  1. I use only raw and process in Lightroom. If I want quick results, the standard import settings in Lightroom gives me already a useable quality in 95% of the cases, comparable to In-Camera JPG. I just choose the ones I want to print or export, and ready. Does not take any longer than using jpg and say AseeDsee. But if I want the best Quality, I play with the Lightroom settings and/or export to Photoshop, and I have the superior Quality that raw delivers.

I can't see any use for jpg at all, when you follow this Workflow.

  2. there are pockets/areas in the UK where properties are extreme depending on location, there are also areas where 150-200k pounds would not be unusual for a detached house/bungalow, sorry but I hold fast with my statement, your example of 7million baht should be more like 4-5 million, you are doing exactly what I said in my original post............comparing with back home prices on the wrong end of the scale :) but please feel free to hand your well earned nest egg over to something you will never own and was built for a fraction of what you paid for it lol

So you are saying that, because some brackwater areas in the sticks in the USA have bungalows for 7 - 11 Million Baht, and because Thailand has to be much cheaper than that, you should get a nice 3 Bedroom House with Pool and imported furniture onthe beachfront of one of Thailand's most popular resort towns for 3 Million Baht? Or else it's a scam?

Wasn't that what you were trying to say?

    Dream on, forever!

  3. Bought into a Condo development early 2004, and sold it just before completion, with only about the half purchase price paid up by me. Profit close to a million.

Sorry to the threadstarter, but can't complain.

  4. Correct me if I am wrong, but I cant remember ever having heard of any of these "Security" measures at Airports having prevented a real threat yet.

But real threat happens (sparsely, but still) in air.

So, what does that tell us?

For me it is clear, and in line with the information that was made available on the above-mentioned TV series:

A determined suicide terrorist will always be able to create havoc, unless he or she is stupid. No matter what technology we use to prevent this, he or she will always find a loophole. More technology does not lead to more security, it just leads to less of that what those who order to use this technology falsely proclaim to protect: Freedom.

  5. Fotofile MBK, Capa Fortune Town 2nd Floor. And the store in the first small Soi left off Charown Krung when coming from Saphan Taksin BTS station, to name a few.

Thanks Sunny Valentine, I found the filters i was looking for at capa at fortune, though they don't have a big selection of brands and filters type, I still can't find some. Fotofile has much less, the employee answered me "we have only uv, polarizer".

In my view, the only filters

that make sense in Digital Photography are Polarizers, Neutral Grey, and Graduated Grey. All others are obsolete, as it is easier and more flexible to produce the effect in Photoshop.

And Fotofile, you should go to the shops on 2nd and / or 5th floor.

  6. Make sure the location settings in Preferences - Directories match the location you intend to use. It is not enough to cjust change the My Documents location, as Microtorrent keeps its own folder information.

The weirdest thing is it's only happening when he moves the files to his external. The location of the files should have no bearing whatsoever on the tracker. Problems usually occur when the client can't find the source files of the torrent. The only thing I can suggest is:

Move all the folders across to a directory on your external

    Stop all your torrents

Right-click each one and select advanced/set download location

Navigate to the appropriate folder and select it

    Repeat for each torrent

I'm not doing that! :) There's hundreds of them!! :D

I didn't transfer my files in the first place, I just changed my completed DL directory to my external(for all new torrents added) and after doing so it was only randomly half of my torrents that were having - supposedly - tracker issues

Thanks for your suggestions too MKAsok, I do appreciate your time :D

  7. Since I tried my first Eneloops about two Years ago, I don't bother with anything else.

You get them at around 450 Baht for 4, and they work with any charger, although I suggest you get a charger with 4 individually controlled slots. Bought my Powerex Xharger for I think 2700 Baht at Fortune Town, at a shop right next to Capa Foto on 2nd floor.

The greatest advantage with Eneloops is that they hardly discharge at all. Even afte 6 month they are still full. They are rated 2000 MA but sem to last longe rand get better results than any of the 2600 or 2800 MA brands I tried before.

  8. When buying my 7D at Capa. the owner was straight forward (after I asked him about warranty). It came with Japanese Handbook, but the manual is downloadable, so no big deal. I printed it out on A4, much easier to read than the microformat Canon is giving.

As said, at time of purchase I paid about 9000 Baht less than the published Fotofile price, and about 6000 less than the best offer for Thailand Warranty I could find.

As I did some shopping at Capa before, and was always positively surprised about their service and aftersales policy, I decided to risk it. So far so good.

