  1. First computer I tried to download SP3 on wouldn't complete the download, maybe the servers were overloaded as it was downloading very slowly. Tried another computer and it went okay. Downloaded the file to burn to CD (300MB+). First copy I burned was deemed corrupt but the second CD worked perfectly on two computers. All computers working so far so good. On the internet people were reporting problems but a number of those were problems caused by having a pre-installed system on brands like Compaq who Microsoft were blaming, something about including files for both Intel and AMD on Intel CPU computers. Windows Update wasn't working for some people but I used it after installing SP3 without problems.

  2. I've been there in the past year. Worth a visit, earthquake effects weren't noticable to me but then I wasn't really looking. It's a good place to use as a base to see some of the surrounding areas. Market in the main street (Malioboro) has lots of cheap stuff, makes Thailand seem expensive but the quality isn't as good. The local market with all the animals is interesting but if you're an animal rights fan then best not to go as you will not be impressed. People were friendly, really didn't have anyone hassle me or try to rip me off apart from being assailed by people selling stuff at Borobodur but then I think I was the only foreigner there on a quiet day. I didn't notice any hostility at all towards foreigners, quite the opposite, always felt safe despite all the warnings out there about Indonesia.

  3. http://www.bangkokpost.com/Database/14May2008_data006.php

"Officers from the Ecotec division of the Royal Thai Police recently carried out raids at IT malls across the capital, as part of the continued fight against counterfeit and unlicensed software in Thailand.

Although piracy is typically associated with the selling of counterfeit products such as copied CDs or DVDs, it is now also alarmingly common for hardware to be pre-installed with unlicensed software before it is sold to an end-user, according to police.

A survey commissioned by Microsoft last year revealed that 97 per cent of system builders in major IT malls in Bangkok are guilty of "hard disk loading"- the practice of installing pirated or unlicensed software on a PC. At the time of the survey, only three per cent of software vendors at Panthip Plaza, Zeer Rangsit Mall and Fortune Mall offered PCs pre-installed with genuine Microsoft products."

Probably only 3% partly because the manufacturers of computers sold in Thailand don't always load Windows themselves unlike in the US where most PCs, even the cheap ones come with Windows pre installed. Bought a computer as I'm sure others have from a well known store recently and I have to say the pirated software installed was an excellent selection, lots of anti-virus and spyware protection, much better than what you get on a legitimate operating system. :o I was surprised when Windows update worked with it. If it had been partitioned the way I wanted then I may have kept it but I had a genuine license so replaced with that instead.

  4. Other than notebooks I've put together my own computers for years but if you're only after something cheap as tut is then it's going to be easier to buy a brandname like HP, Acer, Lenovo etc. Once you start getting someone to build a computer for you they start giving you too many options and before you know it that cheap computer is no longer cheap. Only thing you're probably going to want to upgrade is the memory or hard disk and it shouldn't be a problem with most brands, Dell I think is the brand people can have problems upgrading. Anyone who asks me for help buying a cheap computer gets directed to the budget models from the manufacturers listed above. Anything goes wrong then I know they have after sales service available.

  5. I think he means 2 USB ports on the front. Be very surprising if there were not at least another 4 USB ports at the back.

Tescos are probably not going to be much help if you need to ask some questions unless you get lucky and find a sales person who does know something about computers other than "this has a DVD burner". If you've ever bought a tv or dvd player from Tesco or BigC then you will know what I mean. If it's a basic computer under 20,000 then the only genuine operating system you will get is Linux or DOS. See if you have an IT City shop nearby and look there.

One thing to be careful of when buying from places like Tesco is the models they have on sale are not always the current version. An 80Gb hard drive and 512MB RAM suggests it could be an older model. Most cheap notebooks now come with a 160Gb HD and 1GB RAM so I'd expect at least the same for a low priced desktop. Google the model # before you buy.

  6. Check the website of the motherboard you're using and see what they list for compatible RAM. Not all RAM works with all motherboards. Could be a voltage issue e.g. the motherboard can only supply 1.8v but your RAM requires something higher. You may be able to adjust in BIOS or you may not. If you bought it from eBay then is it some generic brand? Sticking to the big brands like Kingston, Corsair etc. is usually safe but even for them you should check their websites where you can enter your motherboard details to see what they guarantee to work. With RAM so cheap do you really save much by buying from eBay anymore? Looking for some notebook RAM the other day and 2GB of DDR2 Kingston was only 1300 baht in Fortune.

  7. Samsung have a history of not making available their current highest capacity drives for Thailand. When 250GB was the largest size all you could find for a long time was the 80GB size, now that it's 1TB, 500GB is the largest size they market locally unless you can find someone bringing in the 1TB size from Singapore privately. If you want 1TB then you're most likely going to have to settle for one made in Thailand e.g. Western Digital, Seagate or Hitachi, not an import. Maybe Samsung have given up on the hard disk market in Thailand as WD and Seagate have the lions share of the Thai market. Most shops don't even sell Samsung drives anymore. I was reading customer reviews about the 1TB Samsungs the other day and a lot of people are experiencing problems with them but hard to say if the problems are with the disk or in the way people are using them. Without local support then I'd be wary of the 1TB size until there is, otherwise I'd get one myself next time I'm in Singapore or Hong Kong.

