  1. I live around 90kms NW of Korat and I'm pretty sure that it is not my imagination that the mango trees on and around my place have many more flowers this year than last. I mean, the trees are about 30% green and 70% whatever the flower color is. This is only my second year around here but I lived between Rayong and Ban Phe for 6 years and never noticed the trees so loaded. Am I off base here.

The locals are telling me this means it will be a good "raining" year and I'm thinking hel_l, 30% of the rice drowned last year.Any thoughts?

  2. I had dirt moved onto the land around my house this last hot season so now that I am putting in my little veggie garden i have a plot of new dirt. It came from a rice paddy and is very rich clay and hard to work by hand.

Long ago and far away I built a new house on what had been a rice field west of Houston, Tx, and the ground was about the same. The first year when I put in my garden I turned it over with a potato fork and broke 5 or 6 handles. My dad told me to work in 400lbs of gypsum which I did, had a beautiful garden that year and the next year I turned it over with a hoe.

So, this has been a long route to the question can I buy agricultral gypsum here? If so, what is it called and/or how is it packaged? Any help would be appreciated.

  3. I have never been able to understand these threads. I took care of my parents for over 20 years after they retired. Seemed fair to me since I had the means and they had taken care of me for my first 18. I had 2 falang wives and gave both of them money whether they worked or not, it's called a joint account. I also "helped" their parents on occasion. I see no reason that I should/would treat my thia wife any differently. So I guess my question to all you "I have never given my ..........", does this make me stupid or you just selfish (he said trying to be "nice)?

  4. My neighbor's husband is/was head of security at a factory in BKK. It has over 2,000 employess, been in operation for over 35 years and closed this week. He will stay for 2 more weeks to secure the premises, then come home with 4 weeks severance after working there over 25 of those years. I'm thinking it is just the beginning of some really bad jojo.

  5. This is probably an "idiots" solution. When I am interested keeping up with a topic, whether I posted in it or not, I add it to my "Favorites". I created a folder called "Thai Visa" in the links portion of my browser. I clean it up every so often and get rid of finished topics. Pretty lame but simple way to go to the threads I am interested in.

  6. I first saw them while having a whiz break around 18:45 maybe 10 days ago. The brightest one (Venus?) had disappeared by my next trip to the side of the house so my wife thought I was influenced by Leo. After a week or so I decided the higher one was venus. The lower one is so bright I thought maybe it was the space station or somehting man made. I've been meaning to ask about them on here but never got to it. Thanks for clearing it up for me. I live in the boonies so they are very bright and a most beautiful sight.

  7. You stick with what u elected for better or worse - once every Thai realizes this then we can move forward. However until then we have to deal with instability and this circus like environment.

Richard M. Nixon was forced to resign in disgrace. Once the person you elected proves to be a criminal

you don't let up on him or his cronies. Perhaps the Thai's realize a little more than you think.

I don't recall a storming of JFK. Did I miss something in this comparison?

  8. "The PAD are peacefully demonstrating as is their right"......I have my doubts that this includes closing down Int'l airports.

"Like all law abiding citizens" I have my doubts that this includes firing into the crowd as shown on numerous video clips.

Bottom line for me, political beliefs and sitiuatins not withstanding, taking over and closing down an int'l airport and putting thousands of innocent travelers at risk is not acceptable under any circumstances. The fact that it happened (fisrt time anywhere in my memory) but has been allowed to stand confirms. not only that no one is in charge, or knows what to do. No matter which side of this fiasco you support, you are going to lose on this one.

  9. Sounds like your Krok might be a t fault. Get a new one.

    Have a nice day.

what is a krok? if it's the mortar and pestle, i'm not using that, just squeezing with my hands.

IMHO making som tam is more of an art than a task. Kind of like making good chile or pasta sauce, you either have the talent or don't. Ever notice here in Thailand there is no such thing as OK som tam, it is either really good or total <deleted>?

i don't understand how it could be an art, cuz the ingredients are so small and the combination is pretty simple... but evidently there is something to it. lol, i can fork down the som tam i make, but yes, it's more out of nostalgia rather than enjoying the taste... i've tasted much better som tam in thailand.

Ah, there-in may lie your problem. The "art" part is in the selecting and combining of ingredients, as i said like in gumbo or chile. There are at least hundreds of possibilities. If you travel around Thailand you will find vast differences in taste, ingredients, temperature, et al. I love the stuff and the best I ever eaten was in Nong Khai, the worst, Bangkok. Remember, your expectations are based on what you have eaten here and if you get close to that you may have to accept that's as good as it gets. My wife is a very good cook but cannot come even close to edible som tam, but luckily we have an excellent shop near by.

Now this is serious stuff, a thread that is not about Obama, visa runs, cheating wives, etc. Thanks.

  10. I think every thread I have read about the election of Obama contained at least one question like, "What does this have to do with Thailand?"

I've tried, really hard, to understand how someone could, even jokingly, ask that question. Is there someone out there, including maybe someone who asked, enlighten me as to the reasoning behind it? Be specific please, because I am obviously pretty thick. Thanks.

  11. Ok, What is American food?

A sandwich of yellow/orange sliced processed cheese, lettuce and sliced tomato with a "healthy" helping of fake mayo on white (wonder) bread. :o

    Now, dat's Americain. :D

Funny, the last meal I ate on American soil was grilled rainbow trout(caught by me in the White river just below Cotter, Arkansas) with apple salsa, baked potato, fresh summer squash, and a mixed green salad, all ingredients grown on my son's land. Even had a nice Abeja (Washington State) Cabernet with it. Ya' see, drinking red wine with fish, seems fairly American to me.

  12. I knew some (insert adjective of choice) would ask "what is American food?" when I saw the title of this thread. I have long wondered why, no matter the context or intent, when the word "American" is used, there is always at least one somone to offer a smug, belittling, asinine comment.

  13. I agree that Foodland has a very well trained staff that is most helpful at all times. In addition, it is well planned and laid out in a mostly logical and efficient scheme. It also helps, I found, to go pretty early in the morning, say 6:30ish.