  9. The best price would be through Capa Digi, you can google their number....

But it is worth mentioning that most of the shops selling SLR gear at muh discounted ppices do sell direct Imports from Japan or Singapore or Hongkong, with no Thailand Warranty. In case of trouble you have to deal with the buyer, which in case of Capa should be ok, as long as you dont mind waiting 1 month or more for them to send the gear abroad for repair and have it returned ....

I bought my 7D at Capa for about 6000 Baht cheaper than elsewhere at that time, but I am aware there is a risk involved. So far no problems.

  10. BP-511A compatible with BP-511 has more capacity at 7.4V1390mAh than older BP-511 at 7.4V1100mAh.

I've read some copies last only a year while others have problem with indicator lamp when used with genuine charger.

Happens once in a while, but at least for me that also happened with Originals. Solution: Take it off the charger, and plug it in again.

I have some cheap copies from Fotofile (1800 mAh) running for more than two Years without problems. My last Original that I received 1 1/2 Years ago with the purchase of the 40D is now ready to be disposed. I also had a stud copy that did not last more than 6 month. But: On average, you get 3 copies for the price of one Original. If one out of 5 or 6 is bad, no big deal.

I am almost certain the Batteries were 511A at Fotofile, I did not check, as I did not intend to buy Originals.

The copies thye sell (for 800 Baht) are usually good. It all depends not on the brand, but the charge of sells they buy on the spot market. Same with Canon. They have similar sources, and please don't tell a Canon user that this company excels in QC! So, in case of batteries, it is a lottery, but the rates are in your advantage with no names.

I'm thinking of buying Kenko's batteries compatible with BP-511/A with even more capacity than genuine BP-511A, at 1500mAh. Not sure if they're available in Thailand but will buy them from amazon in Japan anyway at 4,580 yen compared to 6,235 yen for BP-511A. How much was BP-511 (not A?) at Fotofile anyway? BP-511 is discontinued and supposed to be very old.

Hi Khutan, while I thank you much for your info, I've already been there, if you are talking about the main Canon HQ at that Bangkok City Tower or what it's called, pretty sure it's same one. If you read up a few posts from this one you should see my experience. Anyhow, Canon sucks concerning quality after service. They don't listen to customers, and they allow so called Regional Headquarters to operate their own way (i.e. "Thailand style"). Not a week goes by I don't think of the Nikon D90 and dumping my 400D setup.

My experience with Canon service in Thailand hasn't been so negative aside from their lack of inventory for accessories (including spare battery, lens and body cap). In my experience the service quality is usually better when manufacturer have regional presence to distribute and service products than when they entrust local distributor to look after customers which in the case of Nikon happens to be so as far as cameras are concerned.

  11. The Canon Service Centre is in the building on the corner of Sathorn and Naratiwas Rd. If you get off at BTS Chong Nonsi it is the building on the far left corner of the intersection, maybe 100 meters from the BTS. You can order all the stuff from them.

As to the guy who keeps recommending I get "compatible" copies: NO THANK YOU.

I have seen original Canon BP 511 at Fotofile ground floor last week.

And I still wonder why you insist on overpriced so-called "Originals"?

I have had a total of 4 Canon DSLRs in the last 6 or so Years, and went through probably more than a dozen Batteries, Originals as well as copies. My personal experience: The copies are stronger, last longer. And never mind if Original or not, after about 3 Years they need to be replaced.

  12. Well, you can get gray import for 15000 or slightly less, thats true. Mine was bought with regular Thailand warranty.

Mind you also that Lenses tend to keep their value much more than most other articles, just have a look at prices realized at Ebay, for lenses. On average over 80% in good condition, regardless of the age.

Anyway, I am (somewhat) open to offers .....

  13. Hi all!

I recently did some upgrades on my Equipment, and now have severl items that I don't need anymore, therefore looking to sell.

I live in Pattaya, but go to Bangkok once or twice a month for several days, so a meeting can be arranged where you can look at and test the equipment.

    I have to offer:

    * Canon EF 70-300 1:45-5.6 DO USM

An incredible small lens for the range, with excellent results in the range of 70-200, and still very good at 300 mm when stepped down a bit.

My price: Bt. 30000. Current price (Fotofile): 47000

Condition: About 4 Years old, very well kept, no visible scratches or fungus. Comes with both Caps and Original Canon Lens Shade.

    * Canon EF-S 60 1:2.8 Macro USM

Bought a little over 1 Year ago. Super sharp, excellent performance. Attention: EF-S Lenses only fit Canon Cameras with 1.6 crop sensor, not usable on 1 or 5 Models!

Excellent Condition, rarely used (I realized Macro does not do it for me ...). Comes with both Caps.