  8. Seems like you need to reboot, turn off SR, reboot and enable it again to kick start it. Rreasons it won't restore could be that to do so will damage your system e.g. you have a virus or problems with norton. Just enter the message into a search engine and you can get some more detail. I had problems with a scanner, unplugged it and SR wouldn't restore. When I plugged it back in again it worked but the virus reason or Norton is what others suggest.

  9. Malaysian copies are normally what you find in Pantip, not Chinese. In plastic sleeve not boxed sell for 80-100 baht per disk. In Jakarta you pay only 5-6000IR per disk for tv series but they may have 5 or 6 shows on one disk compared to only 3 on the Malaysian version of the same show however the quality is still good unless you intend to play on a high end tv.

  10. nohave, despite what you might read many people manage to fly on Air Asia without too many problems. Most people with complaints haven't read the conditions and either turn up late at the airport, over the luggage limits or want to change their ticket without penalty. If you avoid those scenarios the chances of you having a non eventful flight are high so long as you don't expect to be waited on hand and foot. A lot of what you read about Air Asia reminds me of comments about Asia Rooms. People who book with a bit of time to spare and don't make changes don't have many problems.

I've flown them many times and my only real complaint has been their late departures. Check-in staff have been fine. Had one in Singapore query my visa but by the end of our conversation he was asking me for information on places to see in Bangkok :o Had a ticketing problem a while back and was dreading trying to sort it out with the call center after all I'd read but they couldn't have been nicer.

  11. Do you mean the quick launch bar? Right click any icon you don't want and hit delete. If you get a message saying it's a program you want to delete then delete it the proper way e.g. go to Set Program Access and defaults and delete it from in there.

Turning off your computer? Two ways you could look at it. The first is turn it off to save power. The second is leave it on because turning it on and off causes wear and tear. I turn mine off unless I really need to keep downloading a torrent overnight because if I don't then the room won't cool down.

  12. Using True and there is a problem for sure. Just tried a couple of torrents that I know should download at maximum speed within two minutes yet it took about five minutes before even one would start downloading out of 600 seeds and 70 peers and it was a peer from Thailand so nothing international is getting through. I always use random ports and encryption so it's unlikely to be blocked by True. The rain has been very heavy. Saw a KFC and an MK closed today due to water damage caused when the roof caved in because of torrential rain.

  13. 700+ comments on the BBC 606 website in only 4 hours on the topic Eriksson To Be Sacked - Absolutely Crazy that's got to be close to a record number of posts in such a short time for the website and 99% agreeing that it's a crazy decision if it turns out to be true. Supporters from all EPL clubs can't believe it. City were close to relegation last season and despite falling away in the latter part of this season are thought to have had a good season by just about everyone except Thaksin. Maybe he wants to appoint a Thai manager so the team can all walk off when they don't like a decision...

  14. I think its a bit of a con job looking back, I was running over €1000 a month in o2 bills in Ireland, o2 give me this metallic silver 6610i (looked great back then!!! lol!) but in reality there was no future for the phone. Of course o1 would have known that, I did not.

That would apply to most 5? year old phones anyway. It was a decent phone in it's day but it's like saying a 5 year old computer is a con because it's motherboard can't run a current dual core CPU and uses SDRAM memory which isn't upgradeable with cheap as chips DDR2 memory. Five years is a long time in technology.

  15. I received an invitation from someone I hadn't heard from for ages but sent to an e-mail they haven't used for me for at least a year. Signed up using a diferent new e-mail I created only for Hi5 so I could take a look at their profile, no problem as I had an empty address book for the new e-mail. A week later I thought I'd check that new e-mail to see if there was any e-mail in it and couldn't sign in because it had been disabled by the provider. Maybe it was disabled because the Hi5 signup was causing it to be seen as a spammer. Hi5 is probably not the only one of the facebook type sites that pull this stunt. There is probably some condition when you signup that gives them permission to use your address book.

  16. You can afford to build a computer to your own specifications but not pay for a genuine version of Windows, then you complain because Microsoft don't want to update your dodgy version???

I can translate the tricky wording for you. It says Microsoft doesn't update software they didn't sell you. :o

The Apple suggestion sounds good. I'm sure buying a Mac will be cheaper than paying for Windows :D :D

  17. Tried what you are wanting to do with proxies that are available for free on various websites, and even with ones that are recognised as being UK by other websites but haven't had any luck. Maybe some of the paid proxies work but I don't know if they are country specific and that's what is required I think. I haven't had any luck downloading programs from the US networks either who, while they allow US based people free downloads of their shows will block anyone with a non US IP. I'm sure you know how to download tv programs using other methods and an internet search on one site shows a number of results for snooker. Are you able to view Astro where you live? They show a lot of snooker, pool etc. much of it live.

I'd be more helpful but you can't mention :o or :D or :D or :D or :D or even :D on TV... :D
