  1. I've met a few guys living and working in Thailand while still collecting unemployment from back home. Kinda wish my country did that too :D

If you were French... I met a young woman with kid in 1999, who was travelling all over SE Asia, sponsored by the French taxpayers. Reasoning: the living costs and benefits costs (to the unemployed) were lower in SE Asia(!) Happy French, and stingy government in my home country, where you won't get a penny if you don't show up every other week, and where unemployment benefits to overseas residents have always been declined

  2. We, a group of teachers started work last month at a private school. We were told by the owner that we'd be paid from the 20th of the month, which corresponded to the terms of the written employment contract. We were supposed to take care of our visas, starting teaching on the 26th of October. As it turns out, the salary paid to us was for one week only, starting on the 26th! Should we insist on the terms of the contract ("The Employer agrees to pay the Employee ... baht per month for the period commencing on the date stated above." i.e. the 20th! ) and the agreement with the owner?

  3. The percent should be for sure doubled due to the huge underground economy fueled by tourists (prostitution, tax evasion, etc). I can see here in KPG that most of the small, medium and some of the big tourist-related business pay peanuts as tax

I agree, and wonder whether all the transfer wires from Westerners to their tee-ruks in Thailand are included in the figure of 6%. Also, how about foreigners' expenditure on prostitution: in order to be included in the official figure, the money would have to be declared by the pros.., erm service girls and then taxed by the government, right? How often does that actually happen??
  4. I don't have children on my own, but yes, I am more careful when 'handling' Thai kids as a teacher.

My girlfriend has three children from an earlier marriage. For some reason she let them stay at my apartment last year for a few weeks. A few stupid Thais suggested that my partner brought the older one (15 yrs. old) to my apartment so that I can have sex with her. :bah::angry::annoyed:

Some people really have only Som Tam for brains... :ermm:

  5. I once went by minibus from Sungai Kolok to Hat Yai. After a short ride a Thai woman entered the minibus, glanced at me, made a face and mumbled "falang"...

Another time a bus conductor on a private bus told the female owner, who was also riding on that bus 'Falang are people too, arent' they...', to which she replied: "Falang mai khon!" :D

    Racism in Thailand? Nooooooooooooooooooo. :):D

  6. Who in their right mind keeps 12 million baht sitting unattended in a parked car/truck sitting around the Nana area?

And are we supposed to think this Columbian gang just happened to get lucky and steal a bag from inside a locked pickup truck that just happened to contain 12 million baht???

The whole thing seems more than a bit strange...

An insider job, here in Thailand?? No way! cool.gif

  8. I think the issue you are having is to do with Pay day. Some banks limit interbank transactions around pay day - at least they used to?

Let me get this straight, if I want to withdraw, say 20,000 baht, does that mean that I have to withdraw 10 times 2,000 baht at a total fee of 200 baht only because it's the end of the month and pay day time in Thailand? :)

  9. You don't say which bank you bank with. With Bangkok Bank if I withdraw outside of my banking area it cost 20 baht per 10,000 withdrawn.

Well, does it matter which bank's ATM? My situation is this. I have an ATM card from outside Bangkok. Yesterday I tried to get money from Krungsri Bank's ATMs in the upper Sukhumvit area. There are two in my area which I tried yesterday: first one was out of order and the second one I tried was limited to only 2,000 baht(!) at a fee of 20 baht. My question now is, if I used my card at Bangkok Bank's or Kasikorn Bank's ATMs, would I still pay 20 baht per withdrawal or more?? :)

(Perhaps someone knows Krungsri's ATMs in the Onnut area which I don't know? And yes, the one in Tesco's is the one limited to 2,000 baht per withdrawal.)
