I notice the only mention of fares in the article is about "approving" the current (ridiculously overpriced) fares, so that the lazy cab drivers can continue to sit in one spot and work as infrequently as possible to afford their BMW taxis.
Also not mentioned in the article is the fact that the "illegal taxis" not only overcharge people, they threaten the lives of any taxi meter that would otherwise be willing to come and pick up passengers near their "turf" for a metered ride.
What a load of crap - I can't even believe these people think this is helping their image somehow. They really have no grasp on reality.

And I was led to believe New Zealand hillbillies just had sex with sheep...

I can't speak for Europe, but he's basically just repeating the same things poor people in the US say all the time. Who needs a job, when the government will just take someone else's money and give it to me for sitting here on my butt.

The laws of Malaysia are inhuman and inacceptable.
So don't go there. It's their country, their views, their laws and legal system. We all need to be aware of the laws of any country we go to and the punishments for offences. This guy new the risks, got caught and may pay the ultimate price. I've lived in countries with much more oppresive and draconian laws (to me) than Malaysia - but that was my choice and I obeyed the laws whilst there.
Yes it's their laws - but we can still have a discussion about what we feel about that law can't we? Otherwise we should just all throw our hands up in the air and not question anything again I suppose...

Does it . Most folk in the civilized world like a drink now and then, hmmmmmmmm, strange how they do not all crave a joint eh.The fact that alcohol and tobacco are completely legal in most places and marijuana gets someone the death penalty - just goes to show how screwed up the "war on drugs" really is.
They don't "all" crave tobacco and alcohol, either, but that seems kind of irrelevant. Obviously most people avoid marijuana because it is illegal and has a stigma attached to it - but their dislike typically has nothing to do with not liking the marijuana experience. There are very few drugs that are as harmless as marijuana, yet it seems to be one of the most hated. It really is interesting. For the record, I don't even smoke it... but I know plenty of people that do and live completely functional lives, run their own businesses, etc. I have known people who's lives have been ruined by alcohol however...

I find it amusing how both straight and gay guys want to "disown" anyone who sleeps with ladyboys as not one of their own. However, having been friends with a number of ladyboys, I find that the guys they usually attract consider themselves "straight". And according to the rules that straight people have laid out for us (us being homosexuals), we are not supposed to question anyone's sexuality if they call themself straight.
It's interesting though how a gay boy can be super fem, basically acting like a woman but still wearing boys clothing, and get lots of gay bfs. But as soon as they put on a wig and a dress - gay boys are turned off like a light switch!

Didn't that woman already "guarantee" there would be NO flooding this year? I'm so confused...

These little kids have no business driving motorbikes... these stories are so common they usually don't even make the news. Such a waste of a life.

Meanwhile, in Thailand, the police are still using two-way radios with 5 foot antennas and people are tossed into the back of pick-up trucks labelled "ambulance" ...

There are multiple people killed in Chicago everyday, on average. And I'll tell you what, if you tick off a drug dealer you're probably gonna be next in most major cities. Still a sad story though.

"The alms-offering activity chaired by the prime minister later went on as scheduled"
Hmm... maybe would've been nice to have changed her PR opportunity of offering alms into a time to show sympathy for someone who lost their life in front of her instead of going on like nothing happened?

Uphold the interests of the country before their own (thai politicians) you must be joking never.
Politicians in America certainly aren't any better these days... it's all about power and getting re-elected... if something good happens to someone as a result, it was an accident.

I'd be so embarrassed to wear a police uniform in Thailand.

My Thai friends' idea of dieting seems to be seeing how long they can go without eating until they are just about to pass-out, then finally agreeing to have dinner with you but telling you how fat they are the entire time. Meanwhile, for those of us that are over 50kg...

LoL Thailand is freaking hilarious, that's about all I can say anymore. Don't like one decision - take it to the court. Don't like the court's answer - say the court needs to be dissolved. It's just beyond comprehension...

Commander Chonasit urged all people in Phuket to be wary of such thieves.
Is he talking about the Indonesians or the police officer.

"The last time a major reward was offered in a murder case on the island, during the July 2010 manhunt for American Ronald Fanelli, the 50,000 baht reward money was divided up among the police investigators who worked on the successful investigation."
I don't think the reporter even realizes how pathetic that is...

I've heard many Thais, and even Filipinos resident in Bangkok, calling the store 'Ih-kia' or 'Icky' rather than 'Ikea'. I know it sounds vaguely like the impolite 'I-hia' in Thai but even still ... it's name is Ikea.
I don't roll on the floor or look shocked when a Thai tells me his or her name is Poo or even Poo-Poo, or when someone says his name is Kant or Gunt. You know you've been here too long when you consider Supaporn, Titiporn and Wichaporn to be perfectly normal names like Mary, Jane and Rachel.
Right on!

Funny that Thai companies actually have to admit guilt when they do something wrong OUTSIDE of Thailand =P
