  1. We all know who is #1 in the world. Fed has dominated the world rankings for the past several years and that is not about to change. With the Australian Open about to begin, it is a good time to ask a more challenging question: Who will be #2 at the end of the year?

Nadal has been #2 for awhile now but his knees are bad. He no longer has that bounce and speed that he once had. Novak Djokovic is fast closing in on Nadal, as is David Ferrer, who finished 2nd in the year end Master's Cup (where he beat Nadal in straight sets). Andy Roddick still has the fastest serve in the world and the most famous coach. How about David Nalbandian who beat Fed twice in 3 weeks at the end of 2007?

Then there is Fernando Gonzalez, who beat Fed in the Master's Cup; Nikolai Davydenko, who has been stuck at #4 in the world for a long time; Andy Murray, who is coming back from a wrist injury and is currently leading the ATP Champions Race(counts only 2008 results). (The general rankings include points for one full chronological year.)

Who do you think will be #2 at the end of the year?

  2. Hello Everyone,

We have two small dogs (shitzu) who usually just hang out in our house or garden. They've got all their shots and what not and my kids want to take them out to a park. I've never seen anyone walking their dogs in a park here. Are dogs on leash even allowed? Any suggestions?

There is a private dog park at the end of Sukhumvit 39 called Ozono. See the attached link for more information:

  3. Hello everybody...I am from Argentina and I would like to know if there is some shop or place where I can buy South American food (but not talking about mexican please) Anybody can help me?

    Thank u very much...

Rio Grill at the Asia Hotel has Brazilian Food.

  4. Sorry for my dum qustion...Where is Fortune? Near any BTS? Is it new (since 2005, last time i was there)?

Fortune is at the MRT station Phra Ram 9 (Rama 9), as White Orchid posted, two stops from MRT Asoke. My experience at Panthip DVD's vendors is that many are dishonest, do not give receipts and will not exchange DVD's. I've had a vendor laugh in my face when I tried to exchange bad DVD's there, then taunt me saying "What are you going to do about it?". Without proper receipts, there is really nothing you can do about it except go someplace else...Fortune is my choice!!!

  5. My son and family arrive for a holiday in late March. We will need four rooms in total.

We usually stay at The Plaza Hotel on Surawong Rd as it's not far from the Post Office

    and I collect Thai stamps!

Would it be better to book the 4 rooms direct with the hotel by phone or post or book

them via the internet? And if via the net which agency is trustworthy?

    Thanks for your help

I've found its always cheaper to book with an online agency. If you doubt that, check with the hotel for their rate and compare it with the agency rates. Today I called one hotel which quoted me a rate of 1900 baht. The online rate was 1200 baht.) I use http://www.precisionreservations.com many times without a problem. I've always gotten good rates with them.

  6. Yeah bra,

used to spend time in Maui in the seventies as a youngster. My folks owned one of the very first condos at Kapalua. Sold it with the divorce fire-sale :o . Also, I have a good bradda that comes to Phuket for a couple months every year who lives on the big island.

63 and 64 are ESPN channels no? I understand the games will be on CBS and Fox.......

Need my playoff fix bra, withdrawls since my weekends in Vegas the first couple weekends of the schedule.

    HB,

Sounds like you hung out with "da surfer" gang in Lahaina. Too bad you had to sell off those Kapalua condos...Owww! That's a beautiful area with great surf spots. Just so you know, I try to cut back on my "da kine pidgin" since nobody understands it outside of Hawaii. Takes me back to "hana badda daze"...

    :D

  7. Cabbages and Condoms has a nice resort just outside of Pattaya, next to the Asia Hotel Pattaya. The grounds are very attractive and the rooms are great. They have a nice sized swimming pool and a small beach closeby. There is also a driving range next door, as well as the Asia Hotel, where you should be able to get internet(in case resort doesn't have) Finally, they have a very good restaurant with similar food to their BKK branch but right next to the beach. All for 2000-2500 baht a night! You can call the BKK branch to make arrangements at 02-229-4610.

  8. HB, Glad to be of service! If you didn't ask the question, I'd be wondering about the schedule myself. Kind of forced me to get off my butt and look it up...By your use of the lingo, guess you've been to Hawaii! Howzit!!!

As for why the games are being on TS3, you have to consult with the TrueVision people(gods). Probably due to some technical/scheduling difficulties they encountered adding on games at the last minute...good question but I think the main thing is that they are showing the games, LT. When the game time rolls around, probably best to check TS3, TS4, and ESPN! One day they may even schedule it on HBO!

Actually, MG, the best way to check the schedule for NFL games is to use the "Search" window at http://www.truevisionstv.com/index.aspx

In the first drop down window, select "Sports World". Leave the second window at "All Channels". Then select the "From - To" dates in the next two windows. Leave the times at the "All Times" default. In the "Key Word" space, enter "NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE", in all caps, as I typed it here. That will bring up the entire schedule, "live" and replays, for all of the sports channels.

