  1. Pack up and move. No way around this without it only turning very nasty in the end.

Moving is a very expensive and unpleasant experience. The OP also states the village is good. My similar experience lasted six months until they shut their casino down.

It's likely the OP and his wife are not the only ones unnerved by this bar/casino. I'd suggest the OP be patient and set his wife talking (softly, softly) to other neighbours in the village to find out who is connected to who, and the best course of action.

It doesn't need to get nasty as they never need to know who had them shut down. It will definitely take patience though. In my case it was another neighbour who had a connection at the provincial level, even that took six months.

  2. I actually had exactly the same thing happen to me. We went down the investigative route first, turned out the owner of the house being used was a Cop ! so useless complaining, we moved, luckily we were renting too and were able to do that. If I had bought the place I would be a real sick parrot as its still going on there to this day, and that was 8 years ago !!

Pack up, ship out, tell the landlord why, best of luck in your new place.

I too had a similar problem about three years ago, well before the coup, with one of my neighbours. They built a secret casino room inside their house. The noise was terrible.

We live in a Tamboon, under an Amphur in a Changwat. That's sub-district => town => province. My wife and a few other neighbors reported it to the police at the provincial level (no army involved as this was pre-coup) and after about a week the plain clothed police started hanging out right in front of their house wearing white T-shirts, walkie talkies, and shiny black boots. Within a short period their gambling den was closed.

The OP may not have to move.

  3. I think it's great that not only the Chef cared but did something when a plate of food came back to the kitchen (which wasn't smack you).

But he didn't handle it correctly.

btw I thought this was an English language only forum, "go at me"? "strop"?? Wish I understood what you were saying.

Smack me if you like, but any chef in Thailand who cares enough to come out and deal with guests gets 10+ points for a job well done. I'll give him a minus two for lack of English skills and finesse.

The vast majority of restaurants serving tourists in Thailand simply don't care. Even some farang owned restaurants, many of them don't care. I've sent many "Fish and Chips" back to the kitchen because their fish was off. Off means "rotten"... and they did not care.

  4. OP: You've found yourself a good restaurant.

You, (the customer,) returned the plate to the kitchen, or what's more important the wait staff did it, and the chef came out to see if something was wrong. You got excellent service.

I've done the same thing where the kitchen has screwed up. Once I ordered a Caesar salad for 230 baht. It came made of iceberg lettuce. I sent it back. Then my fettuccine Alfredo came with ants on the plate. I sent that back too. The chef did come out, but he was too shy to speak to me. He just sort of lurked around and did and said nothing.

  5. Anybody know of a good professional company in Chiang Mai to deal with a big problem with a septic tank.? I have a huge problem with smell and have tried about everything to get rid of it including emptying it twice, adding EM every 2nd day to digest whatever is blocking and causing the smell. Nothing has worked so I think the problem is within the plumbing and draining line so need a professional to come and check it out... Please anybody???

Smell inside house or outside, near septic tank?

Either way you have a venting problem. Easily fixed.

annabel: Please take note of one of the previous poster's comments on grey water. This grey water should not be going into your septic tank, rather instead drain it into your flower bed or herb garden.

There is no need for a professional company. Find the cap or cover of your septic tank, then have someone fit a piece of blue PVC pipe into-onto the tank and place a Tee joint on the top of it. The Tee joint should be downwind and higher than the nearest window. Then you'll have no smell.

There is no need to hire a western educated English speaking contractor to do a job that should cost you no more than 200 baht. Of course you will have no trouble finding someone who will sell you a new sewer system for 10k+ baht if that's what you decide to do.

To the OP: The only time I ever have to pump our tank is after a big three day party with 60+ guests, or after many days of heavy rain when the ground becomes totally saturated with water. Here I pay 700 baht. Everybody does. It's not Issann.

  6. All passengers on a bike must wear helmets. Even a one day old is a passenger. That is the law. Your assumption is wrong. See the ask the lawyer section for confirmation.

Please don't misunderstand me. I am pro-helmet. However helmets don't really protect one that much in an accident. In many cases the main difference between helmet and no helmet is where does one want to collect their splattered brains? All over the road, or in the brain bucket (helmet). Also the kinetic forces involved, even with the small bike, are sufficient that if the bike flips over the right way one can easily have a severed head, broken neck or broken spine, or crushed head.

Yes helmets are a good idea, I don't disagree, however they are not the save-all panacea some have been trained to believe.

Now what is the solution? Raise the minimum wage in Thailand to 2000 baht per day, that way everyone can finance a new car?

    I don't have the answers.

  7. No, no scam here, modified exhausts are illegal, have been for some time.

Agree. Been doing these checks for sometime in the boonies - main targets, understandably, are Thai teens.

Yes, this is confirmed. They are having a nationwide crackdown on modified exhausts.
