  1. You thing too mut...  :o

    however a few points.

One reason why you see many items being opened is so the shop can affix a warranty/ proof of puchase sticker. Buy almost anything electrical and many shops will also open it for you so you can see it works, even cheap items like a toaster. Buy a light globe at Tesco or BigC and you will see a board to plug in and test the globe isn't faulty. Thais will always check before buying.

What you found was correct, prices can be identical at shop after shop. Okay, sometimes you get lucky and find a shop that has an overstock or a special promotion but don't be surprised if you check 10 shops and find 10 identical prices. If you want to negotiate then getting something extra thrown in or a variation on the credit charge is more likely than getting a discount that makes up for all the time you spent comparing prices. Bought a washing machine recently and the place I bought it from had the same price as everywhere else but threw in a vacuum cleaner which I sold the next day for 2000 baht so that was my discount. Got a 4000 baht tv with a 13000 baht refrigerator another time. Margins are tight so there isn't really a lot of room for haggling. I think also that often the person you're buying from is only getting paid a few hundred baht a day and still gets paid the same amount whether you buy or not so no incentive to reduce a price to get the sale.

Never had a problem buying at Pantip unlike some people but the advice about buying from the bigger stores makes sense if you are buying something expensive. Shops like IT City, JIB, BigIT and Hardware House are well known and have many branches so less likey not to be around in a years time if something goes wrong. I've seen the HH service centre near Fortune and it's a professional setup, something smaller shops won't have and some don't want to help with problems once the sale is complete while the bigger shops will in my experience treat you properly. Smaller shops might also be selling grey market items so the manufacturers warranty isn't really there for you. My observation is most shops expect the same price for the last display item as they charged for the untouched items. Shops like Carrefour will sell floor stock at reduced prices but so many shops won't, they seem to want to hang on to things forever until they get the price they want. Seems crazy at times and it's not as bad as it used to be but I've offered what I thought was a decent price for a floor stock item and no interest in my offer or as others have found out, floor stock may not be for sale at any price, TIT.

COMMART is an interesting place to visit but notebooks there are so in demand that it's a terrible place if you want to compare different models as the sales staff are under seige. Discounts for current models, don't expect more than 10%, more likely 5%. There can be big discounts, up to 50% on older low spec models but I've never seen anything worth buying even at those prices. On the Acer site there is a section for reduced to clear items at their factory outlet in Bangkok, mentioned on TV before so do a search. I have noticed lately however that the bargains aren't what they used to be but take a look just in case.

This is probably as good a board as any if you want info in English about IT products in Thailand otherwise plenty of review sites like Anandtech, Tweaktown, Techreport etc.

Oh, and free software. If you can pay 30,000 or whatever for a notebook then if it doesn't come with genuine software buy a real version of Windows etc. for 3,000++ baht, not the 150 baht version. Too many problems people have relate to Pantip versions even though there's people who will tell you they've never had problems. No longer worth the hassle in my opinion.

Online stores? Unless you are on a remote island then wouldn't you want to try before you buy? Prices for most things are more expensive online whenever I've looked. There isn't really a Thai version of Newegg.

  2. Did you ever take a look at the Asus forum and try asking there?

    http://vip.asus.com/forum/topic.aspx?board...SLanguage=en-us

Check you have the latest BIOS and drivers.

Asus is considered a top tier brand so I'd spend a little more time on it before giving up. Only time I've had real problems with an Asus board in the last couple of years was due to onboard RAID issues.

Did you ever try a different power supply or RAM as they would be prime suspects. You have checked that your RAM is rated for that board? If not then it might need some tweaking in the BIOS. (what are the exact specs of the RAM you are using?) Try running with only one stick of RAM to eliminate the possibility that one might be faulty, assuming you are using more than one...

Intel boards I've seen in Bangkok have been pretty basic. DFI could be worth a look if you want something upmarket.

  3. EDIT:

I've delete the whole list which was placed here and filled just as little as 25 screen pages on monitor with 1680 x 1050 resolution which is just unacceptable!

Some people simply have no sense of humour...

