  1. Just up a quick up-date if anyone's interested. There's still no water (Monday evening) and according to my wife they probably won't be able to fix the problem until the end of the week. This is Bangkok and many thousands of houses are affected in a big area including Klong San and Wat Khru Sang (Samut Prakarn). They're saying it's a major problem. I would have thought in this day and age any water supply problem could be sorted out in a few hours at most particularly in Bangkok. But apparently not!

  2. Woke yesterday morning to no water in the area where I live. And right now the water supply still hasn't been restored. A kind neighbor let my wife fill several large water bottles from her water tank to help us out last night. Everyone commenting on the situation. Saw workmen working on the problem about 800 metres from the house yesterday morning. Must be a major problem. Anyone else living here been affected likewise??

I was told years ago by a friend of mine that women are afraid to go to the police to report rape, like the police dont believe them and dont have trained officers to deal with rape victims, so a lot went un reported

I would imagine that something like ninety per cent of rapes and sexual assaults by taxi drivers go unreported. But could be wrong. Who knows! 99.99% of drivers being completely safe for female passengers I reckon.

  4. Have just visited two 7-11s in my area (in Bangkok but bordering Samut Prakarn) that are within walking distance of the house and they're both well stocked with booze. In fact I spoke to the manager at one and he said that beer would be available everyday from now on.  Nothing to worry about at least in Bangkok.

  5. As an earlier poster mentioned - this ten days could very well be extended. In fact I think it is highly likely it will be. The ban on alcohol sales could last several months. Also it makes a mockery of the whole thing when alcohol can still be bought in Pattaya from 6.00 AM until 6.00 PM. Very strong anti-alcohol lobby here that would prefer the country abstained from alcohol permanently. More control over the population.

  6. Incidentally if anyone knows where I can purchase a second-hand VCR (VHS video player/recorder) in Bangkok or Thailand for that matter then I would be very grateful. Tried Klong Thom and Ban Mo markets in Bangkok's Yoarawat district at the weekend with no success. Thanks.

Wanted to give an update on the Cassette tape transfer to DVD’s story.

600 baht per cassette no mention of mold....so if anyone needs this service I highly recommend the folks at Panthip Plaza 2nd floor

That's expensive. Last year I purchased a Walkman size/style portable cassette player which connects to a computer via its USB lead. Simply installed the program from the CD that goes with the cassette player - played the cassettes - and the analogue data on the tapes was automatically converted into a digital format on the computer's hard drive. The USB cassette player is available on Lazada for around 700 baht. Worked perfectly and I saved a lot of money transferring my old radio shows from cassette to digital.

  8. Incidentally I just happened to be drinking with some friends in New Plaza early last Wednesday evening and in the first bar (located in the central bar area) there was a particularly tiresome foreigner in his thirties who was shouting around and sitting on the bar counter occasionally. He wasn't threatening but just seemed to want to draw attention to himself for whatever reason. ("Come On! Come On! You can do it" You can do it!) Repeating this over and over again. Anyway - as expected - the atmosphere in the bar soon changed after his arrival and eventually he left on his own accord. This was after a few of the existing customers in the bar had paid their bills and gone. Drank at a couple of other bars there that evening and although it was busy everywhere I saw no trouble whatsoever. Left there around midnight for hotel.

  9. If I walk into a bar and the owner tells me the venue is closed, I tend to leave on my own accord without being asked.

If a 70 year old man walks into my bar and refuses to accept that the venue is closed, I tend to call the police instead of having my boy punch him in the face.

Bar owners (Thai and foreign) are reluctant to involve police in most matters with customers as this then draws the attention of the police to that particular bar as having had a problem. If this continues then the police could see that particular establishment as a "problem place" and accordingly demand more money from the owners. Anyway all the bars in New Plaza now have CCTV. At least two cameras in each bar.
