  1. This subject comes up so regularly I have to conclude that some board members are doing a little back door marketing.

For the record Nirum is indisputably a crap hole. It was built to Thai standards ie: crap. Nothing in the original building worked. Check your condo has been completely re-plumbed and re-wired, most have, otherwise you'll have to do it yourself. Over run with cockroaches and covered in dog and cat shit even walking past it is a health hazard.

If you must live there, probably because you can't afford a tin shack on the beach. rent because the units are home to entire Thai families of 8 plus living in a 38 sqm unit and some of the more 'interesting' foreign residents. At least if you rent you can move if you find yourself next door to a nutter or one moves in.

Finally that whole area is very dangerous after dark.

    Try almost anywhere else.

Wow, I have lived here 3 + years, no roaches, original plumbing and wires. Most Thai residents have shops here or day jobs. A few bar girls live here but that makes it more fun. I think you have never even been in here. Maybe you are a comedian?

  2. I did the search on 'implants' but did not see an answer. I have a bridge with a crown in front of the false tooth and a crown in back of it. The back tooth is a molar, the bridge fell out and the molar is broken and infected. Now taking meds, but doc says I can get a root canal and a pin in the molar to re-attach the bridge. If the tooth can not be saved, extraction and an implant. Does it make sense to just get the implant? Will the root canal tooth last? Thanks. I am in Pattaya by the way in case you recommend a dentist.

  3. I think I used to live at the Nirun Condos, I wish I could remember the name of the condos I lived at but I am pretty sure it was the Nirun Condos. They were within a few blocks of Foodland. They used to have a guard station at the entrance to the parking lot. There were about 4 or 5 restaurants on the first floor and a hair salon. There was an olympic size pool with one restaurant at the edge of the pool. I lived on the 7th floor and had a great view of the pool. I had to 2 large rooms and 2 baths. One bedroom had AC the other did not. The sink drained into the first bathroom drain in the middle of the bathroom, neither had hot water. I added an electric hot water heater to one bath. I really loved living there with my Thai girlfriend and her many bar girl friends that would come over and spend the night. Down the street from the condos were townhomes all of the buildings were at one time owned by a Chinese/Thai man and his business type Thai wife. The one thing I remember most about the condos is the water had to be brought in everyday because of a Thai law that says if all utilities are not present at the condo the loan doesn't have to be paid. So the owner never paid the loan on the condos and nobody could make him because the water line was never hooked up.

If anyone remembers anything about what I have said please let me know if this is in fact the Nirun condos you are all talking about.

BTW, I don't remember any crime at all I always felt safe there. But I did padlock my door.

Does not sound like Nirun. We have 6 buildings with 6 floors, one with 14 floors. City water.

  4. I/d avoid the place if i was you................i've heard bad reports both on TV (drug busts, gambling etc) and word of mouth.

Well, It all depends on the kind of people you get involved with really. If you dont get involved in drugs or gambling then you wont be effected. Ive seen that on the news once or twice in the last 2 years, a drug bust outside Nirun Condo -Definately not a regular thing!!

Better off listening to people with experience with the condo in question, rather than people who have just 'heard'....! I have been living in a lovely condo here for the past 2 years and I wouldnt want to live anywhere else. Friendly neighbours, security, and everything you need in the complex (bars, internet shops, restaurants, laundry, mini-marts ect) Also a good location, very quiet around here, and Id say most of the residents here are foreigners. 2 clean swimming pools, delivery food service.. I could go on and on!

Go for it!! Prices start at 300,000 for the basic smaller condo's, up to about 800,000 for something luxury and larger.

    Hope this helps :)

I have lived here for over 3 years, and I agree with you. It is very safe here, lots of shops so in the rainy season you never need to go outside. The gambling is among Thais, not a real problem. Drug bust? I remember one a long time ago. No break-ins or muggings. People are friendly.

  5. Pattaya dentists, like other businesses here, follow cartel-like price fixing. That is clear from the fact that they all charge about the same prices, in nice round numbers. And those prices are relatively too high, especially for farangs.

Now, the price at a PTY clinic for teeth cleaning supposedly starts at 400 baht. I take great care of my teeth, and they hardly need a 6-month cleaning, so that's what I should pay. Yet inevitably, after a quick routine cleaning, I'm charged 700-800 baht. (Forget BP or PI hospital prices, which reach 1,200 with a lot of little tacked-on charges: the cotton, the water, the needle, mileage on the drill bit, laundering the face covering, whatever).

This kind of constant sharp pricing in PTY is wearing and I like to try to beat it whenever possible.

Which I did in this case. Banglamung Hospital has got a dental clinic, so I got my teeth cleaned there for B280 and got three small cosmetic fillings for B600. The quality of the work was as good I've gotten in a clinic. The only downside is that you have to get there early, about 8:00 AM, as they only take 40 patients per day, and it must be on a weekday; and you'll probably wait about 2 hours. I spent my 2 hours, each time, reading a book and listening to my MP3 player.

To use a Thai public hospital such as Banglamung, it really, really helps to speak basic Thai or go w/ a Thai friend, but you could probably survive w/o either if you're well-mannered, tolerant, and patient, and maybe have phrase book to show phrases in Thai. All my experiences at Thai public hospitals have been pleasant, except for the getting up early and waiting. Most doctors do have a smattering of English.

