  1. You got a certificate to show that wood was obtained legally. Does that meen the wood was obtained legally or does it mean that you care where the wood comes from? Do you beleave a certificate means anything? I sell teak furiture and I have certificates that say the wood is plantation teak and that you can check with the Indonesian forestry organisation Pirum piritany (spelling?) as to its source. I cannot say this isn't true, but how many dollars would it take to get an official to stamp a peice of paper

? About 10. If its real good Teak it would probably of come from Burma. They are chopping down 100 trees to get to the one good one there. Then the money goes you know where.

Anyhow just thought it funny that you mentioned a certificate showing authenticity in Thailand. I will toodle off now.

I think you'll find that certificate could come in handy if you are moving the furniture in the border areas.

I was interested in some furniture at a Cambodian border crossing. I was travelling with some border police (family friends) and they advised me to buy my items on the Thai side even though it looked the same and was a higher price as it came with a certificate and wouldn't be confiscated if stopped as I transported it home.

Very good point that! Think you might have to pay more than$10 to get away with that one.

  2. I use virgin media 2 meg fibre optic broadband. I am dowloading at a whopping 200 kbs right now. I can also stream short bits of smut if I so desire. Problem is I am in crappy England and cant wait to get back to CM and the rubbish internet and useless customer services.

  4. Television just announced that Friday, May 23 until June 2, the annual or bi-annual teak furniture sale starts in Chiang Mai. We got a great bed there, two years ago, with a certificate that the wood was obtained legally. The show/sale is usually held behind the Tesco-Lotus on the superhighway on the north side (northeast corner of town, west of the river) Sale might last ten days. Some of the tents offer huge beds, dining tables, wardrobes, etc., from rustic to fancy styles.

  5. I'm googling "Magic Step" furiously as we speak...as in the infamous Spicy catch you out step, or is this some esoteric reference to some gnostic cult excercise.....?

As in the catch you out step yes. It really is Magic! shhhh. Its under "spicys magic step. shhhhhh!

  6. I was there a couple of weeks ago, Nice venue inside, lots of exposed brick, couple of huge projection screens. The DJ booth is basic - a bench from memory. The DJs the night I was there were ok and mixing up some nice tunes - not standard CM hiphop thank god. There's to much white lighting and lots of lighting spill from the bar area. The drinks are more expensive than Spicy 1. Also there is a 100 Bt cover charge and you get a shot of cheap Tequila at the door.

I was there on a Saturday night and it was fairly quiet. Has lots of potential but needs some decent lighting.

A smoke machine, better lighting and a couple of lazers would make it a nice small club.

Does it have a Magic Step?

  7. Chiang Mai Grandview: 143 bht for lunch (11.30 - 1.00) is the best value I know. Not up to the quality of the nearby Amari but very good all the same.

Khun Churn (soi 16, Nimmenhaemen Rd) has a daily veggie buffet for 85 bht which is always good.

Everyone who has ever tried veggie food and thought it was too bland or missing something should eat at Khun Churn. I use to feel that way about veggie food before I ate there. Its also a really fantastic looking new restuarant. Somewhere to take a date and impress them?

I love fresh, well prepared vegetarian cuisine. That's why I don't eat at Khun Churn. Everything there tastes bland and like it's missing something (quality ingredients). A much better place is PunPun at the back of Wat Suan Dok. Really, really fresh, delicious, imaginative food.

Wow. Your the first person I have evr heard say a bad thing about Khun Churn. Beleave me I have eaten there with over 30 different people. I also like Pun pun. There crispy flower salad is fantastic. When was the last time you ate at Khun Churn? Bland is a word I would never associate with Khun Churn. Thinking about it you are having a laugh. The ingredients are fresh and of good quality.

Anyone else think the same as Him? Meet ya round the back of the bike shed for a punch-up after maths

You can't say the food in the Pub is expensive and then try and plug your own Guesthouse. The food is not expensive. That is coming from someone who has eaten there. Have you? Your reasons for it not being a good place to stay are POOR! Are you a Thai politician?

One Very good reason for staying at the Pub would be to have a Sunday lie-in and get up for a magnificent Sunday Roast.

  10. Fantastic food, amazing portions. If they hav'nt already could someone tell them they are charging the wrong price for there canned cider. Think it was about 120baht when I went there. You can't even buy it in Ring sting for that little. I did mention it when I was there after 3 or 4.

If you are thinking about going to eat there? Don't think. Just go! Its a real treat!

  11. I'm sorry our friends child gas has lost their bicycle. I'm just wondering if that reward is so generous that someone may steal another similar bicycle in order to collect it. Best of luck.

Frankly, I don't really think anyone would do something so stupid for 2000bht

You wanna bet on that? 2000 baht maybe?

  12. The backpackers hate the package tourists, the package tourists hate the sex pats, the long term expats hate the short term expats, the non teachers hate the teachers, the teachers hate the backpackers etc.

Ok, quite a generalisation, and of course not everyone is like that, but overall I think we can safely say a lot of farang hate other farang here for the stupidest reasons.

Even on this forum you can be ridiculed for meeting your wife in a bar, or living in too small an apartment, teaching English, your choice of holiday destination (think Phangan/Pattaya), choosing to eat farang food daily instead of Thai food etc.

The farang that are generally most negative towards other farang usually do so out of some need to compete against them and/or to try to win brownie points from the Thais.

Very well put Burman. I concur with all.

I wonder what the need to compete is then? Self doubt perhaps?

Its a man thing. You will find that most of these competing types are men. Woman generally dont get involved in such nonsense. There far to busy cooking dinner and cleaning.

  13. The thing is when you've been in Thailand for a long a time you can see how you were when you first came. It can be really emabarassing to see some one in a Chiang vest and fishermans pants squatting whilst stroking a soi dog. Now I never did anything like that!!!! Well I never stroked a Soi dog. I also never wore very tight, short Adidas shorts displaying my skinny milk white legs and often flashing some spiders when sitting down.

So taking the pee and mocking the tourists and new -bees is a way of forgetting (reminding) how not to behave.

  14. Do not know about the Government being silly, but when The Thai Government get wind of what the UK Government announced yesterday, it will be the end of the end for all 3G mobiles. The UK Gov, in their wisdom, have announce a new law that all mobiles that take pictures/videos will be banned , as they have been used by thugs to take pics and footage of beatings of both adults and youths.

Not doubting you but that sounds very hard to believe. Do you have a link for the banning of camera mobiles in the UK?

You know why it sounds hard to beleave? Because it is a 1st class peice of Bull. There are about 30 million of them at least in Britain. The government sold the license for 3G netwoprks for Billions of £s. Can you see them giving that back? NOT!.

Where on Earth did you get that bit of miss-information from?? Did you dream that up or what? Was that next to the story of the Thai government banning the eating of rice in the evening?

  16. Even with the increase in fairs EVA will still be cheaper than BA and the other direct London Bangkok flyers. If it was £200 more expensive than Thai I would still pay it. I have heard and experiensed nothing but good things about EVA. They wont be the only ones putting up there prices.

  17. Does anyone know anywhere that will show the last day of the championship season live this Sunday?

Checked the Supersport listings but nothing as yet. A friend of mine said that the "Samart" satellite system show Live games via Newsline channel.

Stoke Vs Leicester is the Live game on SKY TV back home, surely someone here will be showing it live?!

    Any help appreciated.

The UN Irish have South African satelite. If you have a kind word with either of the managers you might be able to get it shown on either of the 3 screens they have. However WETV(cable) will usually show most championship games that are live on Skysports. It will be on Supersports.

Please beat Leicster as I cant be a Cov fan if we are in the 1st division.
