  1. If you have kids born outside of Thailand (in US), and mother and/or father is Thai citizen, the consulate or Thai embassy is quite fast and efficient at preparing a Thai birth cert for the kids. The birth cert is written in Thai and there is a section which says "nationality" and in the case of our kids, it says "Thai". Since they were born in US, obviously they are American also. With the Thai birth cert, the kids can apply for Thai passport. Not sure if that relates to anything with you, as your post is a bit vague.

I'm not 100 percent sure of this, but years ago (15 yrs) it was possible for adults to have dual citizenship (Thai/US). But somewhere along the line it became illegal. And I know of this from two experiences: (1) I asked the immigration officer in LA upon return from Thailand (2 yrs ago) and he said absolutely not legal, and (2) Thai consulate in LA told us if a thai national becomes a US citizen, that the person must turn in all their thai forms of ID

I was doing some checking on all this because I wanted to avoid getting the wife visa's everytime we wanted to come to Thailand to visit for over 60 days or longer.

Sorry, nothing in stone here, but I don't think it's possible. If you find out anything different, please let me know.

  2. yeah, for village use, you don't want to go bigger than a phantom or boss. Myself, I could never bring myself to get on a Wave, etc., or any motorbike. The smallest "errand" bike I used for years was the Phantom. Personally, I like the 2nd generation model (the one before the current model). Better styling, more rakish, etc., and beefier than the boss. You might consider a used one of these in your search.

When you refer to the 2nd generation model, do you mean the 2006 model year? I did a little checking, I was told that the new model year 2007, there is only one style/color to choose, and that's black with the "fire flame" decal on the gas tank? I can't get a straight answer from any dealer/blokes. They just want me to "buy" without even sitting on the bike or asking any questions. Same with the Kawa dealers. "Oh, I will order you one from bangkok". No thanks, I want to test ride it first...

Anyway, I haven't made up my mind yet. I may end up keeping my 3 yr old Kawa. I haven't seen a new model Kawa yet on the streets or showroom anywhere. Have you?

    Thanks.

  3. Hi,

MY wife and I (and one yr old sun) are going to Thailand August 6-20. This is a one time chance for us and we want to make it a memorable one. here are some questions:

    1. Weather, seems to be questionable, Ko Samui is suppose to be better than Phuket, but seems like phuket has nicer views and more exciting things to do, is phuket ever nice in august, or is ko samui the way to go?

    2. We're planning on starting off in Chiang Mai and then heading to the beaches for the final 9 days. Is Chiang Mai and the north worth our time if we want views, elephants, shows and nature etc.. or is it smarter to just stay in the south our entire trip?

    3. Because weather is unpredictable, would it make any sense to fly into Bangkok and decide upon arrival where to go depending on weather (if phuket is nice, there otherwise ko samui)? or is it crazy? would I still be able to get hotels at decent rate last minute?

    4. My plan is to be in chiang mai north region 6-12 then head south, weather wise am I better being south earlier on in the month?

    5. Lastly, if I want an unforgettable experience, can anyone recommend a resort/hotel in an area with a "wow" factor in august? beautiful nature, scenery, beach etc...?

Sorry for all the questions, we just want to insure we'll get the most out of our "money borrowed" trip. Any other recommodations much appreciated. Thanks!!

Just a thought. No mention of taking the overnight train to/from bangkok to chiangmai. You will not loose any time since it is overnight. Cheap and comfortable sleepers. Around 800 baht per person.

  4. I used Rajah's on the workd of a lot of pals who swear by them. I just thought they skimped on shirt material and make them tight like Asian policemen like to wear ;-)

I like mine shirts to fit me in all the right places like shoulders, neck and arms but I do like a generous cut to tuck into my trousers and to have them a bit baggy so like Gulati's cut.

I have sent colleague there as well and they are happy - one coplained about the cuffs but as he sais he did not explain exactly how he wanted them but he is happy about everything else and the cuffs he can live with. I prefer a generous UK cuff as does he but other like the thinner US cut.

I have been to Samui a couple of times in August and July and can not remember too much rain - nothing to spoil a holiday. I went to Phuket in August and it rained the two whole days so i left early.