Great PF! You are the man! Now everyone will be able to access the online schedule. Of course, only a few weeks left so hope I can recall this info next year...

  10. I've looked through this thread and have not found out how I am going to see this weekends games which are on CBS and Fox in the U.S.

Does anyone know if this South African satellite can retrieve the broadcasts?

Are we down to the mythical "slingbox" or the streaming feed which at times because of crappy connections gets the stop and starts?

    HELP !

Truevisions(UBC) will telecast at least 3 of the 4 games this weekend. This is what I've found so far:

Sunday 4:30 am True Sports 3(Ch.63)

    NFC Seattle-Green Bay

Sunday 8:00 am True Sports 3 (Ch. 63)

    AFC Jacksonville-NE Patriots

Monday 4:30 am True Sports 3 (Ch. 63)

    NFC NY Giants-Dallas Cowboys

That's what I've found so far on the TrueVisions website. If anyone knows about the Indianapolis-San Diego game, please jump in. Channel 64 (True Sports 4) lists an NFL broadcast at 1 am but doesn't specify the teams. The game is being played Sunday 1 pm EST, so there's a good chance they will telecast the Colts-Chargers game on Channel 64.

  11. Wow! Great performance by the Giants against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers...the Giants defense really shut down the Bucs and Eli Manning turned in another good performance to followup his great game against the Pats last week. Looks like the Patriots game got the Giants believing in themselves. Don't know how they will do against Dallas but they've already done better than most have expected.

  12. Last time I ate at Garage Burger was at their Wireless Rd. outlet. After a couple of bites, I bit into a piece of metal that resembled a gear, probably from the meat grinder. I left a message for the manager to call me, since he was out, but no one ever called. I like their burgers, but I can't patronize or recommend a place that is not responsible for such a huge mistake. Good burgers but chew carefully before you swallow!!!

  13. Hi, I'm looking for a serviced apartment in BKK for 3-4 months. Ideally within walking distance to a semi-Western grocery store (do they exist?). Near restaurants and nightlife of course as well. I've been to BKK a few times, but never looked at it from the perspective of living there.

Resources for finding a good apt online? Or should I wait until I'm there? At a minimum I'd like to narrow down an area of town.

For background, I'm late 30s, American, single, army brat, and decided to try something different for a few months. I'll likely be taking Thai classes, working out, spending time at the pool, trading stocks/futures, and partying a few nights/week. Any recommendations on where to start?

Also.. I'm not the most outgoing person, so any ideas on where/how to meet people would be cool.

There's a serviced apt on Sukhumvit 4 called SM Grande. Its a new place, built 2006, has fitness, wifi, swimming pool and all inclusive electricity/water for 20,000 baht a month. Very nice setup!

  14. I've jumped around to a few schools in my time here. Nisa Thai, Union, Unity and a couple other intensive schools all use basically the same text books. (Sometimes they give you handouts instead of the text because they don't like students knowing the lesson in advance.) Its a thai thing---they tend to indiscriminately copy each other. A thai teacher friend of mine said that Union was the first school, and eventually the teachers that left formed other schools, although using basically the same program/text.

The first month you can get away with speaking some English although the material goes very fast. Expect to spend a 3-4 hours a day in class 5x a week for a month, as well as a couple hours a day reviewing the material. If you don't study, or if you have a bad memory, you will get totally lost in a few days, since the teachers immediately use the materials very liberally from the day after it is taught. The 2nd month and on is immersion based, with little if no English allowed. Then it gets hard and very intensive in month 3, where writing is taught. You learn all the consonants and vowels in one month, then get a dictation and written test for proficiency to progress. If you don't pass, you have to repeat the course again--no remediation. By this time, about the only ones left in the class are Japanese and Koreans, with a smattering of other ethnicities. Anyhow, you get the idea.

From month 4 and on, you are taught increasingly more difficult passages and are tested on dictation skills daily. If you like to study 3-4 hours a day outside of class, its okay. The basic program is 6 months, followed by modules in specific areas of study. They eventually prepare you for the prathom 6 government test, which shows grade 6 proficiency in understanding, reading and writing skills. Fun, fun, fun,....

  15. Great game between the Jags and the Steelers. Steelers played a rotten first half but showed why they are a championship team in the 2nd half, coming back from 18 pts. down to take the lead. They almost stole the game away except for Garrard's heroics on 4th and 2 with just minutes to play. Game worth watching again!

Giants-Bucs game should be interesting depending on which Giants team shows up to play but the game of the day should be the Titans-Chargers game. No love lost between those two teams since the Vince Young-Shawn Merriman retaliation accusations in the game played between the two teams just a few weeks ago. Chargers also have a habit of losing in the 1st round... Tough to get up at 4:30 am but this one should be fun to watch!!!
