  1. I,ve yet to come across a true Yorky who hasn,t been brought up on them and if they are cooked and eaten as they are meant to be, they are very tasty.

At my Grans on Sunday lunch it used to Yorkshire puds with gravy for starters. Roast Beef or Lamb veggies , Roast potatoes (done in the meat dish of course) , Yorkshire puds and gravy for main. And Yorkshire pud with Golden Syrup for desert.

    Fantastic.

Sounds like home to me ...did you ever have Yorkshire Pud with a vinegar salad with chopped boiled eggs ???????

Nope. But will try it the next time I fire up the oven.

  2. That's too bad. I was hoping there was a place close enough to at least go diving once a month or even more ofen if possible. Nothing within a 3 hour drive of Bangkok?

Nothing good. There are a couple of other spots.

Try Sattahip th"Hardeep" wreck best done with Ray Divers.

The wreck lies in a channel and if you don't get the tides right it can be a horrific dive for the inexperienced (<150 dives)

K Somyot , the owner of Ray Divers actually makes sure you go in for slack tide.

  4. Went to the Big Mango a few nights back had the burger and fries and Beer Lao. The burger was nicely seasoned and well cooked. I found the fat content a little bit high for my liking, it all seeped into the bun which made it a bit soggy and greasy. French Fries were fine but I do prefer fat chips. Beer Lao was great though :D The bar is fine with good pool tables and great cues. The music was awful, too loud and the usual Thai dance/techno..dissapointing. The service was fine but I didn't appreciate the repetitive screams every time a member of the staff potted a ball.

    Tried Bing Mango last night.

I would agree mainly with your comments.

The patty was great tasting , not sure the fat content was too high or the burger just needed to be left to stand a couple of minutes on a grill before going on the bun.

The buns are terrible mass produced things and unfortunately not toasted.

I would also prefer fat chips to french fries.

    No pickle!

    Beer Lao was great!

Music too lound. Probably to cover the music from other venues . It goes with the terroritory.

One of the girls was hel_l bent on "buy me cola" , the others were ok and friendly.

Another poster talked about the magnificent vistas from the balconys :D:o:D

All in all not a bad burger good be very good with a little fine tuning.

Quality of burger I would go

  6. Ben, for god's sake! Are you practically already at the Airport with a packed suitcase and now it crosses your mind "how will I earn my living in Thailand?"

Be advised: There are some 45 vocatinal "Occupations" that a foreigner is not allowed to engage in. In simple terms: Whatever a Thai-National is beeing considered "he can do that too", you will find it on the list of of what a foreigner is not allowed to engage in!

Work at the Airport? I have passed through the Airport 15 times in the last 5 years: Never seen a foreigner in a working position there. Airport jobs are highly desired and will be given to Thai-Folks that are able to support their Job-Application with a hefty contrbution to the recruiting-staff!

This, by the way, is called corruption. The Thai way of life!

So, your idea of finding a job as a pilot as a freshly certified commercial pilot are practically nil! Because Thais themselves are absolutely capable of fliying airplanes!

So, since you have planned this as only a temporary stay, it would be advisable to inform your Thai Girlfriend, that SHE will (and can) go to work in Thailand and therefore may have to support YOU during this timewise limited stay in Thailand.

This might be only fair, always supposing that you were supporting her in your home country for a certain period of time. If she lends a hand to an agreement like this, you may truly have found a "diamond among the rough".

In any case: Luck to you!

I would love to know what actual knowledge you based your reply on ,if any.

  7. Just an update....Got the wifi hooked up to my mac with True with no problems. Spent 10 minutes on the phone with their customer service and she walked me through how to set up the router (online). After this was done, I have been surfing wirelessly with no problems whatsoever.

When you've got security worked out let me know.

  9. All concerned, we are not debating what program works.

We are here in the "I drink too much" forum because we drink too much. Not because we want to know if AA or DD or ZZ or GG or YY will help us, but because we want to help ourselves.

SO please take your debate elsewhere.

Lets us get along with what we have to do.

ANd we are stopping on the 30th. Whether AA, or DD likes it or not.

I hope TV will open a special place for us ,where we do not have to listen to the above crap.

Sorry meant to cobine your 2 answers.

But maybe the best thing is for people to be correctly advised.

I would guess for the benefit of TV you should get your own sub.

Don't mean to pick on you , you are one of the most lucid posters.

    Cheers

  10. Whatever...exactly...

We can debate what will work until the fat lady sings.

The only thing that will cause someone to stop is the desire to.

    Everything else is a crutch.

    Tucky ,

    I completely sympathise with you.

I sinecerely hope you get over your problems.

But the forum is called "I drink too much"

Not "this is my crutch to help me stop driking"

I drink too much , but I dont call myself an alcaholic.

May be I am in denial.

    Maybe not.

    Hope the best for u.

    Cheers

  11. Why do some people that move /live here (Thailand) seem to find the need to bash, bitch and moan about the same things and constantly complain about some of the customs and lifestyles of the Thai and foreign people that choose to except the lifestyle and live here?

Is it that complainers would be the same (not happy) in any country?

Seems to me the vested people, property/business owners here very seldom complain of such trivial things.

If you do know of a perfect country please let me know.

    Your thoughts?

You've answered your own question, because Thailand's not a perfect country so sometimes complaints are made. Some people just want to naturally moan, and some people like to moan about the moaners and forget to moan about themselves, and some people.......... :o

This topic has been done to death recently, I suggest a search.

The question has been done to death.

But the complainers continue to complain.

So why is it wrong to continue to question them.

    Whats good for the goose................

  12. im looking for a good place to play snooker in bangkok, around sathorn, silom and sukhumvit (no futher than thong lor)

there are a few places near where i live but the table are very poor. is there anywhere with slate beds?

