  1. I've used NacLong or acetylcysteine for several years since it was prescribed to me by the doc at Phyathai Hospital... only recently became it was used essentially for lung decongestion. I want to emphasize that it does work, not miraculously quickly, however, reliably. It is the only thing that has worked reliably for me besides antibiotics and fluids containing sodium bicarbonate.

Problem with sinusitis in general is that there are very few doctors that have taken it seriously enough to become proficient in its treatment.(Probably because few patients die from it.) Those that are knowledgeable are probably the ones who have personal experience with it. Those are far and few between. Consequently treatment of the condition is rarely effective or long lasting. Unfortunately, it leaves those of us that are affected by it, with essentially do it yourself treatments.

Wise words. I think I'll get back on it at the very least it's an antioxidant. I've also heard good news about Danzan.

FYI, don't know if it makes a difference but Nac Long comes in an effervescent tablet form, normally in tubes of 5/10 tablets.

  2. I recently moved into a new building and I wish to order cable TV. Is TrueVisions the only company that provides cable TV? Also am I reading the pricing right that is costs 9500THB for the installation?!

Wow! That's a lot for installation considering sometimes they offer it for free! Check around for specials before paying that much for installation. Or check the website http://www.truevisionstv.com/ .

Took a quick look myself and apparently they do have a promotion for installation of 1000 baht and 3 free programs for a month (promotion beginning Jan 1st). I'd wait till the 1st and check again.

From what I recall, they also have special promotions if you use their hi-speed internet service and mobile phone services. You can probably get hi speed internet 1 mps for 590 baht a month.

  4. Well ive just had a Christmas Card from some friends in the Uk, and they would like to visit Thailand some time during in 08, they are a married couple in their late 50's Not traveled too much abroad , As ive only been to a few areas here in Thailand

Can any one suggest places that may be suited for a quiet and not too adventurous couple could visit, I was thinking of telling them the best time to come here is between November and February ? any ideas or suggestions welcome.

    Thanks :o

Sounds like they should stay close to Bangkok, where the flies are few and their friends are closeby (you). If they do stay in Bangkok, then there are always the old standbys:

    1) Rose Garden, Nakon Prathom (45 minutes away from BKK)

    2) Floating Market (can take a tour day trip)

    3) Safari World (an hour and half away); Dream World(about the same)

    4) Day trip to Kanchanaburi (Death train and the River Kwai)

    5) Ayutthaya (by boat)

    6) and maybe Pattaya...

There are many tourist attractions within the city, plus all the conveniences of a city including English speaking people, easy transportation, familiar foods and of course, bathrooms!!!

Then again, if not Bangkok, then next best is probably Chiang Mai.

  5. hi thank you for looking,we are going to be at the centre point silom bangkok 1jan 3 nights

whats around ,places ,food thai ect tips about getting about would be great ,

Okay, 2nd honeymoon so I think Pat Pong is out. If you haven't been to Bangkok recently, or at all, you might try the following:

    1) Silom Village has a great dinner/classical Thai dance show which is a bit touristy but still pretty good.

    2) Dinner cruise from the Marriot Royal Garden Riverside(02-476-0021) or Shangrila Hotels

    3) Sala Rim Naam dinner show at the Oriental Hotel

    4) For a little spice, go to the Calypso ladyboy show at the Asia Hotel (02-215-0808)

    5) Other places to dine include Cabbages & Condoms(Sukhumvit), Royal Kitchen(dim sum) and more.

  6. The Pats' are going for a bunch of records in there last regular season game this weekend. Does anyone know if it will be shown anywhere? Kickoff is as 08:15 on Sunday morning.

According to the American Football forum, it should be on True (TS4) Sunday morning.

  7. Mauiguy, good advice for everyone here. Had two questions for you...

    1. You mentioned NacLong...I've never heard of that. What exactly is it, and where do you get it?

    2. I've been seeing a sinus doc at Burumgrad. But if you've had good experience with a sinus doc you'd recommend, please pass that along.

    Thanks very much, John.

    Hey John,

Sorry didn't see your post until now. NAC long is Acetylcysteine, used for diseases of the respiratory tract used for addressing severe mucous secretions. I had it prescribed by a doctor from Phyatai Hospital, however, I didn't get his name. You can get it from most pharmacies but seems like writing it for the pharmacists is the best way to get what you want.

I got a lot of information from the following website: http://www.sinuses.com/faq.htm#treatment . Good luck!

  8. hi all, flying into Bkk tomorrow (friday) night and won't be hitting DM airport until around 8:30... i *really* need to find somewhere like a mall w/ a proper toy store in it to do some shopping if at all possible at this hour. a friend told me none of the Bkk malls stay open later than 9pm but a websearch brought up one site that said the Emporium on Suk is open till 10. i just need somewhere w/ a nice toy store where i can pick up some good quality stuffed animals, not the stuff you find being sold off the carts late-night down near Nana...

any tips? can i make it to Emporium or is this a lost cause due to late arrival? showing up w/ gifts-in-hand for the kids would be really welcome, thx in advance all..!

Robinson's has a fair selection of stuffed animals as well. Not sure of their hours but suspect they are open till 10 pm at Asoke.

  9. For the last three weeks I've had terrible blocked sinuses. I'm not sure whether it's sinusitis or rhinitis. I went to the doctor who prescribed anti-histamines which have had little or no effect on clearing the problem. If I use Nasol the problem disappears but only for a few hours and I don't like to keep using it. It's worse when I lay down to sleep at night. Both sinuses become totally bloked and I can only breathe through my mouth. It's beginning to worry me now. Before I go and see another doctor does anyone else have any experience of this?

