  1. Sure, great life experience, I think that's why most people do it, but then the chances are that your skills will stagnate, and you'll loose market competitiveness however you will also have Asian experience and memory's.  I'm kinda guessing some of this and am hoping someone else can help fill in the gaps.

I've noticed that there is a strong caste system in Asia between country's, and so this is one reason why I asked this question, but perhaps not visible until you look beneath the surface.  Aka the interesting parts about studying culture.

So work in Thailand, and then work for a Hong Kong company for example and you may expect a little/lot of hassle?

What about Western country's perception of working inside Asia, is it a positive one?

Are we talking of 3 years maximum before your employability starts to go downhill, more or less?  Or is this all rubbish ..

    :o

  2. Hi, I was wondering what the issues of having worked in Thailand for several years and then moving onto another country.  Would/what issues may this raise and how can they be dealt with?

I'm just thinking ahead a little.  Do some country's look down upon Thailand for example and so won't employ people from there, even farang's?  (I hope this is not the case).

  3. Also along this line of thought.

How about a picture gallery, where either pictures of various places are taken and put online and/or users can take pictures of various places, once moderated, can be put online.

Sometimes, it makes more sense if you see a picture of someplace or company or whatever if you can see a picture of it.

    Like a reality snapshot.

  4. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, just I can see this place becoming the prime Thai expat website very quickly if it meets user needs.

Having used these forums for many years on different systems, it's always nice when you have lots of users to split it up into more relevant subject areas.  It also means I have to write lots more messages, because I find this a fascinating culture and area.

Off topic posting happens with all forum message systems.  Sometimes people make an effort and sometimes not.  Whether it's intentional or not, I personally dont think matters, what does is that someone posts.

These are of course, just my thoughts, but I really like the idea and feel of this place, of course it's upto you how you want to mould it.  Hope i'm not being a solo voice here anyone else agree or disagree?

  5. I've applied for many jobs off jobsdb.co.th, good website for jobs, very poor response from most employers on there, including everyone from the large multi-nationals to the small companies.  Believe me, i'm pretty talented too so it's not that.

My list so far has 32 related Thai IT jobsites and agency's.  I've also got a seperate list of company's in Thailand who have recruitment positions on their website.  It's the approach that they advertise their job and you can apply for it, that seems not to work very well there.  My theory is twofold, in that the family approach like the "older Chinese family work practise style" is one reason.  You have to be introduced to the firm through an existing employee.  Second is that Asia has fallen head first into the IT certification game, because they don't understand experience is more valuable than certification because in Asia, face is everything, even if it means your technically crap, you have the pieces of paper that make you look good.  Re - read that.

I think a degree is mandatory for a work permit too, although i'm not 100% sure on that.  Would dearly love to know if this is true or not as it would clarify a few things for me.

Bangkok Post also has a IT recruitment section.

The odds are stacked pretty high against farang from applyinhg from remote.

However, and this is the good section if your paying attention.  Skills such as CCIE's (Cisco Certified Internet Engineers) and SAP people can walk over this, because their in worldwide supply.  From what little I know, SAP is boring as hel_l though.  Cisco's are great areas to get into.

  6. This place is great.  I've noticed that several people, myself included have many topics that are quite interesting and a good conversation point.  Suggestions for forums include ...

Finance (I'm curious about Thai shares, banks, etc)

Jobs (this should be discussed inside out)

    Relationships (important people be realistic)

    Language (tips, language schools)

Technology (There seems to be more tech than people realise)

    Any more?

  7. Out of interest, does anyone on here work in the IT industry in Thailand?  Care to tell us about it?  There are many questions I have.  Did you come over and look for work, how long did it take, did you try an Agency.  BTW I tried serveral reputable Agency's in Bangkok from outside the country via email and got 0 response, that's pretty awful.  How did you go about it.  What was the response from the company like.  Was the VISA/etc situation forthcoming etc...
  8. Can I suggest some ideas.. all would be nice, it's such an important topic

    * A javascript webpage whereby you enter the gross value and it gives you an exact net amount.

    * A downloadable Excel spreadsheet

    * A chart of Gross and Net income, so you can quickly get an idea of what's going on with your income on a webpage.

    :o

  9. I noticed another discussion on taxation and wondered what the actual figures are for taxation in Thailand.

I have found the Ministry of Finance website, but have yet to find actual taxation rates.

    http://www2.mof.go.th/

Ultimately, i'd like to create a chart that says income x gross, income y net.

    Thanks
