  1. Friend has just arrived in Bangkok, staying Sukhumvit 11 for a few nights before heading for Chiang Mai. He's done his back in - any recommendations for a good Thai massage in that area? (No, he doesn't need any help finding 'alternative' massage services :D - his resistance is weak, and he wants to be able to still walk by the time he gets to CM :) )...

Sukhumvit 22 May Massage closeby to the Queen's Imperial Park Hotel. Traditional thai massage only. Don't walk into any of the other places closeby as they generally do a lot more than the traditional massage. Most of their masseurs are good--300 baht for two hours.

  2. HI can anyone help me out I am trying to find a good hotel for a short stay of 2-3 days in Bangkok. It will be for me and my wife plus our 2 young children, both are around 2yrs old.

Can anyone recommend any hotels. All I can find on the web as being family friendly are the mega expensive ones like four seasons!

I am keen to hear from anyone with experience of a hotel in Bangkok with their family. Your help woul dbe much appreciated.

Take a look at the Imperial Queen's Park Hotel. They are located right next to the Bensiri Park, which is a beautiful park with running areas, a pond and numerous activities esp. in the late afternoon. The Emporium is also located closeby, at the other end of the park, closeby to the Phrom Phong BTS station. The hotel has a nice pool and workout facilities, as well as a large lobby. You can get a room for about $60 a night on www.agoda.com . Best of luck!

  3. Hard not to be smug when you're the greatest ever (by results). He was humble long enough (in particular when he was literally was the greatest when no one could do anything against him... until Nadal came along).

    :)

    And Murray

    Well Done Roger.

Rodick you bloody cry baby - accept defeat by a better player.

I thought Roddick took it pretty well. At least he didn't make any excuses which is what Federer usually does.

Roddick was beaten by a better player but Fed was still lucky to avoid defeat. He was a point away from being down two sets, in part due to excellent coaching. Being so close to victory, Roddick did a great job in congratulating Fed despite the heartbreaking loss. Roddick played a tremendous tournament, beating Hewitt, Murray(which some people will apparently not accept) and almost taking Fed out. :D

  4. Hi,

I'll shortly be moving to Bangkok for a number of months. Before I commit to a longer term rental apartment I want to get a feel for the different areas and also view a number of potential apartments. With this in mind I was wondering if anyone knew of any hotels with a decent weekly rental rate. Ideally not too too much about 5-7k per week. Not essential but if the hotel has internet that would be a bonus.

Any advice would be most appreciated!

    Many thanks,

    Mark

Starry Place at Soi Rangnam, next to Victory Monument, has weekly/monthly rates and is an excellent serviced apartment. . House by the Pond has weekly rates and is located off of Sukhumvit 22(housebythepond.com) . Premier Inn is a bit old but gives good monthly rates and probably will give you a decent weekly rate. Their number is 02-261-0401. Good luck!

  5. HI, would like to know if anyone knows where I can see the NBA All-star game, dunk contest etc etc..Will it be on UBC?

    Thank you

If you haven't seen the commercials, the NBA All Star Saturday show will be on ESPN on SUNDAY Feb 15th at 8:30 am. Replay scheduled for 6:30 pm. Best of luck!

Of course, you never know "what evil lurks" in the minds of the UBC scheduling personnel!!!

  6. And Fed apparently still has doubts in his own mind whether he can still beat Nadal, as demonstrated by his loss of concentration in the 5th set.

Purely psychological when playing Nadal. Fed demolished Roddick with power and precision in their semi-final match but couldn't produce the same levels against Nadal in the final...

I doubt whether Fed will ever regain the No.1 position.

Agree on both counts! First, Nadal has Fed beat psychologically. During the 5th set, it was purely psychological and after Nadal broke Fed, you could see that Fed wasn't in the match thereafter. Secondly, it is very doubtful that Fed can regain the #1 position, especially with so many other young talented players contending (Murray, Djokovic, Tsonga, Simon, Verdasco, etc.).

However, that being said, Fed's major goal(s) at this point in his career is to match, then surpass Sampras' record of 14 major titles. That is probably the major reason that Fed wanted to win this AO so badly that he broke down in tears during the AO finals ceremony. Especially, with all the tennis "legends" in attendance at the final, he was apparently under huge pressure to win and tie Sampras' record. I hope that he wins either Wimbledon or the US Open this year, or his chances of breaking Sampras' record may pass him by.

  7. however, Nadal is the supreme competitor and athlete. And Fed apparently still has doubts in his own mind whether he can still beat Nadal,

Hardly surprising, given that he was allegedly a client of Dr Eufemiano Fuentes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eufemiano_Fuentes

Funny that the quoted wikipedia reference makes no mention of Nadal as a client. Guilty until proven innocent!