I was there early August last year and my boss the 2nd half of the month and we had great weather all the time.

Its all down to luck but your chances of rain are higher in Phuket and the werst coast generally at that time I think.

As you say though you can go to say Samui and see if its rainingmuch on the Phuket side then decide whether to go or not.

There is Koh Chang and Koh Samet further east but they are a lot less developed than either Samui or Phuket.

  5. Okay, thanks all for your views. As I stated previously, I have making an average of two trips a year from Vegas to CM for the last 10 yrs. Alwlays buying tix in Vegas from a consolidator in LA. The consolidator used China, Eva, Thai and Korean. Every year a different airline had better fares, but overall China was the cheapest. My wife and I chose to use Thai airlines for the simple fact that when we came to CM for an extended stay, other airlines (oh ya, United also), would not let us board because we did not have a visa, we always stayed at least 60 days. I know all the visa rules and I keep trying to tell the agents that you don't need a visa prior to departing, you can extend it in Thailand. Well they would have no part of that. Thai airlines is the only airline that would not balk at not having a visa. Anyway, this is getting off the thread. Just wanted to make others aware of this treatment.

Hope you get this, I'm new to this and not sure everything I try to do works. Okay, I'll have to email my friend in LA and get the phone info for you, it'll take a day or two.

So we stuck with Thai airlines, much more expensive, and now that they have non-stop flights from LA to BKK, price is even higher. Oh ya, we stayed with Thai also because of the miles...

I suspected there were no consolidators in bkk/thailand, but just thought i would ask.

My thoughts are scrambled right now and not thinking right (not sleeping well).

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Jimmy, can you PM or post here the details of the consolidator you know in LA. I live in Thailand and am trying to locate a reasonable ticket for my daughter to visit at Christmas. Fares are very high that time of year. She also lives inland, not in LA or SFO.

  6. Jeez, I cant believe that no one has mentioned Mike's hamburgers near the moat.

I think it is the best hamburger in Thailand. I live in Bkk and Mikes is usually one of my first stops when I visit Chiangmai. You have to tell the chef-gals to hold the cheese until they they serve the burger else the cheese melts and has no taste. Mmm looking forward to my next visit in March. I wish there was a branch in Bangkok.

I agree with you.. I love Mike's hamburgers

I was told Mike (61 yrs old) sold out his franchise and moved back to the USA. I tried to find out the reason, but the gal didn't know. This info was only a week old.

Best hamburger in Thailand! :o Worth every bite!

Tasty assemblage at Mike's but the beef is pretty tasteless. Much better, IMO, are the seven different kinds of grilled burgers at Chiangmai Saloon. Give 'em a try if you haven't.

BTW I just heard that Mike no longer owns Mike's Burgers. He sold it with plans to open a Mexican resto, so the story goes.

FYI, Mike's opened up a second location in CM. It's in the Anusarn Night market. As you enter Anusarn, before you come to the so called "food" area, look to your right, there's Mikes signage. Better yet, it'ls just a few doors down from the Pub, lost my brain, can't think of the name of it, oh, O'Malleys.

Also spoke to the gal there that worked at the original Mike's. They are going to open up a Mike's in bangkok. I'm sure she wouldn't know where, but said it's coming.

  10. Anyone know of any consolidators in bkk that offers discounted airline tickets to USA?

Any other knowledge of where to find discounted tickets would be nice.

    Thanks.

I'm a newbie and this is my first post. I live in Chiang Mai, just retired, but have been coming to Thailand for over 25 yrs almost on a yearly basis. Willing to meet new friends in CM.

  11. Does anyone know if there is a Kawasaki dealor in Chiang Mai? Any stories about good or bad experiences with it?

    Hi,

I have a Kawasaki Boss 175, I bought it when it was a year old, have 14,500 km currently. I'm thinking about moving up to a new one. Wonder if you'd be interested in looking at mine if you intend to purchase a used one. It's in great shape. I paid 49,000 baht a little over a year ago. Don't know what it would sell for now. We can negotiate if you like it. Give me a call, we can meet. 0898388074

    Thanks,

    Jim
