  1. What is the time limit for editing posts? and why would anyone be prevented from editing?

I need to edit a post on the Motor Forum> Cars for sale. Please help.

Send an email to support @thaivisa.com (remove the space between support and the "@" symbol), and mention what needs to be edited.

Have to limit members abilities to edit stuff, otherwise people could go back through posts over the years and make all sorts of changes (probably mess up the database too).

    Thanks for the replies...

Yes, I do understand the necessity to have some limitations on editing. but 30mins? :o

Also, in the Motor Forum / Cars for Sale (and other similar areas as well), one cannot reply either. This makes it impossible to add anything you forgot the first time, and perhaps even more importantly, let everyone know when the item is sold off. Hope TV comes up with a more efficient way to do this.

  2. My FIL says he got harassed by the cops in Malaysia quite a few times driving a Thai registered car. basically the Malaysian version of the thai cops asking for tea money I guess. Has this happened to anyone here? Also, if you are given a ticket, what is the procedure?

I am considering driving there for the New Year if possible. Any advice specially applicable to this time of the year would be appreciated.

  3. This is part of the help topic "Posting":

    Editing Posts

Above any posts that you have made, you may see an 'Edit' button. Pressing this will allow you to edit the post that you had previously made.

When editing you may see an option to 'Add the 'Edit by' line in this post?'. If you tick this then it will show up in the posts that it has been edited and the time at which it was edited. If this option does not appear, then the edit by line will always be added to the post.

If you are unable to see the edit button displayed on each post that you have made, then the administrator may have prevented you from editing posts, or the time limit for editing may have expired.

  4. Rims coming off my recently bought BMW 316.

Going back to the originals as 17"s are too big for my car IMO.

(apparently previous owner had a different opinion)

I'm no expert on rims, but she says they're good ones (imported?).

Unfortunately though, there is a mended crack in one of them.

(Bquik guy says its no big deal: my tyres has been too small for them)

    B7000 ono.

  5. I'm about to buy a 96 Volvo 850 for a fair price. Has anyone ever used a car testing company called CarTrust?

It's basically a couple of chungs on a motorbike who will come out and check if your car is a lemon before you part with your hard-earned cash. They'll hook in a computer and check error codes - all in all, I've been told they will spend about an hour on giving the car a once over. It looks similar to TestCar but they come to you or wherever the car is on an orange motocycle.

I know nothing about cars so this seems like a great idea. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has had good or bad experience with this company.

    Cheers.

I bought a car last week, and was initially thinking of using testcar, but had to give it up because it was practically too far. I could have used Car Trust, but wasn't very inspired after seeing the posts here. Eventually, I did the body check myself, got a local mechanic to give an opinion on the engine/transmission (200B/15 min), and got the tyres/suspension checked for free at Bquik! (Yeah, checks are free..)

Probably not as good as a laser scan and a dyno test, but that did the job for me. At least, I didn't need the dyno test after putting the car to test on the road. After all, what you need is a 0/1 result (good enough to buy or not), so most of the data from the dyno test goes waste unless you pay per horsepower. It might give you a sense of security if you no next to nothing about cars though.

  6. How would you actually know (for sure) the date of manufacture/import of a tyre?

found the answer myself. last 4 digits of the tyre identification code: week and yr of manufacture.

eg. 2305 means 23rd week of 2005 (applies to tyres manufactured after 2000)

  7. Check the dates...

Sometimes on high end tires the stock is old and they have been stored poorly.

I had a Friend who went through his tires in months, when he went back to the same tyre shop for replacements he noticed that the import date on the tyres was something in the region of 7-8 years...

Yeah, I am worried about that as the present tyres have that problem.

(They deliberately put them on the wrong side so that a soft spot bulging out would go in the inner side and thus hidden from the unsuspecting previous owner of the car! pretty dangerous)

How would you actually know (for sure) the date of manufacture/import of a tyre? btw, bridgestone is made in thailand it seems.

  8. ....does scratch remover actually do anything?,....i've never tried it.....question is; is it worth buying at all?

Can do quite a good job if you know what you are doing. gotta choose the right product for the scratch you have and gotta do the job right. I haven't seen much of them in LOS tho.

  9. I bought it finally at long last. It's a 316i Compact 3Dr 1996 model.

I guess I got tired of looking for virtually non-existant MT 525's,

and since I got a good deal (270k) for the 316 from the owner herself,

    decided to go for it.

It's running well except for some minor things like a loose steering rack..

It seems that every BMW forum I have read, owners have complained of power window motors failing. This seems to be a long-term problem that has affected a broad range of models and carried over with each model change.

and yes, a failed window motor gear set. (being fixed right now).

Thanks for all the info again, everyone.

  10. Buying tyres here has always been an uninformative process without much choice...

This time I need a couple of 215/45 R17s. They've got Bridgestone for B4300 at the local Autoboy...

(no catalog. will never see them till they order them down)

They've also got the Malaysian Astar 300 for B3000 for which they have stocks. Has anyone used Astar? wondering if they're worth the price.

  11. I find them very friendly and helpful as well. For example once I got a speeding ticket for going 125KPh on the motorway. 200 Baht, no problems, all smiles, and they let us go with the helpful advice that there were more police checkpoints to come along the road. And if we get caught all we have to do is show the receipt.

    A uniquely Thai experience .... :o

    A 200B ticket to the Autobahn....cool.

  12. PAD needs to be tossed in jail.

I wonder who will take responsibility for the whole mess. And how all Thais and non-Thais who have lost money/something more valuable due to it will be recompensed. Who will apologize and how.

