I've read somewhere that it's not possible. Maybe I"m wrong but I would not be very surprised knowing the crappy MS OS's.
-
Funny isn't it - Thai + wai = respect..............farang + attitude = wet.
It only lasts for 3 weeks in Pattaya, so no problem
Waiing moron foreigners is not on my agenda. I guess these thais were betting you more than waiing, and then grumbling about all these stupids farangs down there. People like you juste give a bad reputationto other expats who try to have a decent life in this country.
Comprendo ?

I don't agree and you're wrong.

one thing I have noticed is that they like to play a lot of theme music from American TV shows during the show. So far I've heard the theme music from The Andy Griffith show, Love Boat, the Dating Game and today I heard the theme music from The Matrix. What else have you heard?
55555, perfectly reflecting the awful taste of the thai television. 100% crap.

I usually don't tip much, 3-5 bahts for taxis, ~20 bahts in good restaurants though it's not my favourite places, and just few coins for other services.
Why should I tip more than thais ?

relax fellas. last year it only went for a day in patong. its easy to stay away for just a day - considering that many of you dont go near the place on a 'normal' day.
yes, it can be dangerous.
yes, people do stupid things.
but is it fun?
hel_l yeah!
So I'm asking you. Should any tradition have to be dangerous and people allowed to do stupid things ? Should I, as a person not be allowed to go for a nice dinner in dry clothes to allow morons to have fun ? Should we accept these stupid nobrain people sending you to hospital at your own expense coz it's fun to throw full buckets of water on motorcycle drivers ? And so on. NO, I don't accept it and I'll not relax, it's a f****g annoying time, period.
Oh and I forgot, tell me just another one "party time" where it's allowed to abuse others, tell me.

The actual songkran in tourist areas has as much to do with thai traditions as Christmas IMHO. Completely built up by foreign tourists.
Why don't do it at home so we can enjoy the pure authentic traditions here ?
-
Gettalife, mate
Thais enjoy life, even if it seems over the top to you.
LOS is also LOF.......
Land Of Fun.
You could be surprised, when talking with thais who don't live in tourist areas, that most of them if not all think that the songkran you're talking about is a complete mess and dangerous as hel_l. You have to remind that THIS IS NOT SONGKRAN .
-
Usually it's 90 days.
-
It will be a complete pain in the arse. Two days good, 4 days bad. Why do Thais milk every last ounce of pleasure out of every thing? Is there such a thing as "subtlety" in the country?
I second. I just like the authentic style of celebrating songkran that whe have in my remote village.
-
so one day of the year is a complete waste of time and business productivity in this city
did anyone stop to think that the op might actually enjoy songkran the way it is celebrated?
Hum, the problem is that's it's not only one day in the year. To see it one time for one or two days is ok, but that's all. Once you live here it's a nightmare.
Here in Chiangmai we have the longer Thailand's songkran, nearly two weeks and it's nearly impossible to have a normal activity without beeing wet beeing harrased by the stupid tourists and very dangerous to ride a bike. Many morons just stay near the highway and throw entire buckets of water/ice on your face.
I don't live in the city, but going in Chiangmai or in a supermarket during this period is a no no. I buy food and drink for two weeks and stay home in my village where people are less stupid.

It will be a section where all the threads would speak about low speed, hanging connection and bad customer service.
A boring section.

100 Pipers-coke-ice.
The usual low-grade whisky.

Why don't you just buy bottled water ? At least it's cleaner and really not expensive.
I don't trust these filters as you don't know what can be left in the water after filtering. There are so many pwsticides and chemicals thrown in the water here that the amount paid for bottled water is worth it.

I've read the entire thread and I'm scratching my head trying to understand why a married couple would like to live in the same house as their MIL, FIL or S(B)IL. I wonder if any of the poster will agree to live in the MIL house abroad, so why here ?
Considering the ridiculous price for renting a townhouse or appartment in this country, why don't you go in any other thai city (the farer from the family is the better) and make a life on your own without the MIL dragon on your back all the time. Explain to your husband that he is not the 10 years old mamaboy anymore and he can leave his beloved mum in her own dust. And it's not her farang's wife job to be the house's slave. Anyway, it's to your husband to tell her mother to shut up and respect you (his wife), or you have the choice to becoming mad, living a nightmare and maybe finally lose your job, your husband and your dreams.
I'm not a woman, married in Europe 10 years ago with my chinese-thai wife and I've never met MIL, FIL and BIL. <deleted>, her father is divorced from her mother and even if she go to Bangkok she don't visit her. And she told me I would kill her after less than one hour if I meet her, so better to stand as it is. We have a nice house near Chiangmai and she will never be allowed to enter in it.

