  1. For me, the best practice has been to buy very early hoping to snatch one of the low fares before the plane fills up. I always want the best flying times so there's not much chance of a cheap seat opening up at the last minute. One thing that's not mentioned is that if the airline knows who you are, it may jack up the price. One day, I tried many times to buy a ticket at the price quoted on KAYAK only to have the airline increase the price a lot once I had signed in with my FF number. Finally, I figured out a way to purchase the ticket before I entered my FF number and got it at the KAYAK price.

  2. RT@waanspeaking RT @nikhon_: (A) red shirt leader said on stage in Korat he/she was gratified by attack at PDRC Trat stage. Tida had to stop him/her.

    Nothing to add...

Anyone know specifically who this was?

    Bad PR for Thida that

I disagree, I think that her stepping-in & stopping the speaker, shows that she hasn't quite sold-out totally, and still has a few vestiges of decency left ?

I recall she used to declare, she was a Red-Shirt but no great fan of the Big Boss himself, wonder what she thinks these days ?

In that video, a policeman was on stage and basically said the casualties were a payback. It was sick to see them clapping for this comment. But Thida stepped in and told him not to say that and that violence is not acceptable. Another guy stepped in and apologized for the policeman, saying he was just upset at all the policemen who have been injured. A good gesture on Thida's part.

As for thaivisa members condoning violence? It won't be allowed. A few members are now on long and/or permanent posting holidays due to this. Please show some respect.

  4. What is it about drifters who visit a country for a few weeks and then decide to live and retire there because they 'loved' it.

Escape artists and folk who can't afford to live in their own country without working seem to be the demographic.m

Not true. We enjoy the different aspect of another country and find it exciting and interesting. Many of us can easily to afford to live back home. Just don't want to.

  5. I've never been to Ecuador, but looked at it seriously before Thailand became irresistible. I've hear crime in Quito is bad (worse in the southern city of Guayaquil) and have read of wild tales of the difficulty of just getting out of the airport without being victimized. Yeah, that may be overblown. But the roads are terrible and the government restricts the importation of used cars, which combine to mitigate the cheap Venezuelan gas. Spanish would definitely be easier than learning Thai, but that's the benefit of being attractive to Thai women. I get along pretty well in Chiang Mia despite only being able to count to 4 and saying thank you.

Crime in Quito is bad. We went to the main square knowing pickpockets where all over. We were super alert. Guess what? They still slashed the pockets of 2 of our fellow travelers. A couple who were holding hands the whole time trying to avoid this. During 3 months of backpacking around S. America, I'd say well over 50% of the travelers I met had something stolen from them one way or another.

My backpack was rummaged on the flight into Quito. Luckily, all I had in there was t-shirts and underwear!! 55555

We took a bus from Quito down to Cuenca. I thought the front 2 seats next to the driver looked great! Wonderful view. At one of the pit stops, we were talking with some locals and found out why nobody was sitting in them. They call them suicide seats.

Spanish is mandatory in CA and SA. No way around it. Most don't speak any English. Unlike here. But yes, Spanish is way easier to learn than Thai. At least you can read things.

  6. 5555 Little Feat. Wow. That brings back memories. Played in a country rock back in the mid 70s. Lots of Little Feat, Marshall Tucker, Allman Brothers, Charlie Daniels, etc. Great stuff.

Never been to Guatemala, but recently visited Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. We absolutely loved it. Relatively cheap, but COLD winters! Beautiful countries.

Cuenca, Ecuador, is a very small town. Great outdoor activities, but not a lot of things to do other than that. And crime is definitely on the rise. The weather isn't that great, especially if you are use to shorts and t-shirt living here.

P.S. As that article states, be careful with anything International Living prints. They are incredibly biased, and are into the real estate game big time.

  7. For me I will return home (Is Texas a foreign country? smile.png ) No more dealing with Immigration, cheap grain fed steaks and reasonable wine prices smile.png

I'm thinking its preferable to split my time between the US and several countries smile.png

Gotta think outside the box here...

Yes, Texas is it's own "country"! 555555

Your comment about staying in 2 different places is what we are also looking at. There are many places I'd like to experience, but the weather is only good part of the year. Kinda same with here in Thailand. Would be nice to be away during the hot months.

  8. We also talk about this all the time. Not worried about Thailand collapsing, but just thinking about some other place for a different experience.

We love Spain, but have only spent about a month there. Croatia is interesting. Might get a bit cold for me, especially the Northern part.

Colombia is an up and coming place. We loved Chile, probably liked Argentina even better. Uruguay is quite nice. Ecuador was a bit too impoverished for me, but a nice place.

So far, with all it's flaws, we like Thailand best. But won't be here forever.

  9. Asoke at 13:00 today (saturday).

Recorded speech and recorded crowd sounds playing... nobody at all except people passing through

Sent from my GT-N7000 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Was there last night about 9PM. Maybe 200 people, 400 if you included the vendors, guards and protest tourists. Suk seems to be permanently blocked with sandbags at the entrances to their site.

  10. In favor of Thailand, that beacon of human rights?

Ah, yes, the old search without a warrant thingy going on over there. The constitution in shambles. I made the right decision canceling my US citizenship 13 years ago.

Never once have I been harassed by Thai customs at the airport, so I'll take LOS over any western country. Besides, the idea that a western country has human rights is laughable.

Maybe the vast majority never have a problem, but that is probably down to chance and the numbers going through most airports.

I've never been hassled anywhere, and have visited almost 90 countries now. But, if you bring in over the limit cigs or booze here, and are caught, you're in for a major hassle and a significant loss of cash.

I take that back. The land border crossing between Syria and Israel was no fun. Everything gets searched and inspected closely. And it's not done with a smile on their face!

  11. There is another station on 3rd road, just North of Klang by a few hundred meters on the ocean side of the road. Direct service. Very nice.

If you don't mind, the best bet is to go to Morchit and change there. Much quicker.

  12. Rule 6 in my passport tells me that it is not my property but her majesty's government in the united kingdom and that I have to take good care of it and not give it to any unauthorised person. With the passport being very easy to damage and wear out if you take it out with you everyday of the year for 10 years then you would not be looking after your passport as instructed. The cost of renewal is very expensive and with a lot of visa problems it is not worth the problem of a small fine once in a blue moon for not having the real one to show. So I have a copy in my wallet laminated and also my Thai driving licence. I also have been living here 14 years and so far no police have asked me for my passport but if they did I would show my copy and my Thai licence if that was not good enough then I would ask my wife to come to the police station with my passport. I will never carry my passport.

    Regards

    Scotsman

Good recommendation if you are where you live. But if traveling around the country, it's best to have your passport on you. I carried my passport with me daily during my many years of traveling around the world. My passport looks well used, but it's still in great shape.

  13. This looks like a great deal. I've got no relation to this company. If nothing else, the pics show you an idea of what N. Vietnam is like. I went about 12 years ago. Due for another visit!!!!

Oh please, doesn't The Nation feel embarrassed to write such lie?

How can they even begin to call this "peaceful demonstrations"??

No, the source for that part was The Nation. Please don't wrongly attribute information without checking first. Especially as you're admin. Thanks

Read the OP. Two sources are quoted. One is the AFP.

  15. Drinking tap water in Thailand!??!?! Since when it is safe? RIP guys cheesy.gif

Safe in Bangkok if one can smell the chlorine. Lots of people do!

That's one reason I stopped using tap water to make my coffee when I lived in Bangkok. It just didn't taste right.

The Thai news said this was due to inferior equipment being used. As normal, they pocketed money that should have been used to buy better equipment. As reported by the Thai local news.