While the subject lingers, this brings up the question of why the 2nd seeded Federer had the obviously more desirable draw, which allowed him to rest 2 full days versus the single day that the #1 seeded Nadal had prior to the final. Of course, it must have been the luck of the draw!!!

  8. am watching the mens open final right now and it looks like nadal is going to win.after losing to murray a couple of times earlier this year am wondering if the will to win more grand slams is fading away.a great player.

Fed is still a great player. He showed he can play with Nadal by adjusting his game so that he could attack Nadal's topspin more effectively even from his weaker wing, the backhand. In truth, Fed outplayed Nadal much of the match, however, Nadal is the supreme competitor and athlete. And Fed apparently still has doubts in his own mind whether he can still beat Nadal, as demonstrated by his loss of concentration in the 5th set.

With all the competition around this year, this may work to Fed's advantage. Guys like Murray, Tsonga and even Roddick can beat Nadal on a hardcourt, which could open up opportunities for Fed. The question is whether Fed can recover from this loss and display the championship form and especially the guttiness, he needs to break Sampras' record.

  9. Okay, its Australian Open time. There are lots of candidates to win the Australian Open Tennis Championships led by Andy Murray, who has beaten everybody recently but has never won a major before; Rafael Nadal, the French Open king with bad knees; Roger Federer, who needs one to tie and two to break Sampras' record; Djokovic, the defending champ, who still does the best Sharapova/Nadal imitations on the tour; Tsonga, Roddick, Simon, etc...

Who's your pick to win the Aussie Open this year?

  10. Does anyone know if the NCAA Championship Game will be on Television tomorrow morning?

    If so, WHERE?

    GO GATORS!

Gators are champs! Sadly, information was not listed in the True Visions schedule. What could have been terrific programming of the NCAA Football Championships, was sabotaged by a lack of scheduling information. True Visions should be more appropriately named "Lack of Vision".

  11. And i truly hope they'll amend some traffic rules in a way that this nonsense is stopped that entire fire companies get stuck solidly in traffic jams... i have observed that multiple times, a number of fire trucks, sirens blaring, stuck motionless as nobody bothers to make room for them. They even have to stop at red traffic lights! Unthinkable in the west. This holds true for ambulances as well, only police seems to be able to go where ever and however they want.

    Best regards.....

    Thanh

I agree entirely that the traffic situation is ridiculous! People ignore emergency vehicles even with their sirens blaring. Even on the night of the Zantika fire, I saw firemen pleading with drivers to let them through traffic being ignored. Apparently there are no laws to force drivers to give way to emergency vehicles, or enforcement is pathetic. In any case, it appears most drivers in Bangkok are more interested in getting to their destinations than saving people's lives!

  12. 30092426-01.jpg

Rescuers rush a man to a hospital after rescuing him out of the Sua Pa Plaza building, which was hit by a big fire last night.

    The Nation

Thanks for the great pics! It was good to see that Bangkok does have genuine fire fighting equipment. I'd just like to know where these fire stations are located, since I've never seen any in the Sukhumvit area. Since Sukhumvit has so many high rises, having centrally located fire fighting facilities is essential, especially due to traffic congestion!

  13. Thank you

    That sounds fantastic

Let me see what can i do, for the moment lets start with

15 % off for any Thaivisa member (7 days a week from 11 am till late) applicable in the full bill (single or for group)

Notice that soon I am preparing a tacos Sunday special "Taquiza" with good prices and more taco filling options, plus the other promotions I have been opening, such as Teachers night on Fridays (two free drinks with the order of food) and Ladies night on Saturdays (two drinks fro free with the order of food) both from 8 pm till late

In order to keep record I would need to make a "thaivisa" members list

So please feel free to send me a email with your names to

    Best regards

Don't speak for anyone else but I think its great that you are offering a discount for Thaivisa members! Thanks a bunch! :o

  14. When I passed by the Tacos and Salsa menu board yesterday, I noticed a hand written note which essentially said "30% discount for Thai"... Think I'll try Coyotes' weekday fajita special instead!

Serious? I was planning to head down there after reading some good reviews in this thread. But if they are doing that, or have ever done it, they will NEVER get a single baht from me, no matter how good their food is.

What is wrong with trying to get thai people to try Mexican food, when they don't even know where Mexico is.

I have discount for regular costumers and special promotions. when I am struggling to keep the business on.

Please accept my apologizes if that make feel offended, but this is Thailand, and I and in the same situation as you as been foreigner. And I use to feel very offended for it as well.

Unfortunately, that is the way that Thai people think and is they culture. And american friend came to night ago and suggested me to give some samples, other free food for Thai, but of course no, I am not going to do that.

