  1. Hi

I Dell Inspiron 6000 just ober 18 months old, has slowed to the pace of a snail, hanging, taking 10 mins to start, slow slow slow, and very annoying...about to get a sledgehammer taken to it.

I need all the usual disk clean up,., defrag etc etc.

Someoone told me to get it Backuped and Reformatted, and that will do the trick.

Does anyone know any good shops in Pattaya area they can recommend to this for me, in an efficent way, so no files are lost?

    Thanks

    Gerry

I had that done at Tuk Com Pattaya Tai, 4th floor, in the back. Don't know the name but thay have laptops on the counter, working on them. Only 200 baht and they gave me Win XP and a bunch of software.

  2. It is not clear to me exactly what your situation is but sometimes leaks can be easily fixed by applying asphalt emulsion....it is like tar but is water soluble....it is ugly but if the leak can be stopped by applying a sealer in a place which is not visible then it is often a fast and effective fix. The leak might reappear in a year or two (or it might not) but if it does you can often just go give it another coat of the emulsion in the problem spot.

By the way, I've seen it in small plastic tubs (about one litre) and in one gallon cans (3.785 litres approx.) and it comes in black or in white (although I've never seen just how "white" the "white" is) and it seems like the gallon was about 200 baht.

In using its probably best to remove loose paint but if you can't then a thick coat of the emulsion can often bridge over loose areas and glom it down fairly well.

Thanks all. I will look for the sealer, apply it outside thickly, the outside of the balcony can hardly be seen anyway as it is the 4th floor.

  3. My balcony has some spots where water comes thru in a hard rain. There is a decorative ridge out there that may be causing the problem. Is there a sealer I can use outside over existing emulsion paint? It would be hard to get to and remove the old paint as it is the 4th floor balcony. If I seal inside do I need to wire brush the old paint off first? Thanks.

  4. It will only be eligible for use for one year. After that you will have to get a US licence. Also, you need to check your insurance, as some companies don't recognise international licences.

I went to the License place this morning and they told me I have to go to BKK.

  5. Does anyone know if it is still possible to fly from Bkk direct to Pyongyang? I have tried Googling but cannot seem to find any specific information.

I was in S Korea last March and a travel person (Korean) said you can only enter the North from China by air. Also not all nationalities are allowed in. Maybe check the N Korean govt website?

  6. I'm in a similar situation like you and have had an IDL made from a Thai DL, no problem. You need to go to the motor office on the Rayong highway with your Thai DL and fill in a form. I think it cost about 1000 baht. It has to be made in BKK so take 2-3 weeks before it's ready. Easy peasy.

Thanks Phil. I'll go next week.

  7. I do not have a US motorbike license but I have one here in Thailand. Is it true I can get an international motorbike license using the Thai license, and drive legally in the US? I don't have to get the international in my home country?

    Thanks.

  8. Thank you for the Trip Report.

I know in the "Wet Season" the roads are notorious.

Was there much to see and do along the way ?

This was my second trip on this road in as many months. If you have never traveld overland in Cambodia I recommend the trip. You see lots of authentic Cambodian landscape. Unfortunatly you open yourself up to what I see as a rapid decline in customer service and tourism. Hope this helps.

I took a pickup from Poipet to Battambang, then a boat to SR, very nice, very scenic, close to shore so you can see the people. Battambang is a nice town to spend a night in too.

  9. I'm going to Myanmar next month for 14 days.

I'm looking for suggestions of interesting places to photograph and personal recommendations of non government accommodation.

I'm starting in Mandalay and finishing in Yangoon.

    All suggestions welcome.

    Thanks

Call me weird but I thought photography was illegal in Myanmar? Sure its ok in very toursited areas, and ok at the Mai Sai border as long as you don't bring too much attention to yourself, but depending where you go, it a country under military dictatorship that is paranoid enough to move its capitol overnight in secret.

I'm sure you can take pix in those places you mentioned, but I'm just pointing out that I doubt there will be recommendations for many other interesting places off the normal beaten tracks. If you do find yourself in other locations, I would be careful and somewhat discreet, or at least aware of whos around when you pull out the camera. Good luck getting some great shots though, I hear Yangoon is quiet, peaceful and beautiful.

I took hundreds of photos all over the place. The only military men I saw were at Song Kran, they filled my water squirter for me. From Mandalay take a boat up to Mingun. Also try and get over to Lake Inlay (Inle) for a scenic and relaxing time. In Mandalay go up the hill and around the fort. Bagan (Pagan) has hundreds of temples. The people are wonderful. Have a great time.

  10. Wow thanks, you've really pulled out the stops for me.

I've just been ploughing through Panasonic review sites and you've nudged me towards the more recent DMC-TZ1. It seems to have what I want, particularly the image stabilization is helpful. Its more compact size may suit me more than its larger superzoom peers. I am still a little apprehensive over how powerful the zoom is in practice.

Pix-One on Ratchada have it priced on their website at 11,100. That also suits my budget.

Today is a holiday so I'll go and see what prices are offered in the shops. Might even take the plunge and buy it.

    Cheers

    Briggsy

There is a Photo Fair at BITEC Dec 8 to 11, I also want the Panasonic TZ1 or maybe the PAn. FZ7 (12x optical zoom, ISO, etc)

  11. Doe's anybody know where there is a wireless internet cafe in Pattaya? Also, is wireless internet safe? I pay my bills online and I don't want my account to be accessed by strangers.

    Thanks

Two doors from The Boat restaurant on second road is a place, 2 baht /minute. Don't know about security, I have used it no problem (so far).

  12. By real women I suppose you mean the hordes of impoverished Isaan girls that trawl the streets of pattaya looking for their next victim?.

If any of you idiot farangs would learn the language to a reasonable degreee you would quickly realise that your lovely wife/girlfriend from upcountry is openly talking in Thai about how stupid you are.

The bottom line is that if a girl is willing to go out with an old broken down man its because of money regardless of where you are in the world.

Why don't us fellas have a men only forum ? Not that I'm sexist or anything, but whats good for them- - - - . :o

i agree Simbo , women have been selling themselves since time began so how can we let them have a opinion on this board , if a man is rich it does not matter to women if he looks like a bull dog chewing a wasp hes handsome , if hes broke hes a dirty old man and should be ashamed of him self for trying to get his leg over , women like children should be seen and not heard , and to all the falang women out there have a good christmass and get as much out of your man as you can , because if he comes out here and sees how real women look after there men , your days are numbered

  13. It might actually be your phone - the Nokia IR drivers are pretty crap (you wouldn't happen to be trying to sync with PC Suite would you? It's a very broken piece of software).

Can you connect other IR devices to your laptop ?

I uninstalled Nolia Suite and I am using Oxygen software. My phone works on a friends PC. I have no other IR devices. Thanks.

  14. I have Windows XP on my laptop. I installed an IRDA and driver. I turn my Nokia 6610 to Infrared and I get a connection briefly, tyhen it says my phone has moved out of range or is turned off. The it connects again for a few seconds, and drops again. Keeps doing this by itself. Any ideas? I just went and updated my OS online, the IRDA shows up in Windows as working. Maybe XP needs another fix?