And who will be brave enough to ensure the travellers that they don't have to be afraid of travelling to Thailand and can book their tickets, hotels and so on in advance.

I need an answer to this: Did I miss something or did the perpetrators get a royal pardon?

PS> What are the chances of me getting a royal pardon if I kidnap the next cop who asks for tea money? :o

  13. But nothing has been solved...the can just kicked down the road a bit :o

Also, don't put much credence in the rulings of the "Constitutional Court." It's a creature of [actually created by] the military junta government that staged the initial coup against the elected Thaskin government.

Of course. If you look at the ruling closely, the other two parties banned along with the PPP didn't even contest for the elections together. Is it just a coincidence that just the very parties who LATER made a coallition govt when none of them had a majority, rigged the votes? The ex-PM head of the 2nd party was really pissed it seems.

  14. The frustrated public has started boycotting products/services of PAD-supporting organizations.

According to a thai web blog, Bangkok bank is having big withdrawals taking place recently.

Someone who wanted to close her 20mil bhat account was told she cannot withdraw more than 2mil per day.

mm, I smell trouble...lucky I don't have an account with them.

  15. Just saw some docu on Thai TV on how many of those PAD protesters brought their kids to this airport siege over the weekend???

Are they out of their mind or what? Thois kids should be taken away from those parents to never being returned again. Who in their straight mind would ever endanger their own kids like that??? And then when Police or Army moves in we will have to look atall those litle corpses and say shame on the Police or what??? Just a bit of tear gas would do serious damage to any kid. They brought some kids out there younger then 5 or 6 years old as it was some sort of family outing like going to Pattaya Park water park???

Shame on you I can understand youhave something against somethig or want to make a point but never ever put any kids in danger.

    Idiots

You want to blame the parents if the police murders children???

I've been thinking: maybe we need a rule banning idiots from the forum...or maybe a special place for them (the room for the "mentally challenged"?) so that the others can use their time more productively.

  16. Remember, the real terrorists in these events have been bombing and grenading the PAD for quite awhile!

Because of those terrorists, PAD has returned the Government House without conditions. No one wants to do anything, both Army and Police, so citizens have to be terrorists to shoot "peaceful :D " protestors.

    Interesting comment, Koo.

Please be clear, are you openly agreeing here, that the people who were shooting & throwing hand-grenades at the PAD, were in fact the government-supporters ? And that you approve of these tactics ?? :D

May I answer that? I don't support violence at any level, but when those who are supposed to take care of law and order are not doing their job, whoever tries to do that for them is the need of the hour. At least they did a much better job than the cops. they didn't get abducted for heavens sake! :o

  17. Lots of cynical posts here. I'm so pleased that it's over but I've been saddened by the posts and comments I've seen made on TV by farangs who don't understand the Thai people, or what they're fighting for. I don't understand the situation fully myself but I give the Thai people credit for being reasonably intelligent people who have a cause to fight for rightly or wrongly. Comments like "4th world country" and "cockamamy stupid protest" are typical of the farang who is so small minded that they can't see beyond their own selfishness. May there be no more trouble. Thailand is a wonderful place and I'm so pleased that I have been fortunate enough to retire here. To the farangs who have been inconvenienced, I'm so sorry for you, but if you don't want to return because you feel that the Thai people are a bunch of 4th world idiots, well, that's OK with me.

My thai wife joins me in asking you: If you cannot appreciate the cynicism here, don't care to comment. All farangs here are not stupid or just trying to pretend to know what they don't know. Actually, some of the farangs like me haven't even commented about the conspiracy theory that is gossiped around inner circles in Bangkok only because we don't want to break the law of the land. And for your info, "the thai people" are not fighting. they're taking their money out of bangkok bank.

  18. Double standards: one group gets punished and a court ruling about the airport can be ignored with impunity.

Try this anywhere else and you will get to meet a SWAT team. In some places, life ammo might be used.

So the law is being followed, as long as it suits some groups.

mm, pretty much the sh*tiest hel_llhole in Asia after NorthKorea.

  19. btw, the frustrated public has started boycotting products/services of PAD supporting organizations.

According to a thai web blog, Bangkok bank is having big withdrawals taking place recently.

Someone who wanted to close her 20mil bhat account was told she cannot withdraw more than 2mil per day.

mm, I smell trouble...lucky I don't have an account with them.

  20. There is an awful lot of equipment/gear/supplies etc at the airport, plus getting out safely. Remember, the real terrorists in these events have been bombing and grenading the PAD for quite awhile!

the real terrorists ha!? afaik, there was only one terrorist group within miles from the airport.

so it just ends lika that ha? what happens to the perpetrators? they just walk????

  21. A motocade of red-shirts headed south on the highway at Ngamwonwan 10 mins ago? A few hundreds at least, but could have been more as I didn't see them all (my ofice is next to the highway). They were in pretty high spirits. Many motocycles were also (illegally) accompanying them on the highway. Any ideas as to where they are heading?

PS> I'd love to have a much awaited emergency holiday tomorrow.. :o

  22. Is this poster for real?

Koo82: Please, read some news once in a while, watch some news programs, something...that isn't just more of the Thaksin Kool Aid...if you did, you might have known about the teargas grenades of military grade that blow peoples limbs off and killed one unarmed young woman during the 7 Oct clash.

Tv showed that the Police brought the tear gas they used on 7 Oct to test after being blamed. Not strong enough to tear a sheet of paper.

So, you broke into my house. If I fight with you, I'm wrong.

some of them have obviously got some extra limbs doing what they're doing. let's hope gas grenades get the right limbs. whoever are still there are bringing it on to themselves.
