  1. if you have a new passport you can try vientiane again. When your passport look new and nice without stamps they dont check for your history on computer

another option would be going to Phnom Penh directly and then try it there.

*Dont forget to pass your permision of stay from the old to the new passport. It is for free and make you look like a good tourist who lost it's passport and followed the rule and not like a foreigner that knows that this is not really necesarry when you are on a visa exemption and about to depart Thailand.

  2. Easist thing is to combine two two

Fly here without a visa but with a flexible ticket which allows for changes in the date (so when you come it is within the 30 days and once here you can change it to the real date

After you have spend the first 30 days go to Vientiane and get a double entry tourist visa. (this will give you nearly 180 days just check out all the info which is here about this matter)

Like thid no hassle involved just a trip to Vientiane which when you are only holiday is not bad

  3. Complete Rip of ! ! which will happen only if you buy from small shops

Much better to buy from Large shops. Of Course Chinatown is the best since the will even accept to buy back large quantities on weekends. with the price of of closure of the spot market on Friday. Specially interesting if as usual the Chinese hike their interest rate on Saturday and on Monday Gold prices go down a lot.

  4. Your Thai bank will happily assist you offering you some fonds

Dont get those since they cost more and dont add any value

Ask for "Index zertifikates" this will represent the SET development 1 to 1 with a annual cost of around 0.01% and the difference between BID and ASK will be around 0.25% or less. You should make sure that the certificate is emitted by a non US or EU Bank since this is currently safer

  5. By law you need to have anoutgoing ticket paid in full to be allowed to get the visa exemption stamp. (this can be a train ticket Bangkok Buttherworth hich you later can cancel and you will get most of the money back)

But the only border checkpoint which do check this requirement sometimes for nationals of EU/US/Japan/Australia New Zealand/Canada is the border checkpoint at poipet and than only for those who try to do back to back visa exemption stamp.

So I would say that you are pretty safe doing this at Nongkhai and if you want to be 100% get yourself the train ticket and with this you are guaranteed that they wont reject you.

  6. if you wanna get a work permit in the next one or 2 years the risk is very high that your work permit is rejected.

if you are planning to come back and stay as a tourist there shouldn't be any problem for you if you leave within the time frame (the day you employer stops paying taxes and salary for you is the last day you can leave)

  7. Hi Klaus,

I'm a former Bangkok resident and have used this border crossing about a dozen times since 2001 and last time in April of last year. While it is pretty awful, if you want to go to Battambang (and on to PP) it is still the best option travel-wise.

I have used it one time to go overland to Phnom Penh and I think it is not worth the hassle. You better fly with Air Asia to Phnom Penh. if you book well in advance you can get it for around 1500 Baht. and you arrive in Phnom Penh in 5 hours from your house in Bangkok to your hotel in Phnom Penh without having to fight against scammers and problems for a whole day. By land this trip takes around 16 hour and it just a experience I think nobody needs.

  8. Cancellation of work permit need to be done in the labour department office responsible of the area where your company is located

Cancellation of Visa need to be done at the immigration office responsible for the are you lived*

    * (normally same area like for the work permit but not necessary specially in Bangkok some people work in Bangkok but live in Nontaburi and need to do the immigration related stuff at Nontaburi immigration offices)

  9. first van leaves around 7 if I remember well and the earliest I have taken left at 8. It takes them usually a bit under 3 hours to the border. The trip normaly is done with a less than 5 minutes stop on a petrol station.

If you wanna go go cambodia poipet is really a bad place for this because there is a big transportation mafia on the other side. My recommendation would be to try to find some other foreigners meanwhile you wait at the queues at thai immigrations who want to go to the same destination as you and join together with them. if you have a group of 4 o 10 it is the best because you will fill a car or minivan completely and this increases your negotiation power when it comes to prices. And obviously it is always better to travel with people you choose than to be thrown together with all type of people by the transportation mafia over there.

If your destination is not siem reap or Phnom Penh walk around 300 -400 along the road after the border and than take a motorcyle from there to the public bus terminal. The first 200 are controlled by the mafia and they will take you to places you dont want to go for crazy prices

  10. For your stay from the Dec, 21. I'm planning to stay in Thailand till mid Feb, 2011 get a tourist visa in Laos (Vientiane) very easy to do it yourself and if speak a few words of thai this is the best way.

If you are going to work (even if it is for a NGO) you need the right papers for it and you can't do it on a tourist visa legally.

Probably your employer will ask for your work permit and than make the cancellation immigration related process for you, If not you need to do it yourself. Always get a copy of the work permit for yourself before canceling it because you might need that in the future. Once your work permit is canceled you will need to leave the country inmediatly or apply for a extension for a fee

For each other stay in Thailand if you plan to stay longer than 44 days you need to get a tourist visa outside at an embassy or consulate. if you plan to stay 44 days or less a border run to cambodia might be easier and give you what you need as well ( When you arrive by the airport you get stamped with 30 day and when you do the border run you get stamped for 14 days) This is specially true since from March onward tourist visa wont be free anymore

  11. My reccomendation would be not to use them since their service is irregular and also on some weekends they are fully booked in advance

So here is my guide for a do it yourself visa run I just did it a month ago for the 12th time already

    1) Go to century department store) closed to victory monument on the road wich leads to siam/mbk

2.) On the right side of the entrance which has a sky bridge to the BTS Station there is a minivan station.

