  1. I have a 40 year old Omega manual wind watch. A couple weeks ago it stopped running and no amount of tapping it would restart.

After searching on Thaivisa for recommendations on watch repair, I took it to the big watch store on Thapae Rd just west of Bangkok Bank. The technician there opened the watch, examined it and told me that the movement was bad and needed to be replaced. He said he could get one from BKK. Cost - 5000 baht.

I was somewhat surprised, so decided to get a second opinion before commiting that much expense.

I took it to the watch repair guy at Robinson in Airport Plaza(also mentioned on TV). He examined it, said it needed cleaning and lubrication. 700 baht, ready in 30 mins.

Not much decision for me. Had a beer at the cowboy bar, picked up the watch. It has been running fine ever since. May stop tomorrow, but so far so good.

  2. For written test, I did not have US motorcycle license so had to take.

I did not study anything beforehand or watch any videos. Took the test first time and failed. It told me correct answers. Took again immediately and passed.

  3. I'd recommend Ausiris as they manufacture world standard bars:-

    http://www.ausiris.co.th/th/

They now have a shop at Nim Plaza - 2nd floor in the complex by the Rimping near Aiport Central.

I just looked at the website and I believe they do not manufacture their own gold bars.

They state that the 96.5% bars are made and certified by Unicore in Germany and the 99.9% bars by PAMP in Switzerland.

From the pictures, the bars have the Ausiris logo, but the manufacture is outside their scope of business.

This is not necessarily a bad thing but it is misleading to say they smelt the bars themselves.

  4. Written test is really no problem. I took it last year and failed on first atttempt. It then tells you the correct answers and you can retake immediately.

I had to take all of the tests, including motorcycle driving test, because I wanted motorcycle and car licenses and did not have motorcycle before.

Only problem I saw was the long waiting perods between steps. My advice, go early and take a book.

  5. Probably have a better shot in Bangkok than here. Also he will pay the going price for gold which isn't cheap right now. There is a gold shop above the airport Rimping that sells bullion, maybe they could help.

I buy some small quantities of bullion in CM and most of the gold shops have it but I have found no place selling gold coins here. Don't know about BKK.

  6. I have never looked for any there but I have to imagine the Medical supply place at Suthep and Nimmanhemin would have it..

thanks. went there today. got good news/bad news/more good news.

Good News, they sell it. Bad news, out of stock. Good news, they will call me when it comes in, late this week of early next week.

    thanks again!!

  7. Agree. Investing in Thai stocks is not for the faint hearted or beginning trader, but there are opportunities ,both short and long term, for price appreciation while receiving dividends far above any bank deposits.

Takes diligence and some work but can be reqarding. Some of the brokers provide good company reports and information. I use this as a starting point and then do my own analysis to decide where I want to put my money.

  8. Mustard Seeds: available at the Indian shop in Wararoot market (Kad Luang).

I have been buying my spices at Wararoot shop also and been pleased. HOWEVER, I was in Makro recently (do not go often) and they have wonderful selection of spices, including mustard seed, and good prices. Example - i bought 200g of cinnamon sticks for 45 bht. If you know of better, I would appreciate the information.

  9. I have waited to post followup reply until work was complete. Have now finished root canals, fillings and a crown at Dental4U on Thapae road and could not be happier with the quality, service and prices.

Filling prices depended on complexity, root canal was 6000 and crown was 6000 plus I had to have a post put in for the crown which was 3500.

Efficient, clean, painless and professional. Highly recommended.

  10. Don't kill the ants its pointless, you needs to kill the queen.

Use bait traps where they collect the poisoned food and feed it to the Queen.

I have been looking for the queen. I assume she has big feet, an Adams apple and a deep voice, but no luck so far.

I know. Where can i find this queen killer poison in CM? I used many times in the US for fire ants but have not seen here.

  11. I see them almost daily around he sinks in my kitchen and bath.

I am less humane than many. I kill what i see and if i can define a trail , I spray it with insecticide.. Slows them down but not stop. I am in a condo on 12th floor.

  12. The bailouts and stimulus packages, anything the banks needed to be saved. The thing that was heading us towards total MELTDOWN was the BANKING and CREDIT LIQUIDITY crisis. He also picked that genius Geithner even though he is not popular.

The biggest mistake O has made so far? The stimulus packages were not BIG ENOUGH.

Austerity? Well what choice is there? The bubble has burst.

I am neither a Bush fan nor an Obama opponent , but as I recall, the TARP program to rescue the financial institutions was passed and begun last September under Bush/Paulson/Bernanke. It has only been continued under Obama/Geitner/Bernanke. The taxpayer has bailed out the failing businesses so they can now continue the same extreme practices that caused their problems before. We are allowing those who are "too big to fail" to get bigger.

From what we read only 10% of the "stimulus" money has gotten into the pipelines so it is a little early to judge the success or failure but I don't expect much from it. Over half of the "stimulus" money was to provide support for unfunded Medicare obligations with no stimulus benefit.

The logic of the "cash for clunkers" program escapes me. The taxpayer is borrowing from China to give to people who have a paid for vehicle so they will take on new debt at a time of economic crisis when people should be paying off debt, not getting more. The first data shows that Michigan had the highest number of CFC tradeins. Michigan also has the highest unemployment rate in the country.

