  1. Well, my two pennies worth.

Have lived in Surat Thani for 7 years and my wife is originally from NST but has lived in Surat for all her life.

The opinion of people from Surat Thani is that those from NST are very dangerous. Why? Well it takes a lot less to piss of a person from NST to the extent that they would kill you.

Also, NST is THE place to recruit a hitman, should you be in need of one, apparently. The going rate is approx 30k - 50k depending on who you know or who you talk to.

And for the benefit of this thread, can we please correct 'dum' to 'dam'. The corrent pronunciation of black in Thai is 'ดัม / dam' or 'สี ดัม / see dam'.

As far as Yala, Naratiwat and Songkhla and other southern border provinces are concerned, you are probably right, I would have thought the murder rates there a lot higher. Although, these murders are almost exclusively religiously motivated. Not a regional thing.

After living for a while, and having had quite a few run ins with locals and road rage (my biggest failing) instances, I am still alive.

I know a lot of people from Surat and NST and they are wonderful people.

I have seen a few people killed here, acidentally and execution style, stopped at traffic lights, but hey this is Thailand.

  2. Why would it worry you unless you intend to break the law....

He took a bottle of whiskey from a hotel bar....he could have asked the receptionist to get him something to drink, He only offered to pay for it when he got caught...didnt have funds to pay for it on him...made no arrangement to pay prior to being caught....GUILTY

There is no potential for me to be a jailbird on this one...Dont take without asking...

And how would you feel if you were the victim of mistaken identity and despite your increasingly desperate protestations of innocence you were still consigned to 3 years of hel_l for nicking 70cl of distilled grain?

Draconian punishment disproportionate to the crime committed is generally the hallmark of any deficient society and in its occasionally barbaric penal system the Thai must rank as positively medieval.

To accept such injustice without demur on the grounds of general principle, guilt is all, is quite abhorrent behaviour in any civilized person's book and clearly militates against progress.

But perhaps the Antipodean experience is so ingrained in your psyche that when the subject of cruel punishment is raised you can only express your deepest gratitude? :D

    -----------

I normally just stay very quiet and read through the posts.

This thread however and several posts therein are far too tempting to stay away.

the gent, "...Draconian punishment disproportionate to the crime committed is generally the hallmark of any deficient society..."

If you sincerely view LOS in an inferior and deficient light, if you are here, why are you here?

Remove yourself from this "Draconian" country and visit Holland for example, you can smoke drugs, have sex with prostitues and possibly stab waiters and still be on the right side of the law.

If you're not in LOS then why are you posting on a Thailand ex-pat forum?

This is Thailand, accept it or stop complaining about it.

And for the love of God man, please put the thesaurus away.

Yes I can understand what you are trying to say, but by writing it in such a ridiculous fashion you just come across as extremely idiotic, as opposed to the omniscient way you probably view yourself.

    ------

I appreciate the original OP's plight and intent. He did not try to force this down our throats, only make us aware of the situation. There's nothing wrong with doing this.

There's also nothing wrong helping farangs doing time, though many people would disagree with you.

One day, due to extremely unfortunate circumstances (NOT those described in the OP) it could be you (or me) staying at the King's pleasure. You'd probably want someone to visit you then.

    ------

I completely agree with "accidental" or "absent minded" stealing being possible.

I have to also agree that doing this in a King Power duty free shop would be a hard thing to achieve unless you were a.) drunk (careful with the waiters), b.) senile or c.) senile and drunk.

  3. Hi , hopefully a straight forward question...

I am going to be sending some money from the UK to my girlfriend's Bangkok Bank account.

Sending by bank transfer and sending GBP.

What exchange rate should I hope to get.

I notice that worldwide exchange rates (XE.com, Forex) differ from the Bank of Thailand's rate.

I understand that the bank receive the GBP and convert them.

Will I get 64 Baht to the pound or 69?

Many thanks in advance for your replies!

  4. Hi I wondered if anyone would be able to help me.

I have a Bangkok Bank account, but never applied for the iBualuang. I am thinking about applying for the service, but ideally wanted to know in advance what the system is like when it comes to sending money overseas FROM Thailand.

On the bbl.co.th homepage, when looking at the features for iBualuang, it clearly states that you can transfer money overseas using iBualuang. Can anyone confirm that they have tried this and it works. They offer links to screenshots on the page, but none of them actually work.

Another question I have. If anyone resides in Southern Thailand, have they tried sending money overseas (Wire Transfer). I have been told that many branches of BBL do not have a foreign remittance service. Is this true?

I would like to know as all of this information will prove very helpful in the next few days.

    Many Thanks
