something else to add to the rich tapestry that is stock market trading:
It is called high-frequency trading — and it is suddenly one of the most talked-about and mysterious forces in the markets.Powerful computers, some housed right next to the machines that drive marketplaces like the New York Stock Exchange, enable high-frequency traders to transmit millions of orders at lightning speed and, their detractors contend, reap billions at everyone else’s expense.
These systems are so fast they can outsmart or outrun other investors, humans and computers alike. And after growing in the shadows for years, they are generating lots of talk.

What's new? Almost 2 years that the only place where they give Tourist visa easily is Vientiane in Laos, so I wonder why someone is still going to Penang ?!
riiight. Vientiane is by far the most easiest.
-
I am in this moment in Kuala Lumpur and applied today for a Tourist Visa.
I was told I can pick it up tomorrow. Hopefully no negative surprises.
Flight from Phuket to KL and back ca. 6000 baht and much more healthy than a bus ride.
For me since years KL Thai Embassy works best, it's reliable, effective and fast.
awesome. yeah I bumped into a friendly private taxi driver who doubles as security down there once. for an undisclosed sum (can't remember, probably 100 Malaysian Ringgits) I bought an early number so I wasn't waiting hours! a little game you can play tomorrow: see who joins the queue last yet somehow gets served first!?! how did they do it!?!!

Clarkson should stick to Top Gear only, but as mentioned he needs to be controversial once in a while because he's easily forgotten. He frequently and openly admits to saying one thing, then saying the complete opposite the next week :. everything he says should be taken with a pinch of salt and not taken to heart. He is after all very much stuck in his ways, because the pay is good. The BBC pay him handsomely to be the person he is.

They promoted the no smoking regulation in the UK by saying that it would encourage non-smokers to go out more often. Well there has been absolutely no evidence of that and pubs are currently closing down at a rate of six per day....
It was certainly refreshing to come home and not stink like an ash tray, being able to wear evening clothes more than once. After picking a job deliberately with anti-social hours i'm not going out at the evenings and weekends anymore. Coupled with the downturn there are a lot of people who prefer to stay in and socialise in their own houses now. Setting a minimum price for alcohol will be in hindsight, a good idea because booze has never been relatively cheaper in the UK.

sounds like a simpsons episode, where the milk maffia used rat milk in stead of cow
Homer: [gasps] Cr@p on a crust! [running away] Aaah! They're milking rats! Milking rats!!
Quimby: [to Fat Tony] Rats? I'm outraged! You promised me dog or higher.

For gold to go over $1,000 /oz something will have gone seriously wrong with the dollar, like Congress not authorising the next cash injection.
Wow, what a different view from mine. That is why it is called a market after all.
I expect the gold to really start to go up in price when congress authorizes the next cash injection, and the next, and the next, and the next...
I was learning about investing in physical metals 4 years ago but only recently did something about it. I learned that all money is debt based and currencies are actually being devalued as time goes on. Money only has value because WE give it value because we give our time (work) for money. It's only ever worth what we (and the 'free' market) thinks it's worth. Electronic Gold traded on the stockmarkets of the world has been oversold. I believe I am correct in saying there is more Electronic Gold being traded on these markets than exist on the planet!
-
.....just wish I had waited a few weeks and bought the gold when the price was 11k or so, then it might be useful to hang onto longer term considering the potential volatility of the US dollar and baht in the current economic climate... but since I bought it at 16 or so psychologically I feel the desire to unload it.
Last year 16,000 was when gold peaked at $1,000 /oz that is a huge psychological barrier to break because markets trade around round figures. For gold to go over $1,000 /oz something will have gone seriously wrong with the dollar, like Congress not authorising the next cash injection. I wasn't quick enough and bought and sold at the wrong time without checking historic graphs. Now i've got a regular habit of checking kitco and goldtraiders.

I've been scanning newspaper and magazine archives related to Thailand dating from 1946 to the present, and the reported decline has been constant since at least then. Every other year or so I come across an article about the decrease in the number of males ordaining and in the number of monks overall. Sometimes the numbers don't agree. In fact I can't remember seeing figures in the millions at all. About 10 years ago I remember a total figure of currently ordained monks estimated at 400,000.
I'm not sure if reliable statistics exist, as not all monks are registered with the Dept of Religious Affairs. That there is a decline seems obvious and it seems there is a parallel decline in organised religious practice all over the world.
Now I haven't been reading articles since 1946 but could the decline in organised religion world wide just be a % and not the number of people practising? the number of people practising could stay roughly the same but as a percentage this would be less.

Inclined to believe them, they lost ALOT of face in this fiasco as foreign tourists and hi-so's alike were hurt and killed.

most definitely! that is a complete meal in its self or a large snack.
Humble but filling; Fried Rice. my wife makes a great fried rice with tender chicken and broccoli. In Thai "Cow Pat" + (Chicken=Guy/Gai, Pork=Moo, Crab=Pooh, Prawn=Goon). Some places serve American Fried Rice, this means it has a fried egg on top.Since I'm vegetarian my, existence centered around "Cow Pat Jeh" the Jeh can be interpreted as vegan(!) so i'd add "Sai Kai" on the end indicating a preference for egg.
be sure to say "Sawadee Khrap" to this dude.

As far as I've seen in 19 years visiting here, Thailand has no special claim to moral rightousness.
As for being sexual in a temple: I went through a phase, at a Yogi retreat in N. California, where I led 'satsang' one evening per week. After some satsangs, one or another young lady would stay behind, and we'd engage in some illicit behavior near the altar. Some of my fondest mammaries ...err, excuse me, some of my fondest memories stemmed from those times. There were sculptures of Krsna and Rama and Tara overlooking our debauchery, but I rather doubt the spirits of those deities frowned upon us.
heh, fair play to you sir.
The Simpsons: The Computer Wore Menace Shoes
Marge: Homie!
Fake Homer: (Speaking with a German accent) Marge, honey, Fraulein, I'm home!
Marge: You're not my husband!
Fake Homer: Jah, please forgive my unexplained two week absence. To make it up to you we will go out to dinner at a sensibly-priced restaurant, then have a night of efficient German sex.
Marge: Well, I sure don't feel like cooking.
sorry. I just thought of that simpsons episode on reading the article!