    Most places have slate beds.

Dino is my favourite. But its further than Thonglor.

Bangkok has got ha have more snooker halls than any other city.

I;m sure it should be easy to find.

    Cheers

  13. Hi... This is my first time to Phuket. I'm gonna be there for 6 days in August. Of course I'll be dropping by Phi Phi Island.

Can anyone advise me on how to get to Phi Phi from Phuket?

    The price of travelling there?

    What to do there?

    Is 2 nights stay sufficient?

If I were u I would stay eiither 6 days in Phuket ot 6 days in Phi Phi.

You can chill on the beach in Phi Phi.

6 days isn't really a long time and I would limit the amount of travellinvolved.

    cheers

  14. Are you a thread killer? :o Many times I find a thread and I respond to it, only to find that I am the last person to respond to it, and it was very active before I got there. Bad timing perhaps? :D

Okay, so I wonder what about my post, is that is what it was, killed the thread. Got me thinking, how do you kill a thread? So, for those who kill threads on purpose and those like me who do it by mistake, what are the best ways to kill a thread? :D

Sorry if some one else said this already I didn't wade through all 17 pages.

But TB your a thread killer with over 4000 posts its got to be pretty frightening for the owners of the site :D

    Cheers

  15. I suggest you try IQ Lab. There is one on Silom in the ITF building near Chongnonsi station. There is another location on Ekamai, also not far from the BTS.

As for price, I cannot say. But I am a professional, as are they. IQ Lab uses a top end Durst Sigma film scanner, a machine that costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $15,000 USD.

Additionally, IQ employs people who know a thing or two about image scanning, color, density, and so forth. I have had good luck with the scans there.

More impressive than the scans are the digital prints. They use a Durst Lambda machine, probably the best pro printer on the market. The prints are made in a traditional wet process manner, but the machine uses lasers on the photo paper rather than an enlarger. Basically this is how all minilabs make digital prints, but they use crappy gear and have staff who do not know how to use them. I have been using Lambda for my professional digital output and have been completely impressed. (and I'm picky!)

So net-net, IQ Lab will not be the cheapest around, but they are a real lab.

    Cheers,

    Mark

I go along with IQ Labs being the best.

    Though not cheap.

It all depends why you want to scan and what you will be doing with the scans.

    Cheers

  16. Your budget is tight but IMHO not impossible. Depends a little by what you mean by “green”.

I had a 1 bedroom apartment, 8th floor, corner unit so lots of light, 2 decks, 8th story brand new building and while not looking out on parks it wasn’t blocked from sun or views of the neighborhood. In Saphan Khwai for 15,000. I bet the studio units are around 10,000. Someone suggested Mo Chit which might work along with Saphan Khwai. Also know as Kent Chatuchak. You have the Saphan Khwai and Mo Chit BTS stations walking distance or maybe 10 b motorcycle taxi away. It’s not green belt but lower rise and depending on the soi and view it can be nice. That said it’s a local Thai neighborhood.

There is an interesting little quiet neighborhood near Mo Chit BTS. It’s to the east of the station on Phahonyotin but before Viphawadi. Start on Soi Phahonyotin 18/1 and look around there.

An area you might check out is Kent Bang Sue. If you could work with the MRT instead of BTS go out to the last stop at the Bang Sue station. I looked at a house, again quick moto-taxi away from MRT, quiet soi, all low rise & houses, big yard, something like 5 bedrooms, etc. for 30,000 a month. I have a friend out there who has typical working class Thai studio – small with no kitchen, small bath – very typical. New building, very nice, clean, low rise neighborhood. Nothing wrong with this at all other than being small and again – a Thai neighborhood (for me a plus but each to his own). She pays 3,000. I bet there’s a lot in that area with space and quiet.

For the record I’m in closer – have a 2 bedroom condo in very nice building, 6th floor in 8 floor building, maybe 1 KM in any direction for anything higher and most is 1-2 stories, wonderful quiet and green soi, I look out my window at gardens, dogs playing in big yards, hear birds singing – it’s quiet and peaceful. Nice break in Bangkok. 10 min walk or 10 b ride to BTS. Pay 25,000 a month on a six month lease basis. There are 15,000 b studios if you look around.

My advice on looking – get a motorcycle, maybe ask a taxi how much for a couple of hours, and drive up and down sois that look nice. Stop at all apartment buildings that fit your needs and ask if they have anything. It’s hit and miss a little. Hard to say from the internet. Sometimes the right place, with the right view, on the right location on the soi can be nice and just a little ways a way could be a real pit. But look to the north ends of BTS and MRT.

Thank u all for the reply's...

I should use the word "studio" instead of "apartment".. my bad. So a studio around 10k in a low rise area.. with some trees here and there :D

I think it's the best to follow your tip Valjean... I think i will just hire a taxi driver for a couple of hours and drive around in low rise area's and look around for a studio. :D

The purpose of my stay in bangkok is because my girlfriend lives in bangkok and i want to visit her (long visit) and go to school to learn the thai language. I'm also gonna travel around the country, but with bangkok as my home-base.

Thanks for the tips so far! :o

    Marc,

Where is your GF. Cant she find a place for you?

Look towars then ends of the sky train for cheaper places.

Ekkamai has a fair no. of High rise but a reasonably nice soi. Until Recently I had a sigle house with2 bedrooms , garden and pool there for B25K

Masses of places at your budget if you a studio is ok and some quite nice and new with no more rodents than the most expensive condo.

The guys who say you can't do it haven't a clue.

By the way to the second ? poster , Ekkamai is nowhere near Ram Intra.

Also places refered to apartments in Bangkok tend to be low cost goverment built flats.

    Cheers