My Price: Bt. 12500. Current price (Fotofile): 17500.

    * Lensbaby 3G. 50 mm 2.0

Tilt-and-bend-and-be-creative Lens, with Canon EF Bayonet.

Excellent Condition. Bought 2 Years ago.

    Now replaced with Lensbaby Composer.

My price: Bt. 5000. Used to sell in Thailand for over 10000 Baht, have seen it recently for about 7500 Baht in shops in Bangkok.

Comes with both Caps, and 2.8 to 16 F-stop rings plus magnetic tool.

    * Canon Flash 420 EX

Slightly older flash, but fully compatible with the Canon Speedlite system. GN 42, fully TTL2 compatible. Works also as slave with current master flashes (580EX, 580EXII, 550EX, SB E2, Canon 7D).

About 6 Years old, but not often used as I bought a 550 EX shortly after.

    My Price: Bt. 4500

Comes with 3 Original Stofen Diffusers (White, Yellow, Green).

    * Opteka RL 500 Macro Ring Flash for Canon.

The RL-500 Macro Flash is ideal for photographing subjects in fine detail when the shadowless mode is used, and is extremely effective for scientific and medical applications. Dual flash tubes can fire simultaneously or separately. Using only one flashtube creates modeling, which can give a three-dimensional feeling to the subject. The flash features a guide number of 18 w/ISO 100. The Modeling Flash function makes it possible to check for reflections and shadows before actually taking the flash picture. High Speed Synchro and Exposure compensation functions are also available for advanced flash photography. 52mm and 58mm adapter rings are included with the flash. 55mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm and 77mm adapters are sold separately. Canon E-TTL Compatible.

About One Year old, not much used.

My Price: Bt. 4000. Current price (Fotofile): 6900

So, anyone interested, please contact me via PM.

I think the prices I ask for are realistic, but not edged in stone .....

  14. With the Canon ETTL flash system in P mode the camera assumes you want the flash to dominate the exposure. So the shutter speed is chosen from between 1/60 to 1/250, and the aperture and flash power are set to have the flash part of the exposure dominate the picture. Depending on available light you might see very dark backgrounds.

In A (and S) modes the camera and flash attempts to provide a balance between flash exposure and available light. In case you want the flash part to dominate the picture, you can adjust the flash exposure on Camera. Putting this to (+) will shift the balance towards the flash, the other way round the overall light will be dominating.

This is the mode for shadow fills, and such.

In "M" mode you set the overall exposure by choosing the Aperture and Shutter speed, and then the flash kicks in, and fills the shadows (or more) automatically. Again, you can adjust with Flash Compensation here.

You can also turn off the TTL automatic and use M mode with manual flash power. That gives you the most options to tune the picture as you see fit.

    Hope that helps!

  15. Don't know about Notebooks or computer parts, but I recently imported several foto equipment, and the tax collected by FedEx or UPS was reasonable.

Last example: Lens, plus Tripod accessories (Adorama): Merchandise price: 396 $, freight 82 $, total customs and VAT: 1600 Baht. delivered in 72 hours.

  16. Hehe. All good advice, but I am well aware of what you say. Disclosure : I have been a software engineer for over 30 years!

As I have said very clearly True *kill* the internet connection to your building in Nonthaburi if you use torrents. I am not talking about no torrent traffic, or torrent throttling, I am saying that web surfing, mail, the whole kit and caboodle is cut, and only the ADSL base signal remains.

I need to investigate more and see if it's linked specifically to trackers, torrent clients and commonly used ports or not and what True are doing exactly. Once I have done that I will tackle them directly, and if necessary put a web site up about it / contact various NewsPapers. The problem on their side is that I assume they are doing this to pay lip service to copyright holders requests. The problem for them (and the effect on us) is that we use it as both an inter-office / home-office and personal file transfer tool and they are cutting off a connection that is using torrents for legal purposes.

I have to wonder if True are testing it in certain non-critical areas for later roll out Nationwide...

Your problem as it sounds could well be one of your router. Some routers (especially older Zyxel models) have problems with maintaining open and half-open connections. There is a firmware bug that leads to closeing connections (within the torrent application) not being recognized, and therefore the buffers for open connection overflow after a certain (sometimes very short) time. A Hard reset (turning the router on and off) usually does it.

Try a different router, and see if it has the same behavior.

I seriously doubt that True (or any other Thai ISP) has the knowledge and expertise to really throttle or prevent torrent activity on their net. They might want to do it, but they can't. If they could, they could also make their lines and accounts work ....