Now, as a recent thread attests, many of our besotted PTY punters will be highly concerned about the cuteness of the dentist. We need a site for comparing photos, do we not? I can tell you that I had a root canal done at St Louis (BKK) by a HOT young thing and not only did she overcharge but did lousy work to boot. An incompetent dentist can do a helluva lot of damage. So I don't give a shit what a dentist, or a surgeon, looks like. But at Banglamung--sorry, guys (and lesbians I guess)--I just couldn't see much behind the dental masks and head coverings, though the "fillings" lady, a Chula grad, had very nice eyes. If those aren't good enough for you, then you'll just need to drool elsewhere (pun intended) and pay 3-4 times more for said drooling. What about fixating on some young female patients out in the waiting room? The public hospitals usually have large crowded waiting rooms, so there's bound to be one or two there.

Anyway--take THAT, overpriced Pattaya private dental clinics and hospitals! :)

Try Pattaya Dentist 32/14 SOuth Rd, I go there. Good cleaning 500 baht. 038-424222

  6. I have the symptoms of tennis elbow and I have been taking Ibuprofin 600mg twice a day for a month. Will this cure the problem or just take the pain away temporarily? Can I exercise or ride a bike now? The pain is much less since I stopped using the mouse with my right hand. When I take a walk the elbow gets stiff unless I keep moving it around. THANKS.

  7. I found a thai licence thread on this website but it wasn't clear on something. If my one year licence expires, is it OK for several months to pass before applying for my five year licence? If I don't renew on the day of expiry, do I have to start again with the one year version? It expires next week but I'm out of the country until January.

A while back I read that you can't renew your license until after it has expired! Not sure if this is true - seems strange.

My wife's license was expired when she renewed hers, and she was told at the land transport office that you have up to 3 months after the expiry date to renew without starting all over again (e.g. take the tests again and get a 1 year license).

My bike and car licenses expired while I was away, about 1 month over, I was still able to get the 5 year.

  8. Call 1337, anyone with noise pollution problems is urged to do so as per article in Pattaya Mail a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks I'll try it. I worry mostly about the Thais who live here and have to get up early for work, and kids for school.

  9. I live 2 soi's away from Shagwells, and I live about 200m down the soi from Soi Arunothai, and I can also hear the loud music coming from there sometimes very late at night.. Even though my place is quite a distance away!

I feel sorry for those who live just behind the place.

It's hard to feel sorry for anyone who moved straight into or near a busy, loud bar district and then complains about the noise.

Well you are correct, but I moved here 2 years ago before the market was there, before any bars opened. Don't assume!!!

  10. What can you expect nowdays from the Young English Element,a few bottles of Heineken, and a sniff of the barmaids apron, and they think they own the place. Lock them up,deport them, and let me hear them shout for ''Human Rights'' then. :D

Good riddance too bad rubbish I say.

SweetChariot happened to mention they were American :o

I guess he can tell nationality by looking? The worst are Brits ,without a doubt.

  11. Can we have a bit of a whip-around for the OP. I'll throw in 10 baht. I could talk to my employers and see if we can contribute from our Community Development Fund; perhaps the OP would like to PM me for an application form.

I'm sure if we all worked hard and adopted the spirit of charity, we could overcome this hardship somehow.

Why are there so many a**holes on this forum? I want to know if I might have an electrical problem, not a cah flow problem.

  12. Hi

I Dell Inspiron 6000 just ober 18 months old, has slowed to the pace of a snail, hanging, taking 10 mins to start, slow slow slow, and very annoying...about to get a sledgehammer taken to it.

I need all the usual disk clean up,., defrag etc etc.

Someoone told me to get it Backuped and Reformatted, and that will do the trick.

Does anyone know any good shops in Pattaya area they can recommend to this for me, in an efficent way, so no files are lost?

    Thanks

    Gerry

I have said this before and will say it again, unless you have a fundamental problem with your system a reformat and install is a waste of time, may i suggest you uninstall all programs that you have the disks for etc, and I mean everything right down to the basic windows just as though you have just installed the OS (which is what you are thinking of doing anyway) then use a REG cleaner - defrag your hard disk then see how your speed is, it should be back to clean install speeds or slightly slower due to service pack updates etc

there is no need to format and reinstall your OS the above will do the same and a lot less hassle

Thats would be technicall too complicated for me... :o knowing me and PCs, I d mess it up and loose imporant files.

I was sort of hoping to avoid the Tucom experience, as I always get sold something which does not do as it is supposed to, or the misunderstandings, drive me nuts.

There was an UK guy...had an IT business beside Pattaya Mail on Suchkmvit, who did a good job before, ok was more expensive, but I got extactly what I need done...no confusion. But I looked other day, and he either is closed or moved somewhere...Richard was his name....anyone know if he is still in business in new location in Pattaya?

I don't know him but you may want to post in the Pattaya forum. Near Foodland on Pattaya Klang is a computer center, PCD I think. The place in Tuk com is Pattaya 2 U, never a hard sell, they speak computer English ok.
