  1. Have people forgotten that until 30 odd years ago caning was common place in English schools and was completely acceptable. In my view caning , properly carried out, never did anyone any harm. I was caned myself on several occasions and believe it taught me the right lesson. The threat of the cane often acted as a deterrent without it being needed to be carried out. Since corporal punishment was banned in English schools discipline has become a major problem as teachers have few ways to punish pupils and even have to ask parents permission before giving a detention.

Some of the yobs in our societies today would have benefited from a good caning in their youth!!!

  2. I live 80kms south from Surat Thani near Don Sak. There are a few Farangs around but not many. As to Farang bars I have not found many yet. The nearest reasonable one to me is a further 30kms south in Khanom!!!

  3. I am married to a Thai University lecturer. She is what the Thais call a Government officer (Civil servant in UK)

I have free medical and dental cover as a result of being married to her.

She enabled the cover through the personnel section of her University so I imagine your wife can do the same through her school. I have a reference number and if I need Medical or dental work i simply quote that number.

Sorry i cannot tell you what happens after retirement. My wife is out of the country until 30 May and if you still need to know more I can ask her on her return

  4. I would suggest Khanom, midway between Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat. Nice beaches, few tourists, quiet , relaxing.....

If you want to know more you can **please PM --do not feed the spammers thanks--sbk***

  5. I would go for Samsung NC10. I am very pleased with mine. Battery life is around 6 hours if you are surfing or word processing. Watching DVd drops it to about 4 hours. Comes with a free External DVD reader/write and all for just over 10,000 baht

  6. I will be driving from Khon Khaen to Mukdahan in early September.

I would welcome any recommendations as it would seem like a trip north to Udon and then onwards (a dog leg) to take advantage of good roads.

Or from Khon Kaen to Kalisan and then onwards on 'B' Roads,

    Any comments much appreciated.

That's a very long way round. I go there quite often. It takes about 3h30m approx 250km. I go via Kalasin. If you want a detailed route let me know

  8. Excuse me if the answer to my query is already here in another posting!

I arrived in Thailand on 16 August with 3 x 60 day Tourist Visa issued in UK. The last of these expires 9 January. I am currently in Chiang Mai. Can I exit Thailand (at Mae Sai) and come straight back and get a 30 day Visa on Arrival?

If I can do this I presume I need 20,000 baht with me plus my return ticket. Do I need anything else?

If this can be done can I do it 2 further times therby using up my 90 days in 6 months allocation?

Thanks in advance for any replies and apologies once more if this is already covered elsewhere

How about going to Chiang Mai Immigration and getting a 30 day extension at a cost of 1,900 Baht.

Did not know I could do that. That sounds much easier. What documents etc will I need?