Thanks, I've installed Everest but it doesn't says much about my graphic card (no model name). Only this:
--------[ Vidéo Windows ]----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [ Standard VGA Graphics Adapter ] Propriétés de la carte vidéo: Description du périphérique Standard VGA Graphics Adapter Identification de la carte VGA Identification du BIOS Chip Rev Type de circuit NVIDIA Type de DAC 8 bit Pilotes installés vga (6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205)), framebuf (6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205)), vga256 (6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205)), vga64k (6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205)) Taille de la mémoire 64 Mo
I've tried the search feature on the Nvidia website and it says that I have to download the driver on the HP website coz this card has some specifical HP instructions. I'm downloading now but this is a huge file (130,51M) I hope it will work as I'm downloading it from the software and Drivers download page for the exact model I have "Compaq Presario V3723AU Notebook PC ".
I just have to cross my fingers and wait as the download speed is terribly slow. At the same time I'll download a soft for the camera who doesn't work yet.

Actually I don't know the graphic card model as it's not indicated anywhere in the documentation included with the laptop. Browsing the compaq and HP websites is a nightmare. I've downloaded many drivers (big files) and none is working properly.
In Mandriva I use the
nvidia71xx-kernel-2.6.22.18-laptop-1mdv - nvidia71xx driver for kernel 2.6.22.18-laptop-1mdv
that give me the correct definition for this card.
the "lspci"command in a Mandriva console return this information for this graphic card: 00:12.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 0531 (rev a2)
But at least the driver does the job to the perfection.

I don't use Windows but there is a free multiplatform software calledThe Gimp for Windows that I use on GNU/Linux to edit, print, capture pictures.
Very reliable and has a lot of features. Fell free to try it.

I am running fully paid and updated XP Pro SP2 on my 2-year old laptop and yesterday I started getting that 'blue screen of death' with mumbo jumbo about saving my system from a catastrophic crash.
I held onto Win2000 till XP SP2 was finally out and tested. I was considering that my baptism in Vista with a new laptop would be similarly road-tested by the masses.
Then I read this thread on how many hours you honest people are wasting, jumping through hoops, trying to get the Vista service pack to do what it ought to in the first place. My mind is made up. I am getting one of those rinky dink little Asus Eee mini-laptops that run on a Linux distro and for traveling, one of them Nokia N810's that use some other non MS o/s.
I was looking for a small laptop one month ago, but the Asus Eee is definitely too small for video and image. Then I bought a Compaq Presario V3000 (14" Thurion dual core) without operating system installed. My idea was to install winXP and Mandriva in dualboot (some apps like Skype doesn't work very well on GNU/Linux yet, at least the camera).
So I installed XP, but was unable to find drivers for most of the hardware in this laptop. It's designed for the crappy Vista OS.
Then I tried Vista, most of the hardware was recoignized, apart some drivers missing that I found on the net, one device that is still unknown to the OS and to me as Windows don't tell you much. About the Nvidia graphic card, I'm still unable to find a driver that will allow me to have a better definition than 1024x768, and on a widescreen its ugly ugly ugly. No need to say that I spend many hours on the net to find a proper driver. Actually 2-3 days.
No problem as in the meantime I had Mandriva installed. I just had to boot on the Mandriva 2008 One LiveCD to test the compatibility of the hardware, press the Install on CD icon and within 25min it was installed on my harddisk. GRUB, the bootloader installed on the MBR allows me to boot Win or Mandriva.
I had only to browse the forum to find a driver for the integrated camera and the wifi (using ndiswrapper and a windows driver found on the net), editing the xorg.conf (graphic configuration text file) I've a nice 1280x768 definition with all the 3D eyecandy and it's running as smoothly as I wanted.
I'll still keep the Vista on the first partition of the 160GB harddisk in hope of better days for this OS but never boot on it (I made only a 12GB partition to host it).
All Mandriva updates were successfull, and the laptop can run for days without hanging or any other problem. It'maybe time for you folks to have a look at the free software as they are more and more user friendly, free as a beer and free as in the GPL.

I've seen some laptop with english keybors only in Panthip Chiangmai (first floor). I don't remember the brand though. So you should be able to find it in BKK as well.
Personally I prefer an english/thai keyboard, could be useful for thai friends.
Warranty ? I think most of the serious brands will repair your laptop in any country within the 1 year warranty time.

Which Linux
in Linux
If you really want to play it safe, and use all power for your application you can always install the lightweight Xfce Windows manager. Xfce does maybe not look as good as KDE or Gnome, but it also uses 50% resources and is still able to do everything you would need from a Windows Manager.Check out the Xfce homepage http://www.xfce.org/
As jackk said, Xubuntu is the Xfce version of Ubuntu.

Microsoft , keep it simple. :D
Reimar do you have some shares by Microsoft Inc ?
And what about legallity in a country where more than 90% of MS OS are copies ? Pathetical hypocrisy IMO.
Anyway I don't care as Mandriva rocks on my computers and MS is in the trashbin.
How To Revert Back From Windows Media Player 10 To Version 9 ?
in IT and Computers

I've found on a french website:
If you have SP2 installed WMP 10 is not visible in the Remove/Add programs window.
In the Remove/Add programs you have to activate the "Show updates" button and then you'll be able to delete WMP 10.
You will then be back to WMP9.
Supprimer WMP 9 et 10