    Cheers

Nothing if you ask me, some people here are too keen to provoke and compare your promotion with their bad experiences of being ripped off by thais with double pricing. Being it natural park entrance fees or something else where they have "lost" couple of hundred bahts being foreigner in Thailand. But maybe it might be good to give some discount for all who come in lunch hour if business is not good. Might bring some foreigners for lunch as well.

Just pointing out what the sign says. However, I do think this discussion has provides a great opportunity to promote Tacos and Salsa to Thaivisa.com members. I'm sure lots of Thaivisa Mexican food lovers would flock to your restaurant if you started a Thaivisa Tuesday special or something along those lines.

  15. Tacos & Salsa. The best in Bangkok by a country mile.

    Location?

    Suk Soi 18

    Thanks! :o

It's easy to miss even though it's close to the Sukhumvit entrance to Soi 18. It's on the right-hand side of the soi just before a large Indian restaurant with white tablecloths on the tables. I think the Indian place is called India Pavilion (but maybe not). Tacos & Salsa occupies a narrow space right next to the Indian place.

When I passed by the Tacos and Salsa menu board yesterday, I noticed a hand written note which essentially said "30% discount for Thai"... Think I'll try Coyotes' weekday fajita special instead!

  16. The OP of the thread is hilarious. To assume makes an ass out of u and in this case u again. Federer had to be knocked down sometime.

Funny how opinionated people get after the fact. Never heard a peep from this cr--p earlier and now he's a know it all!

Jimjim, you have amazing 20-20 hindsight!!!! LOL :o

    The OP

  17. Fed in a couple years at 29 will start to decline, Rafa is No.1 and even though Fed might win US open for next couple years i can't see him ever beating Rafa at the French, Fed might possibly win in Austrlia but Winbledon with Nadal and Murray at home will be very difficult.

2 years from now it will be:

    1. Nadal

    2. Murray

    3. Djokovic

    4. Fed

See Murray as definitely on the rise but agree that all of these guys are either injury prone or will be past their prime in a couple years. Nadal is so mentally tough that he will be on the top in a couple years but the others will be either in the lower part of the top ten or even as low as the top twenty. In two years, Fed will be retired.

    1. Nadal

    2. Del Potro

    3. Almagro

    4. Querry

    5. Tsonga

  18. Hi everyone!

I am an Occupational Therapist and Specialist Teacher working here in Bkk.

Tennis as a sport will help my student (8 year old boy) focus more and as well as improve his gross motor skills.

Can anyone help me find a club or a coach who can teach my student?

Must know how to speak English.

Our location is Suttisan. So maybe it's better, if it's just around the vicinity.

    Thanks!

    Xian :o

There is a sports complex with tennis courts close to Saphan Kwai on Soi Inthamara 12 or 14. It has about 4 courts and also has tennis instructors. Ask for a teacher named Pat. He teaches there frequently and speaks English. Don't have his number handy but if I find it, I will send it to you. I also know of a German instructor who speaks English well but he teaches at Suk 38, which is the other side of town. Finally Asia Hotel has a part time instructor who speaks some English but don't know if he is good or not. Best of luck!

  19. It's been a few months after I came here in Bangkok, and although I've managed to find a few tennis partners, I am always looking for more because I like playing against different players with different games.

I usually play at the Soi Klang Club near by the BTS Phrom Phong/Thonglor right off the Sukhumvit Soi 39/49 where I just got the membership for a year. If you are interested, below is the link of the club.

    http://www.rqclub.com/

Anyway, if anyone out there in Bangkok still looking for a tennis partner,

I can play anywhere near the BTS line.

I am a solid 4.0 player. I am looking for someone at 4.0-4.5, ideally. I am also a tennis gear fanatic, so if you are looking for someone to talk about tennis gears, you've got one here!! :o

I am a newbie here, but I do have more than 450 posts at TW (tennis-warehouse.com) and a member of TW Mid Atlantic Chapter!! :D

I would play you but you can probably beat me with your left hand! Oops, now I remember, you are left handed... I'll take you on if you play right handed! :D

  20. Yeah, rough first round loss to a no-namer.

Probably hasn't recovered from Wimbledon. Part of the issue IMO (yeah, we're all experts), is that he started focusing on topping Pete's record instead of taking it tournament by tournament.

    :o

Another early round loss by Federer! He has apparently lost some confidence and is now losing to guys that he used to be able to beat by winning the big points. Although I've read accounts that Fed is in a freefall, I think he still has time to pull himself together in time for the US Open.

However, it looks quite likely that there will be a new #1 next week assuming Nadal wins the next couple matches. Even if Fed falls to #2, his seeding will give him a decent draw in most tournaments. If he falls to #3, then he will have to beat either Nadal or Djokovic in the semis of the majors and/or Master's series tournaments, just to make a final. Then he will probably take a significant tumble in the rankings in a very short period of time.
