  1. I have never been to the Philippines. Is it a safe country to visit? I am a middle-aged woman travelling alone, and I like to walk around a lot. I don't go out after dark and I'm not interested in nightlife or anything like that. I am worried about muggings and violence in the streets. I have been to many other Asian countries. Should I consider the Philippines as a travel destination?

    Thank you.

You can obtain a tourist visa at any embassy or consulate, requirements are standard ones, specific ones you can check online or on location. So both KL and Penang. Normally nothing too difficult but long-term repeaters sometimes get issues in KL.

In fact the 60 day tourist visa is kind of useless, now you get 45 days on arrival already, that you can extend with 30 days...

The 45 days on arrival can be extended by another 30 days? How?

No problem. I stayed there about 12 years ago in low season. It was nice and quiet which I like.

I hope it comes back to what it once was. At least it seems to be taking a step in the right direction.

There has been a marked increase in visitor numbers this week and businesses that found it tough during Covid could get a bit of a boost. I hope so.

I stayed there for years in a row, I used to come every winter and stay for at least six weeks... It was a home away from home for me... I was there when this stupid Covid thing started...

    Thanks again!! ????????????

I was down that way this afternoon doing some shopping at Best Supermarket, so went for a nosey. They are open. However, see notice below. If you call the phone number they should be able to give more info.

The staff member I spoke to didn't know any more than was on the notice.

There was about 10 cars in the car park. Tonight and tomorrow night will be their busiest times.

I can't speak to Malaysia, but with regard to the Philippines, although it has a reputation for having poor quality food, my own experience has been that this reputation is undeserved.  Yes there is a lot of junk available, and that junk is popular there, but there are also healthy options especially soups and grilled meats /grilled seafood.

And if you're able/willing/interested in getting a place with a kitchen, that opens up a world of options as you can get fresh meats and produce from the market and prepare it to your liking.

In the Philippines I've never had trouble finding good food in the cities, both at restaurants and markets.  When I visit the province though and am not sure if there will be a chance to go to the market, I take some durable food with me such as canned sardines, tuna in water, imported corned beef, mixed nuts and other things that go well with rice, as on occasion I've had a few meals that just didn't sit right with me.  I have an aversion to organ meat (liver etc.) and they seem to mix that into dishes and sauces sometimes.

    Thank you.

Can you tell me if I can find hard-boiled eggs at convenience stores (in Thailand they have them)? I could survive on boiled eggs and butter (I assume I can find imported butter in supermarkets), sardines (if they are in water or extra-virgin olive oil) and corned beef, provided it has no added sugars, starches, oils or chemicals.

I have never been to the Philippines and if I go I can't stay more than 30 days, so obviously I will not be able to find a place with a kitchen. I have an electric skillet but I have never used it; I'll take it with me just in case.

Since you seem to know the country very well, can you tell me if it is safe to travel there? I am a middle-aged woman travelling alone and I like to walk around a lot (I don't go out after dark), is there a danger of muggings, that sort of thing? I was thinking of visiting Baguio, possibly Iloilo... not Manila.

I wish someone would give me information about food in Malaysia ????

    Thanks again ????

  6. I have not been to Malaysia for many years and I am planning to visit again this winter. I am worried that I will not find anything to eat. I keep a very restrictive diet for health reasons. In Thailand there is often grilled chicken or salmon in supermarkets, and hard-boiled eggs at 7Eleven. Am I going to find these things in Malaysia (in large cities)? Same question regarding the Philippines (I have never been there), in case somebody knows. Please advise. Thank you.

  7. I strongly suggest considering the VIP bus. it is now 294 baht and provides spacious seating. There is space to transport a wheelchair, although there are some stairs to climb to get on the bus. The limo services unless booked beforehand are ridiculously expensive. I booked from Bangkok to Hua Hin at 2000 baht. Aot at the airport has quoted me 5,000 -6,000 baht.

Do the VIP buses have a fixed schedule?...

I use a stun gun, just the noise makes animals scurry, very available in Thailand.

    And is it legal?

Could you tell me what it's called in Thai? Where can I buy one, and how much would it cost?

    Many thanks.

  9. I have a small can of pepper spray and I was thinking of taking it to Thailand with me, mainly because I am afraid of street dogs. I have been attacked by street dogs twice (once in Chiang Mai and once in Pattaya), several years ago... having pepper spray with me would make me feel safer. But I seem to understand that it is illegal to carry it with me, so I guess I'll have to leave it at home.

  10. BKK is mainly not a problem for single females. My daughter was there for 4 years , no probs.

You do need to be a bit careful about the basics such as deserted alleys etc. Get some good accommodation near the BTS or somewhere with easy access. Helps if you live near other colleagues who can join you on night trips. Try to avoid the taxis on your own or after dark. If you can't avoid, then text the license number to a reliable friend after you get in one. The driver details on the dash/window are mostly not the person driving, they often sublet the car or whatever. As cities go its better than some if you are sensible.

If you are a bit apprehensive you could get a small personal alarm and keep it in your bag/pocket or some pepper spray.

If you are worried about the random checks - keep a business card of someone "high up" at your school with you who is a Thai speaker, and if the police stop you tell them to call this person if they want to check you out.

Is pepper spray legal in Thailand? I remember reading a couple of years ago that it was illegal...

I have a small can of pepper spray and I am wondering whether I should take it to Thailand with me (I'm just coming as a tourist). I'm afraid I might get into trouble or have it confiscated if "the authorities" see it...

  11. Does anybody know if French TV channel Mezzo (classical music, opera, jazz) is now available in Thailand? They keep saying that they have started broadcasting in Asia, but I don't know if that includes Thailand...