I actively invest in markets around the world and in the past 2-3 months have done well. However, I think the "recovery" is a house of cards that will crash , so be prepared. It may be next month or next year, but the worst is yet to come. Government borrowing and spending cannot sustain an economy.

The cash for clunkers is mainly incentive now so as the USA can reduce its importing of oil which it does by around 70% by providing stimulas which by the way is only a few billion bucks, chump change compared to other stimulus. I can see its long term benefits and its directly measurable , that is they know where every cent is going. (for a change) Yes there is credit involved naturally but the terms and conditions attached to the loans are dramatically differnet to what they used to be. You have to have a rating now so it will be a haealthy credit. I worked in finance in a toyota dealership for 16 months 15 years ago. back then we used to lend bankrupts money as long as they paid 28% interest. I got paid on Interest and I will never forget telling a bankrupt who was trying to screw me down on the interstest this... "Sir why dont you just Take the finanace as it is, your not going to pay any of it anyway and at least I make some commisiion" I could never figure out why they lent monet to bankrupts, oh well we all found out the consequnces last yaer!

Anyone with a buy button would have made money last 6 months, the real test is as you mention is about come. However if sentiment returns ,look out above. I Know the numbers re unemployment are laughably small in their difference however we aren't looking for a V recovery but a very stretched out U type of recovery. Theoretically if only a few hundred jobs a month better every single month then we are bottoming and being forward thinking that's all the markets need to know. There has to be a time in every great cycle when you look back and say Gee If only I bought BHP, RIO, LEI at those prices. That time IMO is slipping away, they all well above their bottoms from 6 months ago

The traded in clunkers would have been off the road in a few years anyway. All this did was subsidize current auto sales at the sacrifice of future sales in the name of energy savings. The real beneficiaries are the financial institutions making the loans on these new cars. Deposits of these govt provided funds improves their balance sheets and will increase the money supply by almost 300 billion dollars. Maybe the quality of the loans has improved, maybe not. On a $20000 car, the govt is providing a 20% down payment and I suspect almost anyone can qualify with 20%.

If it is such a good thing, why limit it at 3 billion dollars? Let's give money to everybody who trades in a less efficient vehicle for a more efficient one. Same thing for refrigerators, air conditioners.

Enough of my rant. I actually have more important things to do than bitch about stuff I can do nothing about.

  14. Bjohn, absolutely true, what is good for one is not necessarily good for everyone. Is that trading US stocks? About the best deal you can get in the UK is 10 pounds commission charge, so 20 pounds to buy and sell plus half % stamp duty on the buy. That's a total of about 45 pounds on an average deal or 75 $US.

I mainly only deal in stocks listed on the London stock exchange, maybe other exchanges don't suffer these occasional extremely large spreads?

When I trade the indices via CFDs, I do use stoplosses as the spreads do not alter unexpectedly.

eg. In my previous post I said that I'm inclined to think that the German Dax will fall, it's 5333 at the moment and so I would maybe short it with a stoploss at 5383. The spread on the Dax is always 2, so no nasty surprises.

The same with currency pairs, little change in the spread and so I use stoplosses. Mind you, I've only started currencies about 4 months ago, so still a lot to learn. Any expert advice on currency pairs would be much appreciated. I'm only concentrating on the Euro/US$ at the moment, learning to walk before I start running.

I deal CFDs with Cantours and Spreadbetting with MAN group. Unfortunately, neither have the facility to place a trailing stoploss. I feel that this could be very useful with currencies. Anybody have any recommendations? I believe that IG offer a trailing stoploss, anybody had any experience with them? I think that I will have to be in the UK to open a new account as they usually will send a contract and contact by telephone.

I trade US, London, Canada, Hong Kong and Australia. I use my Interactivebrokers account for all of these. As examples, commission on London stock transaction is 6 GBP each way up to 50000 GBP trade value. US stock commission is $0.005USD per share with minimum of $1.00US.

I use my IB account for forex trades also.

I also trade Shanghai B shares and Thai SET stocks but have separate accounts for these as they are not avaiable on my IB account.

  15. I'm not a big fan of stoplosses myself. Even large cap stocks are subject to occasional exceptionally large spreads that can trigger a stoploss!

    Different strokes for different folks.

I use stoplosses on every equity position I have and if a particilar stock has moved up very rapidly, i move the stops up daily and keep them tight to protect as much profit as i can. Occasionally one gets triggered that I did not intend, but with commissions so low at $1-$3 each way, I can buy back in with little cost penalty if I decide to. It is cheap insurance to me.

  16. A couple of years ago I had a lot of dental surgery done at Grace clinic... including 9 root canals. I was very pleased with the service. During the root canals they stopped at several times to take more exrays to make SURE that they had were ge - tting it done correctly. I was happy with the cost and certainly far less than the same procedure in Canada.

I had one root canal done last week and am having another today at Dental4u on Thapae Rd not far from Thapae Gate.

Dr. Jutamas Malarat is the endodontist there who does the root canals. I was very pleased with the professional, efficient and friendly service and have had no after effects from the first one. Have not seen final bill yet but am expecting about 6000baht/tooth.