Reimar have you thought of using a mouse with accelerated scrolling, and perhaps a bigger monitor :D

You know, it didn't look quite so long when I copied it in Word... :o

  4. Terribly sorry mapguy but you know what Thai television is like, hardly any English language shows, just tons of silly Thai soap operas. I only have a few more series torrents to download below and then I'm done.

    EDIT:

I've delete the whole list which was placed here and filled just as little as 25 screen pages on monitor with 1680 x 1050 resolution which is just unacceptable!

  5. WPA2 Password generator

Don't know if a lot of people are using old gear but when I see other networks very few use WPA2, plenty of people still using WEP.

There are a places in most IT Malls selling replacement antennas. Try a simple 5DBI one first. A D-link antenna sells for 190 baht and might be enough to make a difference, it did for me. A 9DBI antenna is going to be big, more expensive, 1000 baht I think I've seen them for.

  6. Did some shopping in Villa Ari the other night and cheese is pricy there as well, surprised anyone buys it but I didn't notice the brand referred to earlier. They did have some decent natural yoghurt and other Thai produced yoghurt that was quite cheap. Tasted okay though not as good as the European product however for the price I would buy again.

  7. Logitech R20

About 1000 baht. They're not bad for the price so I have them in an area where a good set of speakers isn't essential and would get trashed anyway. You can find them at Hardware House shops.

If I was choosing a set of speakers for jazz and classical and it was to be my only set then I would up the budget to at least 2000 baht. I know you can't always go by price but when I compare the R20's to my more expensive speakers the difference is clear. Go to somewhere like IT City where they have a decent range at different prices and where they usually have some set up so you can hear them, then decide. Creative, Altec Lansing and Logitech are some brands where you should find something decent.

  8. Then, that's contrary to what DELL APJ manager told me 2 years ago - DELL does not play in home market in Thai. That's what their web site shows.

It is not possible to buy DELL for individual use, no resellers, for them PCs brought in for other countries do not exist.

If I am wrong, I will be the first one to buy DELL for use in Thailand.

Times have changed so you need to take a walk around Panthip, Fortune or Zeer some time. Plenty of shops selling Dell laptops now and you don't need to be a corporate buyer. If you ever read the newspaper in Thailand you will often see half or even full page advertisments for Dell and some of the models advertised are for consumer use. There's not the large range you find in the USA but still there's about 4 main models with various configurations. Let us know which model you buy for yourself :o

  9. I'm sure there must be some posters who order books from Amazon or even other USA based booksellers online.

Have you experienced any problems? Do the books always get delivered to you and importantly, have you run into problems with the local post office or customs?

I stopped ordering anything from outside of Thailand a few years ago after some bad experiences with the local post office. If you order books from Amazon have you had to pay additional charges at the Thai end before they would be handed over?

  10. It saddens me to to say it but I have to agree that The Nation is in decline. Why I don't know exactly but I suspect the same amount of money isn't being put in to it as before. You only have to see the decreasing standard of English especially on the website to realise that there can't be very many native English speakers employed anymore. Almost everyday there are articles printed that don't add up, by that I mean simple facts and statements are made that don't make sense yet few reporters ever think to ask how can that be, but I suppose the Nation is not the only newspaper in Thailand guilty of that.

Do Thais read The Nation? I can't ever remember seeing a Thai with a copy and the guy who delivers my paper says I am the only person he delivers to, but he does deliver a few copies of the Post along with all the Thai language papers. One place I visit has newspapers for people to read but unless there is another western person about (rare) I always find The Nation to be the only paper left as everyone else waiting reads the Thai papers. Some Thais must read the Nation because if you have a look at their competition winners and golf day photos you will struggle to find a western name or face. There are also the advertisments all in Thai which has always struck me as strange for an English language paper.

  11. According to this news item there is a conspiracy to ensure boxers from Thailand get "unfriendly judges"

Thai flyweight Amnat wasn't happy with the judges either. I don't know a lot about boxing but watching the Amnat fight the other night he was hopeless. Most of the fight both boxers were just shadow boxing with the Mongolian fighter landing the odd punch. How anyone can think the fight may have been "fixed" by the judges amazes me. The Thai fighter was simply not good enough against an opponent who wasn't a whole lot better. Should be interesting when the Thai ABA president returns to Thailand and reveals all about the "traitors" :o
