  1. I have the same question. I baked a wonderful batch of brownies once on my weber charcoal cooker. Burned off all the grease, whipped up the mix and used a standard oven thermometer to check the temp. A fine time was had by all as a result. But I wouldn't want to do a whole lot of baking that way and was wondering if a gas bar-b-que grill can be had somewhere for less than a small fortune?

  2. I just painted a new house and used an enamel based paint of the trim (wood) and an acrylic base on the concrete. Sorry don't remember the manuf. name and don't have any data handy. I think that probably the painter is more important than the paint. Make sure he doesn't dilute it too much and that enough coats are applied to provide adequate coverage. Weather is also important. It is the rainy season and rain and paint are not a very good combination. Just my opinion, I am certainly not an expert coatings guy.

  3. I agree with PB, doubt that one really retires at 40, just changes direction. However comma, seems to me if you have been here long enough to get hit by a car whilst bysycling, twice, and spend a month in a Thai hospital, you should have most of the answers you are seeking.

  4. A dangerous area for sure, even at the lights. I am surprised there aren't more tragic incidents in the area considering the amount of traffic and pedistrians. As I read this thread I flashed back about 9 or 10 years. I was on the sidewalk heading for the light at Sukhumvit & Soi 4 when I had the big toe on my left foot broken by a motorcyle. To add insult to injury, I took a reactive swing at the rider and connected. Unfortunately he was probably the only motorcy guy in BKK in those days to wear a helmut so I broke two fingers on my right hand and he didn't even go down, wobbled but stayed upright. "and fled the scene."

  5. This is an interesting thread because it shows the broad differences in how we falangs define poor. I consider Issan farmers certainly materially poor. But far from destitute or trapped in the vicous poverty circle like many countries.

Thailand has always been able to feed itself, which I think is the first requisite to avoiding destitution. It's really hard to change or accomplish much when the people must scrabble every minute of every day just to try to keep their kids from starving, and eeven so, sometimes without success.

  6. If you buy them from one of the reputable suppliers mentioned above they probably know the documentation required for import. The place I used said they shipped anywhere.

On another note, wonder how many pepper growers there are in Poland. I just don't associate hot peppers with that part of the world. Even fresh paparika is mild to medium hot at the most. Not that it matters much, but regardless of what happened to the cat, curiousity still rears its ugly head once in awhile.

  7. I understand all the world's peppers originated in Mexico. I don't recall ever seeing habeneros in markets here or in thai food. I puchased some jalapeno and haberno seeds on-line from www.gourmetseed.com and had them shipped out here. I'm not a pepper expert but see nothing special about thai chiles. Hot is hot, everywhere.

  8. The little I know about Thai politics + what I do know about the opinions of the farmers around my house makes me tend to agree with Ulysses G. My neighbors all miss Thaksin and have what seems to be pretty sound reasons for doing so. Dumb lil' ole me only knows anytime the military throws out a duly elected government it is nothing but bad, and wrong.

I'm new here but how did we get to Burmese workers? Isn't that pretty far off the subject?

  9. Trap-shmap. I realize it takes 75% of our blood and 100% of our brains to create an erection, but when it's gone does that mean our brain must remain unusable. What makes a relationship, charity, or decency different in Thailand than anywhere else in the world? NOTHING!!! What makes deciding on who to help, who to ignore, or who to advise different in Thailand? NOTHING!!! If I have money and see someone in my (which includes my wife's parents) family in need, I do what I can. The main reason I married the woman I did is that it was very obvious she had been raised by caring, hard working, decent people. This shows in every thing she does. This trait is not unique to Thailand, it is the same the world over. That old saying about the acorn not falling far from the tree is accurate indeed. So what is the question here? Would anyone that posts some of the crap in this thread go to Amsterdam and marry the girl in the first window on Canal street? I guess my point is, have those guys spent all sense of reason and decency chasing LBG's???? Real life beckons and all it takes to live it fully is participation. And a few bob helps a lot.

  10. Upon reflection this seems to be a really dumb question, but I would like to know the form, or format, of the income verification document. I am coming up on the 1st extension of my retirement visa. When I obtained it in the US the Consulate accepted 3months of downloaded copies of my bank statement that showed the deposits of my monthly pension and SS payments. What does the embassy need in order to get the verification? Thanks for any help.
