  1. Afternoon Gents

Just pushing this thread to the top again to see if there are any new experiences out there to be added.

    Cheers

Spent some time at AUA Rachadamri. Its a fun place to learn and great place to meet friends. On the other hand, learning thai there is a very slow process. Their philosophy is that you should the language as a child does, using immersion to some extent but not allowing you to speak thai for the first 4 or 5 levels. Each level requires 200 hours of study(appx 1.5-2 months), consequently, you can spend a 1000 hours of study without being allowed to speak even a "Sawatdii khap". Seriously, I was yelled at in class by a teacher for doing so.

At the same time, if you have 2 or 3 years to burn to learn the language properly, I've heard that many graduates do learn to speak thai with the proper accent. I don't know since i switched to a different program. (Interestingly, I still have friends I originally met at AUA.)

  2. Yep, Patsfangr, you are indeed the TSP Jedi Master! Thanks! :D

:D Thanks, MG. But you guys need to get into checking the "latest" on the TrueVisions website for yourselves. I don't mind doing it, and posting it; but what if I get hit by a baht bus, while dodging a speeding motorbike that's swerving around a huge pothole? You'll be lost! :o

Actually Patsfangr, I did check but only ESPN and TS4. Didn't bother to check other channels since they normally don't show NFL Football. Will do so next time. Meantime, you are still Jedi Master!

PS Don't get hit by a bus!!!

  3. Is there a short, snappy, common Thai expression to say to someone trying to jump in front of you? Something like 'I was here first' or 'wait your turn' or 'do you mind?' or 'there's a queue here'. Would be helpful in many situations in Thailand.

One day, a well dressed woman cut in front of me in 7-11. I said "Chai queue dai mai?" She actually looked shocked I said something, turned red and went to the back of the line. :o

  4. Does anyone know if the LSU/Ohio State game will be televised live in Bangkok?

Its not in the TrueVisions schedule, printed or online version, so I think we're out of luck. Right now, Orange Bowl game being played but also not being televised.

Someone on a different link gave this website "Direct Drive". Haven't tried it as yet but you apparently can get the replay for a small fee.

Search under Ohio State and the BCS game will come up.

  5. Have taken him to yo-yo land, done all the parks, did the underater water Siam thing, been to the zoo (twice)!!

Any ideas for a bright and energetic kid who is too young for rollercoasters?

Please don't suggest Nana or Soi Cowboy - been there, done that when he was 2 - the girls loved him but my Mrs. almost killed me ; )

    M&M

Try Gymboree--it has several locations including Sukhumvit 49. Check the website: http://www.gymboree.co.th/2005%20Website%2...e/contact.shtml

  6. We're going to Koh Chang and have conflicting advice on which beach to visit. thai wife, 3 yr old daughter, grandpa and I.

White Sands, Lonely or another beach?

Which pier is best to use (with our own car)?

All we want is three quiet days with a nice clean beaches, nowt too expensive (1,000B/night is ok), and somewhere for a drink in the evening.

    Thanks, y'all

White Sand Beach has more traffic, however, for a reason. It has the cleanest, whitest sand on the island and the water is quite clean. If you stay at White Sand Beach Resort, you can get a more isolated area although you will have to walk a ways. Lonely Beach is fine, as is Klong Prao Beach, and a bunch of others but for my money, I'd choose White Sand Beach.

There's an American Football Forum on this site? Where can I find this?

Thanks. I need all the help I can get...

Its in the Community Forums under Sports, Hobbies and Activities. I suggest you do your posting on that "thread". You'll get better results.

    P.S. I'll take Heineken!

    Shaken, or stirred?

A true American--his word not even as good as his humour!!!

  8. Hey Guy

Can you please point me toward the "American Football" thread? I'll be in Khorat for the first round (after wildcard weekend) and the conference championship games, and Bkk for the Super Bowl.

If you listen to the Super Bowl hype, 1 billion people watch the game. So there must be some interest in the LOS.

You can find the American Football thread in Community forums under Sports, Activities and Hobbies.

