  1. Of course you do not need a O-A to retire in Thailand, you can come on a O visa or even a 30 day exemption and then complete the retirement process in Thailand. No questions are ever asked regarding criminal history and no checks are involved.

The only minor disadvantage is that you have to deal with Thai immigration soon after arrival, if you have a O-A you can wait up to 2 years before you have to get a retirement extension in Thailand.

If you have a income then there is never any need to tie up any money for immigration purposes.

  2. I assume the car is registered in your name, not in your wife/girlfriend's name and not on finance.

You will not need to go to the transport office. There are two forms that you will need to sign and you will provide evidence of identity (passport copy) and copy of proof of address (Tabien Ban, Work Permit or letter from immigration).

Its easier than you might expect.

Its important to note the most of the confusion arises from the need for proof of address (which need not match the address in your car blue book). For Thai's its always a copy of Tabien ban (House Book), obviously most foreigners do not have a house book, which nessesitates either having a work permit or using a letter from immigration or even your consulate if they provide that service.

Broadly speaking the requirements to sell are similar to those required to buy.

If you sign the transfer form and the proxy form (download or get from vehicle office) then there is absolutely no need for you to go to the vehicle office at all.

  3. Its a pity that this driver was not killed otherwise one road menace would have been eliminated. I really hope he would be killed very soon for the sake of public safety.

I expect hateful comments on this forum.. but this really is going too far.

We know nothing about the cause of this accident except what we are told by the media which in Thailand have an appalling record of just making shit up.

You hope he will be killed.... you are sick!

  4. Couple days before New Years. I felt a twinge in a molar. Thought after the long holiday I would see the dentist. Went to bed NYE.....Woke up at 4am with the Mother of all throbbing toothaches....I was lucky to find an open pharmacy. I bought Tramadol and Amoxy with clauvonic acid 1000mg. took two of them a day and used tramadol the first day only as all the pain went away quickly. Root canal when the dentist came back from holiday.

I know this is what she is worried about so just have these two meds on hand.

You bought Tramadol over the counter ?? Where was this..

  5. No single phone is ever going to be right for everyone, but I had a 5S until last year and I upgraded to the 6. I will change "back" to an SE the moment they are on sale in Thailand.

For me (and millions of others) the iPhone 5 / SE is the perfect size. I thought I'd benefit from the bigger screen on the 6 but its just too big for me most of the time (the phone I mean), i am not talking about the 6 plus, just the standard "smaller" 6.

It will be a blessed relief to be back to a smaller phone.

  6. Even terrorists need a holiday, Thailand is popular with people from all walks of life.

Just because someone who is on a list of terrorist suspects enters Thailand, it does not necessarily follow that the reason is terrorism.

Intelligence reports are best kept secret from the public in a country like Thailand, the general public don't know how to in interpret the data and jump to conclusions.

  7. It used to be that every time I went to the bank they would push that scheme to my wife, she was enthusiastic but I was not.

I did the maths, properly. Its not a good deal.

If you can back out, and importantly get your money back, then thats good.

Certainly I know someone who put a lot of money into a similar scheme, verbally the girl in the bank told him that he could cancel and get his money back "anytime", when he went back 2 years later to say that his circumstances had changed and he wanted his money back it was "sorry mister, cannot" and "you no understand". The bank never denied the girl said that, but she was just mistaken. I noticed that a few days later they were telling potential customers the same "anytime mister" story.

Sadly, this is a main branch of one of the biggest banks in Thailand, in Chiang Mai City.

In Thailand it does not matter who makes the mistake, its you that has to pay for it.

  8. Anyone who thinks the embassy is there for you, is fooling themselves. The embassy is there to promote business. That is any Western embassy.

Those who lack knowledge about what the Embassy does and the services it provides for British citizens should open the link and learn.

    https://www.gov.uk/government/world/organisations/british-embassy-bangkok

You know what, thanks for the link, but no thanks... we actually knew where to find that info.

The problem is that there have been so many changes to consular and emabassy services that its just a shadow of its former self.

10 years ago I could renew my passport, get official letters and drop by for advice in the British Consulate in Chiang Mai... those days are long gone and even the embassy in Bangkok does not deal with passports, visas etc and you cannot get in without an appointment.

Meanwhile Americans Canadians and Pakistanis are all served well by local consulates....

  9. I do not understand.. the headline suggests that she was scammed out of the money, but a dog lover would understand how another dog lover may have become too attached to the dog to want to hand it over to someone who will move it to another country.

I cannot see any real deception here.

IF the money was not actually spent on the dog then thats another story.

IF the woman sent money to Thailand on the strength of a photo online then its better that she loses 7000 now and learn from it, it could save her a lot more in the future.

  10. The Scirocco looks great, I would have thought the 1.2 million is a bit expensive, but the really important thing is to get a really good one that has been treated with respect and serviced properly.

I have always loved European cars and I currently run a Volvo turbo so I talk from some experience, though not VW experience.

All the time you are in Bangkok and use specialist dealers you will be Ok, but the value of your car will drop off like a lead balloon so my opinion is to treat this as a long term ownership, or but something Japanese instead.