    1. Limit use of decongestants-they only temporarilly address symptoms. Meds like actifed/sudafed tend to dry out mucous which eventually buildup. The mucous buildup can be problematic if you continually use decongestants.

    2. I use a simple penicillin called ampicillin which you can get at the pharmacists when I have a sinus infection. If that doesn't work, then I will use something stronger like curam, which is a fortified amoxcillin.

    3. Saline rinse with sodium bicarbonate. If you can get the sinus rinse kit from NeilMed, it probably works the best. Soda water (not soda) contains sodium bicarbonate as well, which can help clear up sinuses. Try it, it works!

    4. Have used NacLong, which breaks down the mucous buildup albeit slowly. However, in a few days, it does clear up sinuses.

    5. Hot baths, vaporizers, saunas, etc. all work but tend to be short term fixes.

Good luck! I had sinusitis for almost a year before I got long term relief. Good information and doctors who know how to address these problems are hard to find. If one doc doesn't work, by all means, change doctors!!!

P.S. If you get really desperate, PM me and I can share a few packets of sinus rinse with you. You will have to purchase some type of squeeze bottle to apply the sinus rinse.

  10. As I was jousting for position at the cash register at Top's Silom, I found myself looking straight at a cluster of great looking navel oranges. Maybe I don't go looking for them often enough but I was shocked to find them here in Bangkok, especially since its in the middle of winter.

On closer examination, looks like they are from China(?) since they are labeled "Luo's Yu-He Fresh Fruits Trading Co." Haven't had one yet but hopefully I won't drop dead from rat poison...

So, NOW what do you think of TrueVisions, NFL fans?!!!

PLEASE, take a moment to tell them that you got this news from me, and THANK THEM for their efforts. We have their attention, and we really should show our gratitude, don't you think?

Well, I'm impressed with your results! Congratulations! I'm in shock...Football on Sunday morning? Just like being back home! :o

  12. Can you beat this scenario?

I faxed a wire transfer order to Charles Schwab on Monday Night, 12/17 at 11:00pm in Chiang Mai (11am EST Monday) and the money was put in my account at SCB in Chiang Mai at 11:51 am Tues 12/18.(11:51pm EST Monday).

Schwab does say if your fax reaches them by 12:30 EST they will wire out the money the same day. This is the first time I didn't get a confirmation call, as I have done this three times this year, same amount, same bank. I put on my wire transfer form "Ignore timezones if confirmation call needed, call ASAP" so they don't delay the transfer by waiting for waking hours here to call.

Their wire transfer office is in the south west, so may be on MST or CST, so probably reached them in midmorning, giving them the ful day to get it out. It was their Monday, the busiest day for them, I suspect.

The conversion rate +any fees, and I don't think there are any, was 33.48 on a day the BKK Post reported 33.62 at 6pm closing Monday.

Truly amazing when you hear all the horror stories that abound. Also many banks wait a day to deposit it to improve their "float" but not SCB evidently.

Free wire transfer from Schwab as well.

With a 15 minute process time to get a retirement extension last month, I am in a real positive zone!!! Happy Holidays!!!

Yep, Schwab just provides excellent and efficient service. I tried a wire transfer with TD Waterhouse and they took two weeks. Schwab took two days! :o

  13. Christmas eve dinner with turkey at the Taipan Hotel for 500 baht; Christmas lunch is 350 baht(I called-no Christmas dinner being served). Call 02-260-9888 if you want to check the menu or make reservations. (The Taipan Hotel is located on Sukhumvit 23, about a block up the street from soi Cowboy. It is modestly priced but generally does a good job with a simple but not elaborate buffets.)

Of course, if you want upscale there are lots of choices.

  14. I'm thinking about buying a condo. I have enough money in a thai bank for over 3 years. But, i've heard that it has to show the money was wire transferred to a thai bank. The money I have in a thai bank was deposited by using a ATM withdrawal or cash withdraw by my credit card. So will I have a problem in purchasing a condo?

My impression is that the document showing that the money was wire transferred to a thai bank is necessary when you want to take the money out of the country. If and when you sell your condo, it will be difficult to transfer the money out of the country since it will be a relatively large sum of money. In short, buying a condo should not be a problem. Transferring the money out of the country thereafter could be.

  15. I am looking to rent a room for 10 days in the Victory Monumnet area as there is a large gym close by.

Can anyone recommend a hotel in this area in the 1000baht a night range.

    Thanks in advance

There's a serviced apartment called Starry Place in soi Rangnam, which is adjacent to Victory Monument. Very nice and pretty modern 1 bedroom suites for about 1000 baht a nite. Has its own restaurant, room service and very good service. You can rent by the day or week. Have stayed there many times myself and very satisfied. Phone number 02-246-4477 and has web site http://www.starryplace.com .

  16. Cabbages and Condoms on Suk Soi 12 is very nice, in that the food and service are good, prices reasonable, and they have an outdoor garden seating area with twinkly lights at night (a ladies thing... :o ). The large selection of condoms on display also could make for an interesting dinner conversation opener.

Yep, Cabbages and Condoms is a beautiful but casual place and makes for fun conversation. I also like Baan Kanitha on Sukhumvit 23.

Went to L'Opera on Sukhumvit 39 and found it to be very cozy and intimate. Great place to hang out and talk. We stayed there for close to 3 hours and practically closed the place without being interrupted. Enjoyed it thoroughly!