I'm sure that the playoffs and the SuperBowl will be televised here

...if there are no soccer matches scheduled at the same time

...if the game is played on Sunday

...if it doesn't cost too much for the broadcasting rights

    ...etc.

  10. Hi all looking for a little help here. I want to watch the Charger game but I am stuck here in Samui every time I ask someone about the game they look at me like I have 2 heads. Does anyone know of a place where I could watch the game? Even on delay. If it helps I'm in Lamai but have motorbike will travel.

    Thanks,

    Go Bolts!!

I assume you have TrueVisions(UBC) available. Just find a friend who has the Gold/Platinum package and buy the beer. The game should be broadcast on TrueSports4, channel 64 (BKK) Monday morning at 4:30 am and re-telecast at night (probably 9:30 but 7:00 also possible-UBC schedule doesn't specify). Should be able to find a bar open by that time of night. Best of luck! :o

  11. I'll buy a pitcher of beer for anybody who can help this Yank. I know this forum is for discussing Manchester and Liverpool, but my first love is the Patriots, Cowboys, Steelers, Green Bay and Da Gints.

I'll be in Khorat and Bkk for the playoffs/Superbowl, and would give anything (even free beer) to find a place to see the games live, or even with a short time delay. Channel 64 will probably have the games, so there has to be some place that will show them.

Help, please! And I'll never complain about Beckham again.

This weekend's games are on Channel 64 Monday morning probably as follows:

1 am NY Giants-Tampa Bay Bucs

    4:30 am Tenn Titans-SD Chargers

There are scheduled re-telecasts at 7 pm and 9:30 pm. Looks like the Saturday playoff games are not scheduled for telecast at this point. Check the American Football forum for any updates.

  12. Ok, can't promise anything but here's a link regarding compromised registry files with a manual solution that sounds very much like your description above. Anyhow, take a look and see if this hp link is useful:

Hope it helps! Above suggestion to go to the dealer is a good one altho' I'm sure money will have to pass hands. Good luck!

  13. i heard there is dvd shop there that sells world cinema?

According to a friend of mine, there is a DVD shop called Square One which sells DVD's including classic movies on the 4th floor of Fortune City Mall. :o

  14. According to the TrueVisions tv schedule, there are two games scheduled early Monday morning on channel ts4(TrueSports4) at 1 am and 4:15 am. There should be re-telecasts at 7 pm and 9:30 pm. In short, keep that sex kitten at home for yourself and hit the bars at night to catch a re-telecast at a reasonable hour.

Nothing on the schedule for Saturday games although TrueVisions has been upgrading their schedule of American Football. Last weekend, for example, they showed the Pats-Giants game even though it was not on the formal schedule. Check the American Football thread for updates...

  15. I'm looking for where I can find a Fox broadcast of the Cotton Bowl, Missouri vs. Arkansas, on Monday night 11:30pm Thailand time.

UBC / True Visions has only ESPN, not CBS, not Fox, not ABC.

Are these non-ESPN channels even available in Asia by any satellite?

    Any hotels or anywhere else?

You are probably out of luck as previous posters have indicated. However, you might want to switch between TSP4(ch.64) and ESPN(ch.65) just in case. Sometimes TrueVisions makes changes in its schedule. Recently they have shown increasingly more college and pro football, as well as basketball, which are oftentimes not listed in the printed schedule(e.g. New England Patriots game against the NY Giants).

  16. My ex wife and I have been trying to sell our house in Bangkok for more than 1 year through an estate agent.

Does anybody know of any companies or banks that will buy a house at a discounted rate for a quick sale?

It doesn't quite address your question but did you try craigslist? Its the fastest way to get visibility in most major cities around the world.

  17. Okay, I've been around a bit but I still haven't any real words of wisdom to give a person living in Thailand. 2007 wasn't the best year for me, so I'm looking for your thoughts on how to live happily in Thailand in 2008 and on. I'd bet this has been done in the past but right now it's the new year and this is the time of the year many people are thinking about changing the way they live. Give your golden rule for 2008. :o

No matter how long we live here, we are "guests in someone else's house". Sometimes the hosts are welcoming and courteous, other times rude and unpleasant. When out of town, do as the thais prescribe, "jai yen yen"...
