regulations that apply to foreign teachers.

  14. I'm a former janitor's helper, fast food cooker, dishwasher-waiter (at age 49!), etc. I also have a BA, a TEFL cert, and have had professional qualifications in two other fields. You do not know who this guy is, and unless you've seen him teach, and know how to judge his teaching, you don't know what kind of a teacher he is. bruceboy, I'm a father of six, and don't know where you're coming from, unless your mind is filthier than mine is.

I am not on a crusade against any one individual. I just wish to know if my step daughter is being taught by someone who is commiting fraud against the Royal Thai Government. If a person is lying to the school and their colleagues and commiting fraud they have no place in education.

  15. Astonishing to read the replies above either accepting the fake degree position with a 'mai pen rai, TIT' attitude, or even going so far as to say 'if the classes were ok, then theres nothing wrong.' Unbelievable.

If you dicovered that your financial advisor/Doctor was working with false credentials would the reaction and reasoning be the same?

Children, and my daughter in particular (obviously!) are our future, like the cliche says. As they spend more time in school than with their parents, then we are entrusting the better part of their education to those teachers. We are basically entrusting their future lives to those same teachers to some degree. I know that i will only entrust the education of my daughter to truly qualified and gifted teachers. Indeed, she goes to a cheaper school here in Bangkok because after grilling the teachers, and observing classes from the exterior of the classroom i found the standard of teaching to be much greater than the very beautiful (facility wise) and better equipped school that is 100m from our home.

Bottom line here is that our kids are special, and i want only special (read qualified in educational practices, enthusiastic, honest and caring) people to be around me daughter. Im sure other parents feel the same.

So, for those guys posting above (maybe the fake qualification topic hit a nerve??) i think that might outline the OP's feelings somewhat for you.

For other parents concerned, i suggest you do the same as i and subtly grill your kids teachers. They are freely available whenever you need to meet them, and getting into personal conversation after/while discussing your kids latest homework can reveal much.

Thanks for the support. I, by chance, bumped into one of the young teachers at the school. He was polite and obviously reasonably educated; he mentioned in passing his time at university. I mentioned the fate of his former colleague and he said one of the other teachers was an obvious fraudster; 58 and a retired lorry driver . In the UK only around 5% of his (and my) generation went to university so to claim to have attained a degree and pursued career as a bloody trucker is obsurd! I intend to persue this matter. All the Dads out there will understand where I am coming from.
