  1. Just how big is this house? My sister-in-law had her two year old two story house raised about a meter. New piles and concrete posts were installed. This wasn't because of surrounding water but poor original foundations.

From what you describe this might be the only permanent plan.

It's 2 floors and about 300 sqm. How big was your sister's place? In Thailand? How much did it cost and how long did it take?

Her place is about 200 SQM two floors and in Bangkok. The cost about 200,000. I think it was about three weeks to complete the job. They had to drive piles pour footings then ports. Quite a messy job.

  2. SketchUp is a powerful program. Now up to version seven. If you put your design in Google earth it will scale to the land you put it on. Great for sizing house to land although it will just be on your computer.

  4. Naam is the photo of a whole house fan? If so what is its size and is that wood above the blades.

Most of the smaller exhaust fans I have seen have a damper located on the exhaust side to prevent dust falling through if mounted horizontally and that should help with the warm air. Thinking about it warm air rises so even with the fan off heat should still escape.

  5. If you have any kind of access outside the house before the pipe hits the tank, you can possibly install a P or S trap creating a barrier so the smell/gas doesn't make it back up through the drain......

This idea seems to make the most sense. Blocking the air flow = no smell.

  6. Have to agree with you canopy. With Google Sketchup you can have all your drawing to scale. I am using it to design my new place. When I’m happy with the plan will just give it to the architect. He uses this program to show design changes to clients. Not only good but fun to use.

  7. Well if fifteen years is the expected life of these blocks there will be a lot of masons in these countries that will be very happy as they all manufacture autoclaved aerated concrete blocks.

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, France, Hungary, Holland, Poland, Slovakian Republic, Slovenia, Switzerland, USA, Mexico, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Peoples Republic of China, Japan, Australia, Turkey, Israel, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, India, Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Denmark, Korea, Iran, Iraq, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Spain, USA, France, Finland, Norway, Brazil and Latvia.

Maybe we should inform them. Oh think I will pass on the humidity meter check.

  8. Plan to use gas concrete blocks in my next build the same as I have done on my last two remodel/addition. Never noticed any cracking of walls in the kitchen but even if there was I would not be able to see them as the cabinets cover everything. When the aircons were installed they put in about ten screws still no problem or cracks but it has only been about eleven years. :) As for my bathrooms the walls are covered with tile so if my house isn’t flooded by a few meters of water guess there shouldn’t be a problem. Although the moisture sealant idea is helpful thanks stgrhe.

  9. I didn't tally it up exactly, but incl. the solar panel (about 109 Euro if i remember correctly) it all came to appr 8000 Baht. I could probably run a 10 W bulb for gazillions of hours on the grid for that money, but it wouldn't be quite the same, would it ?

How true if we did all things on a cost return base it would be a very sad world. Oh maybe not quite a gazillon years. :)

  10. Good one Crossy good one. Unfortunately true.

Water truly can run a long way from the source to find its way down. You could try putting some toilet paper around the base of the toilet, flush a few times and see if the paper wicks up any moisture. Try the same around the shower base. Your rerouted toilet piping should be visible so probably not that.

  11. Don’t know if this will be of help but I had some lose parquet flooring and use white latex glue. Think it was TOA brand. Just poured some where the grout had come out. It slowly disappeared then wipe the excess off with a damp cloth. Did this two or three times and that area has no movement and seem solid. This floor had also been re-sanded and finished.

  12. Split units really refers to the cooling unit and the compressor being separate.

Running two or more indoor units with one outdoor compressor evaporator requires special valves and piping. I believe Mitsubishi has a a unit available in Thailand.
