  1. Language is ever changing with common usage. Rules that apply in one decade do not necessarily apply in the next.

I'm English and speak English, but I think that it is a really stupid language that has evolved for the snobs to look down on the "uneducated".

    Cough

    Bough

    Enough

    Though

How can the "ough" be pronounced totally differently for these 4 words...

    Because of their origins?.... :o

Rough-coated, dough-faced, thoughtful ploughman John Gough strode through the streets of Scarborough; after falling into a slough on Coughlin road near the lough (dry due to drought), he coughed and hiccoughed, then checked his horse's houghs and washed up in a trough.

    14 different pronunciations there! :D

I love the English language with all its craziness. I hate what the Americans are doing to it just because they are too lazy to learn it the correct way.

  2. I must admit I was silly enough to book Mr T once for an airport trip and he failed to turn up – never again.

Mr T is useless and cannot be relied upon - this "no show" has happened to several TV members if you check back through the posts.

If you check back you will see it is MR TOOM who is unreliable!

I use MR T all the time and so do my friends and he has never let any of us down.

  3. Batter value at Phyathai Hospital in Sriracha, for 3800 Baht.

    Barry

Last year I got brochures from Phyathai and BPH to compare the two, and found BPH to be better than Phyathai for the particular tests I was interested in having.

Also, you would not get much for 3800 baht!

  4. I had all the major tests done before xmas and was quite satisfied. My buddy runs a huge diagnostics company in America [on the stock market] and i sent him the results for a second opinion and the doctors were amazed at the cheap prices and thought the doctors had proper conclusions. Compared to the west, a good deal. I found them very professional, friendly and knowledgeable. thumbs up from me

:o:D:D from me, too. I had the check up last year and couldn't fault anything - will be having it again this year and hopefully for many years to come!

  5. I had the full check-up at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital a few months back and was extremely impressed with the service provided. I was treated with the greatest respect and everything was carried out in a most caring and professional manner. I could not fault anything.

  6. Go to Control Panel > Power Options and check under Turn Off Monitor what the time value is. This will cause the screen to go black after that timeout period expires.

Hey, thanks for that Tywais. Problem solved. :o

  7. My screensaver is set for 10 minutes which, after screensaver, used to automatically revert to desktop, that was before I took my laptop in for extra memory. I collected my laptop the other day from the shop and now find that after 10 minutes it will go on to screensaver, and then after 5 minutes of screensaver I get a black screen and it will not automatically revert to desktop. I then have to bring it back manually and find that I have a very faint desktop for about 10/15 seconds.

Not sure whether this is a problem or not, does anybody know?

    Thanks.

  8. Also, you say you have both State and private pensions, plus any interest from money in The Nationwide BS.

What you need to be asking yourself is why you havent got a letter from the UK embassy confirming your income from those, and using THAT towards your financial requirement for visa purposes. You could then reduce, or even do away with the need to have 800,000TBH in a Thai bank (which is earning you next to nothing interest wise) depending on the figures of said pensions/interest

Also, i cant understand people who live somewhere other than UK, but STILL pay UK tax on any interest. Move savings offshore and go "non domicile" and get 20% more by not paying tax on it. I would also look into getting pensions paid gross as well. You get nothing FROM the UK, so why pay INTO it? :o

    Penkoprod

I had the 800,000 baht in the bank long before I became a pensioner and never got round to changing it - I think now is the time to do it. The tax paid on interest earned in the UK I claim back at the end of every tax year.

  9. I am not very good at understanding the problems associated with the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, so here's my situation and I hope somebody can put my mind at rest.

I have 800,000 baht in The Bank of Ayudhya which is for my retirement visa. I have a bit of money tucked away in The Nationwide B.S. in the UK and also my State Pension and Private Pensions are paid into the Nationwide which I use to live on here in Thailand.

I am relatively unconcerned about the Nationwide, but should I be worried about the money in The Bank of Ayudhya? It's not a lot of money to some, I know, but to me it is.

Can any financial wizard out there give me some advice?

    Thanks

  10. But do you think an ambulance would find you if you quoted this address?

You seem to assume an ambulance would come to your house.

    TH

I have seen a couple of ambulances in the area, so I assumed they were going to someone's house.

  11. Does anyone understand how the address system works here, or more importantly, do the Thai people understand it?

My address is ??/?? Moo ? I do not have a Soi number. I receive all my mail, so at least the Postman understands it.

If I needed to call an ambulance or a fire engine etc. do you think they would be able to find me from my address details?