3.) Go to the minivan station and ask for Aranyaprathet Since they have also vans to Hua Hin and Pattaya they do speak some words of english

4.) Take the van cost as of yesterday was 230 Baht All the van which go to Aranyprathet are new and large. I found that all seats are fine for me but the one with the most legroom is the first row. From you knees to the driver seat you will still have 50cm.

5.) The van will leave you 300m from the border just walk straight and don't listen to anyone. (a lot of scammers there) If you need to ask for the way ask at the banks or 7 eleven

6.) Go trough the Thai border and as soon as you cross the bridge cross over to the right side and you will see a house were you can apply for the visa on arrival cost is 20$ or 1000 Baht (I know it is not the same but it is the scam they have mounted there) If you want you can change money on the way from the van station to the border since you will pass some banks Kasikorn even opens on Saturday and sunday

7.) Once you get your visa continue walking on the right side past a hotel/casino until Cambodian immigration arrival. Stamp in and leave. Cross the roads to the other side

8.) On the other side you have a place called Cambodian immigration departure. Stamp out and walk back to the bridge just before the bridge cross to the other side.

9.) Continue walking and go inside the thai immigration stamp in and go back to the van station

    Note

Last van from the border leaves at 16:50 so you should try to be at the van station in bangkok before 11

Normally the van takes a bit more than 3 hours and at the border it will take you between 50 -70 minutes so you can calculate a maximum of 8 hours

Cost for all together is around 1400 Baht

With jack holiday or other visa run services you will leave bangkok before 7 and return around 5 or 6 the lunch they offer is the crap and their buses are old specially if you compare them to the new minivans used from century to the border. Beside you will pay 600 Baht more. And the only difference is a shit lunch and that they fill out and stamp the paasport at the campodian side for you. Problem is the long queues are on the thai side and since they arrive at the border at the peak time be ready to be in the queue each time for at least 30 minutes. Best time to arrive at the border is after 1 since than all the visarun companies and tour companies have past already and queening time normally is less than 5 minutes

  12. Impossible to get border pass for foreigner since one of the requirement is Thai ID card + House registration. Border passes were created to allow Thai nationals to do one day visits to neighboring countries.

Best you start forgetting about it. Visa cost is only 20 USD and takes 10 minutes. So if you have enough money to gamble you should be able to pay for the visa as well.

  13. You will have to exit Thailand to play in the casinos.

You need to enter & exit Cambodia to be able to re-enter Thailand.

You will need a tourist visa to enter Cambodia.

When you re-enter Thailand, you will get a permission to stay stamp of 60 days for a valid tourist visa or 90 days for a valid Non O, or 15 days for visa exemption if you do not have a live visa. If you currently have a single entry Thailand visa, it will be dead when you exit.

If you get a reentry permit before at immigration (cost is 1000) the underline of the above will not apply to you since your current visa/ extension of stay status will be mantained

  14. By law you are required to have a onward ticket however this law is rarely enforced.

But If you plan on doing Border runs to Poipet (cambodian Border) make sure that for the second visa run you have it because even back to back visa run is not illegal sometimes they do like to check and request the onward ticket. Best way to be save is to buy a Train Ticket Bangkok Butterworth cost is around 1200 - 1400 Baht. After you come back from you run go to the train station and cancel it you will get the money back except a cancellation fee of 250 Baht.

  15. Bangkok is overcrowded everywhere if you dont life far away in the suburbs 2 hours from the city. Aound central Ladprao Union mall there might be some option as well but you are surrounded by very heavy traffic roads and a lot of pollution.

Opposite chatuchak on the other side of the road you only have BTS Parking and goverment buildings.

Behind Chatuchak there are only cheap crap thai apartment for somewhere between 2000 - 4000

    Hope this helps

Yep. I go to the parks often, there's not much there. I think they are building a condo right across from Chatuchak now, also one next to Suan Rot Fai. But you have to wait a few years... Behind the BTS parking and the Thai Department of Transportation there's a quiet under-developed area. It's between Viphavadi and Phoyothin - there's a triangle.

    http://maps.google.c...9,0.049438&z=15

What about over in Bang Su close to the MRT station? That must be cheaper and it's quieter.

I have lived in that area during 2 month. This area around the MRT station Bangsue is a 100% Thai area. When I lived there I didn't see any other expats and absolutely nobody speaks even a word of English so unless you have't been living before in a similar area and you speak some Thai it is not a good choice.

Basically if you don't have a car and you want to have access to MRT or BTS there is not much of choice. Specially if you don't have the money to live closed to one of the main parks in the center

  16. Good for you and your company, Mitker, for having the courage to do things the right way, instead of the easy way. If more people had the means and the courage to do business with integrity in Thailand, corrupt officials and politicians might get the message that it's time to consider doing the same. Every single person and company who chooses this thorny road makes an important point and thus makes it a little bit easier for others. Hats off to you!

Fighting Corruption in Thailand is like the battle of Iwo Jima, Eventually the battle will be won. But there will be a lot of dead on the way. And I don't want to be one of them.

If your business get bankrupt due to fighting against the injustice in Thailand. It will not help you at all that in the far future corruption is eliminated in Thailand and you did a tiny part for this. Because you are still bankrupt.
