  1. I would agree with Bookman that "The Road" is hard to beat for depressing except yesterday i was flicking through the channels and i came across it dubbed in Thai and that is even more depressing..

Also 'Betty Blue' the French film about the husband watching his beautiful wife descend into mental illness and not being able to do anything about saving her I have only been able to watch it once in this lifetime.

Life is beautiful is both incredibly funny and incredibly sad. Recommended for both reasons.

    • Apocalypse Now - Reflux has a clearer ending with the ramblings of Brando otherwise the first and shorter version is good
    • The Quiet American - both of them should be watched but i also agree with SC the later has the benefit of hindsight.
    • Indocine - the French film dealing with the colonial French period. Beautiful film and puts the later events into some type of perspective.

  2. I once had a friend of a friend and his second cousin was only a part time crim and that was mainly when he forgot to take his " calm down " medication in the morning. Problem is when he goes to Thailand he forgets that prostitution is illegal in Thailand and then he has the dilemma of if he pays the girl he is committing and abetting a criminal act and because he is only part time in criminal activity he prefers to think she is his girlfriend for the two hours.

And sometimes he gets his " happy pills" medications mixed up with viagra which makes his moods more variable and more prone to mixing with criminal elements in his hotel room . What should he do ?

  3. Along with correct wai, what is the protocol when walking into the Emporium or your hotel or else where and the doorman salutes you . I know you don't salute him back but do you just ignore him, nod your head at him, smile at him or pull a silly face at him to see if he will loose his composure.

One of the great questions of good manners i have never found out.

  4. Problem in keeping old buildings is the relationship between the buildings and their inhabitants . Ghosts and spirits . I am assured by a lot of Thais , and other people too , that they do exist and they form attachments to these buildings . That is the last thing we need , more homeless ghosts jumping out at people in the middle of the night because they have no where to live.

This is one of the main reasons that the Thais like to live in new houses and it is easier to sell a new house than an old one. However it seems the more educated Thais are beginning to see therelationship between old historically important buildings and their culture.

  5. First time i came to Thailand many years ago i saw a not so youngish lady open a beer bottle using just the muscles in her nether parts in one of those upstairs places where an exit fee is required. Amazed me , but just between us i was told that there is a metal bottle opener inserted before she hobbles on stage..Anyway, That is why it is sometimes useful to have a bottle opener lying around even if she does spend her time watching stupid Thai soapies.

  6. Restaurants can hope the breakfast customers will come back for dinner as they become familiar with the" quality" just as an "2 for 1 " introductory offer works. Notice these are usually only available on the slow days or have exclusions like drinks (high profit on drinks) . Macdonalds or Burger King use the 20 baht mini burgers or 5 baht (or whatever cost they are) ice creams to get the customers in though the door then they will up-sell to larger size or whatever. It is all about getting the customer in though the door.
