  1. It is easy to understand the amusement of the occupants of the car behind. They were probably bought up watching the slapstick comedy shows that are everywhere in Thailand - the ones where nobody has to think except to listen to the boings, the slaps and the canned laughter telling the audience when to laugh. When the Knobhead hits the bitumen that would have been a laugh too.

Plus, trees grow.  Root structures eventually compromise the safety and stability of nearby roads, sidewalks, buildings, wires and put everyone in the area at risk.  It's a shame when beautiful trees need to come down.  But if it's either a tree coming down, or risking someone being killed by the damage the roots cause, I'd go with cutting down the tree just about every time.  Just like the rest of the world.

Perhaps with better training in arboural studies /landscape architecture/horticulture/urban design or any of the other  cross disciplinary areas of knowledge, the right decisions could be made taking into consideration the species of the tree ,the location, soil types and other subterranean conditions and services in ground plus having a look at what the rest of world is doing in tree management and urban design.  A quick trip/junta down to Singapore  to stay in the finest of hotels for a while may be suggested or invite one of their experts up to BKK  to lay some strategies down if they can handle the blow to their egos to find out other cities are able to do it better  and safer without too much bother.

  3. I find it very hard to defend Bangkok as an  city in its pursuit to be an international city of merit with this hillbilly attitude to the environment and to attractive streetscapes . We have seen this similar attitude  in Pattaya along Beach Road , and whilst cities like Singapore and Hong Kong attract not only tourists but international business what do these cretins do with their approach to livable cities despite restraints like climate and population. Over the past 40 years i have seen some improvement in Bangkok's city scape and urban environment but it is slowly being undone by not only the removal of these trees and gardens but also the assine approach to tree management. Shit if i could have got my arboricultural knowledge in 6 days instead of gaining it through study and work experience then i would be a happy boy. It just can't be done unless you want diseased trees or desolation. Absolutely no scientific thought here regarding climate change etc, just blind adherence to superstition and living in a world of unreality. TIT!

  4. It will interesting where the BiB set up there checkpoints , in that will they be close to a train or bus station so the passengers in the pick-up tray will be off-loaded to continue their journey by other transport or will they be left at the Crossroads after the fine is   paid or will they be sent on their way to the next fine collecting checkpoint. If the passengers are allowed to continue then it is merely fund raising for the BiB and not an learning exercise for the Thais in road safety.

Many of Thailand's poorer people use pick-up transport to return to the provinces saving money on buses and trains. But when accidents occur people travelling unsecured in the back of the open trucks are often killed and injured.

It is total bulls**t  the saving on train or bus - the cost of fuel from BKK to say Korat would be similar although it may be shared 6 or 8 times according to the number ofs and there were no freeloaders , babies, children etc. Then in the event of an accident there are the emergency and the ongoing hospital and medical costs and all too often the funeral costs to pay the temple plus the Tamboon. Nobody really wins when it comes to saving a few baht .

  7. Very sad indeed. Hope it wasn't a member of this forum as there have been a few Aussie ex coppers on here.  In a perverse way he took a admirable stance not wanting to be a burden on anybody else . Shows immense bravery to do it the way he went - altho some may disagree. I must admit admiration for him  doing it  because ,perhaps,  one day soon , many of us  will have to  face up to deciding when we have had enough pain , illness and disability that we have had enough and be in a position to say goodbye to all of those we have loved .

Assisted euthanasia is currently being debated in some Australian State parliaments at the moment . Strong arguments on both sides.

  8. I thought most  airports around the world  were installing facial recognition technology This way they can set up a camera in the arrival corridors and  scan all passengers before they even get to the immigration checkpoint and quietly remove them airside before they actually enter Thailand. Maybe it is a bit more complicated as to what jurisdiction (international or Thai) they would be charged under though.

Or perhaps there are no facial recognition systems available at a good price including the obligatory kickbacks .

  9. My ex  has had both vehicles  whilst she has been in Australia . The servicing and parts on the Honda were incredibly expensive . As a SUV it was pleasant, nothing out of the ordinary but nothing bad. She then bought a X Trial ( the first model)  and now has upgraded three times since . She loves them. My son has one and is thinking of buying another one. The X Trial was far more able as a vehicle to take down bush tracks and into the wilder areas  as well as long interstate trips and city driving. It carries more payload and is roomier inside . The X Trial was also less thirsty for fuel and there are diesel versions available if you are lucky enough to find one second hand. I also judge the quality of a vehicle by how many of the earlier models are still being driven and there are not a lot of the older CRVs around but many of the X Trials particularly the first models with the speedo cluster in the middle of the dash..Incidentally they feel much more stable and comfortable than a Fortuner on the road if that is an appropriate comment.  Yes , i would endorse the X Trial .

  10. Cash is King in Asia. Do you know any Asian (not only Thai) who does not prefer cash in any business transaction .

The employees probably would not be happy having to go down to the bank to collect their wages rather than getting it in their hot little hands at the end of their shift or last shift for the week . Plus to place money into the employee's bank accounts they will be keeping traceable records that  the Government , bank and perhaps  the employee's spouse may access. Also many Thais who have debts like to keep their income secret to keep their creditors at bay .The employees  probably like to tax their own cash in hand before they take the remainder home to the family. To be paid any other way is just too problematic.

  11. A lot of my music is now in the FLAC format and there seems to be a huge improvement in quality compared to Mp3 in particular, but i still don't know if ,or how , i could put it on a flash drive ,or even hard drive, and play it without having VLC , or other, installed program installed somewhere in the system . My brain does not compute if this is possible.

At the moment when i drive, i drive without music and i just listen to the wind and the road noise, the rattles of this vehicle that seem to increase daily , the clatter and arguments inside my brain , the curses of the other "better" drivers and their angry horns and the dominating noise of  my wife telling me how to drive. Theoretically can life get any better than this?

  12. It drives me absolutely batty all those bells, gongs, whistles and canned laughter that are on Thai television shows - something not unlike Buster Keaton or any other silent comedy show from 100 years ago. I must admit i started getting bored with that slapstick humour very early on in life but each to their own and we do need laughter and amusement in our lives . Even my step kids sit at the dinner table ,or preparing meals ,are with their mobile phones transmitting these shows from the web of the Thai / Japanese cartoon shows or the Thai slapstick comedy shows. It seems if there are Thais in your circle you just have to learn to live with it the best  way you can. You cannot change them .

Im going though back cancer now and i cant control my emotions.Taking about old time with mates or talking about what is going to happen to my family.my sis and bro inlaw come tomrrow, tears al round.I cant help it,it just happens

Mate, i know how you feel - i just went thru chemo and a stem cell transplant about 12 months ago and the doctor and medical staff warned me about the emotional upheaval. There was crying, and depression ,rage and anger, fear and concern about my family if i didn't make it but i also had some quite warm and wonderful times with my family and the wonderful staff. Also remembering old friends and old times too and sometimes the pain killing drugs made me forget everything too . Any life challenging event like a terminal illness will drag up the suppressed emotions . No shame there.

  14. Obviously a big sooky mummies boy who if he doesn't get his way he throws a tantrum . Maybe he thinks he is a man but he will never get to that level of maturity. I bet you if his mummy gave him food he didn't like he would be the type to throw , either at her, or on to the floor. Then his mummy  would clean up his mess and would pacify him with a reward like sweets  and so reinforce those behavioral traits. Thailand , and many other places  are full of mummy's boys - the only honest to themselves  are those that become lady-boys  and even they have massive behavioral problems.
