  1. I need to buy a 'decent' crash helmet, i.e. one that might actually offer some protection in an accident.

Anyone have any recommendations as to where to buy one and the likely cost?

    Thanks

  2. Well Stickman seems to have his finger on the pulse as usual!

    From his column yesterday:

    Immigration ease.

Good news for expats that are lucky enough to have a long term visa. When you go to Suan Plu immigration office for reporting your address every 90 days you no longer have to slog up to room 401 on the 4th floor. There are new rules now being used and you have to get a queue chit with a number from the information desk on the first floor then go to window number 6 and wait for your number to be called, if you forget to get a queue number and wait to talk to the women at the window they will send you back outside to get a number before talking to you. Still quick service as it only took about 3 minutes this week.

And, as if to prove he is the man in the know:

Perhaps it is just my mates, I don't know, but there is some fairly strong pessimism amongst a number of Westerners resident in Thailand, and it all revolves around the economy. All sorts of gloom and doom is predicted, although a lot of it is based on news and various articles in the English language newspapers which certainly don't paint the rosiest of pictures about the Thai economy. The one I have been hearing most recently is 100 baht to the US dollar by this time next year.

Now please do not mock, as the other week he announced that a Filipina is different from a Filipino so he does know what he talking about! :o

  3. I will have the same problem in the future but all is not lost. You are able to get rental incime paid gross if you fit the critera.

That still does not detract from the fact that the UK Revenue are a robbing load of gits.

Read the IR Form 150 and it will explain.

    IR 150 Here

Diolch Yn Fawr John, but do you have a more precise link?

As with all the Inland Revenue bureaucratic boll*cks you often have to refer to deleted statements with no guide to the one that supercedes.

Could you please post the latest sub-link?

    Cheers. :o

  4. If you qualify as a non-resident you are taxed in your country of domicile, i.e. no more UK tax.  :D My reading of this is that you need to be in LOS on a non-immigrant B with a work permit or on a retirement visa. I don't think a multi entry tourist visa will cut the mustard. Happy to be corrected if anyone here has experience to the contrary.

As far as I am aware, your visa status in Thailand has no bearing on your Tax status in UK.

‘Domicile’ can also be a misleading term as can ‘non-resident’ when it comes to financial rape.

You can declare yourself as ‘Non-Resident’ for UK Tax purposes and you may be able to get Bank/Building Society interest paid gross in UK, not that that means you will not be assessed on it. However, you will not be able to get around being taxed at source on UK Company Dividend Income. Tax Credits can only be used to help you avoid higher rate tax rates as far as I know but the pound (kilo?) of flesh is already gone.

Rental Income is the same. If an Agent knows you are out of the country from more than six months of the year, they are obliged to collect your rent and deduct tax at source. If the tenabts pay you, they are supposed to do likewisese (?).

22% was the last number I recall but have not checked recently.

Have a look at: We will shaft you! and go from there. :o

One piece of advice: NEVER contact the Inland Revenue with your details asking for advice as they will weld themselves to you…

The current rules are a moving target so anyone with up to date info please do share.

‘Stealth Tax’ is all the rage in UK from what friends tell me and that is for people who have no choice but to live there. I somehow doubt the Revenue will give incentives to those Brits with the sense to get out. I think it more likely they will eventually copy their supposed American ‘masters’ and deem all global income as arising in UK and therefore taxable.

    A chilling thought… :D

  5. /edit personal insult removed... you'll know  :o

the type of peeps that do eff all but drink in thailand, think they are "in the know" "wised up etc" but can't see that all they are doing is pouring money down the drain..i.e when their expat friends are selling their condo's for a nice profit and basically living rent free in pattaya

i'd be interested to know why a china man would sell to you, i'm guessing you are up on cantonese culture and language and that a china man(??) (guess u don't get shrewd chinese businessmen)  would sell you his condo that is in a farang name for less than the market price?? sure he would

post as many pages of property that you can darknight, from the way you have come accross in this thread, finding a 500000 baht condo in view talay is childs play(if that's the price)

so we all await the endless units that u can list....

or are u talking of prices of a couple of years ago? with your head so far up your arse that you've missed the increase in market prices?

with regard to another comment about paying the same for a condo as u would for a house, the incentive is that u can own it in your own name, no company, no registering in a thai's name etc

with a house unless u are married/ have a business in thailand then u will probably end up breaking laws and exploiting loop holes in the thai system

...if u have a thai wife or business already then a house is obviuosly more desireable

I agree with most of what is written above, but you will find that many condo's priced at what appears to be a discount is because the farang allotment has already been taken up and so you cannot own in your own name.

Of course that fact may not often be disclosed upfront.

Then people start going down the company route with company establishment costs and annual fees to consider for maintaining the company, plus of course similar problems when coming to sell.

If you buy a condo owned by a farang then that is fine. If you do not, then by and large you are in the same boat as a 'house owner'.

Btw, I also 'own' a house so do know the ins and outs of that scenario in terms of the mechanics and annual cost... :D

  6. Prices for a 48 sq.m 1 room Condo at about 2 Million Baht.

    WHoaaaaa hahahahahahaha . hahahahahahahaha....hahahahahahaha... :D

    Rotfl...

    $$$$$$$$$

Planning on making 1.5 mil Bath Sunny ????

A condo bare of 47 square meters cost you 500.000 bath. Completely furnished with a nice kitchen no more then 800.000.

Did you put in Gold plated walls ????

Darknight View Talay RESIDENCE is abt the price quoted.I think the half mil your talking abt is View Talay 1.I HATE SNOTTY REPLIES WHEN THEY'VE NOT CHECKED ANYTHING.FOOL.

Lived there for 7 months expatgz, :D

I know all how you get suckered in to believing it is that expensive :D never saw so many shady bum "real estate" agents in my life.

I'll buy one from the chinese owner for 500.000 and fix it up myself , that way i don't have to pay your overpriced yearly salary for doing nothing for the rest of the year. It would maximum cost 800.000 for 47 m² :D

Sorry to wreck your scam guy's , rip off some other people

    555555555555555555555555555

You seem to living in living in a dream world, Darknight.

    Denial perhaps? :o

I just sold two 37 m² units in View Talay 2 Bldg 'A' for 1.7 m Baht a piece having bought them off plan and had them refurbished to my spec. They cost 684,000 Baht each, less 7% for cash upfront.

I still own another three, and would be happy to sell you an annual two week Timeshare for 500,000 Baht per unit. :D

You really should get out more. :D

  7. I'm living in Thailand on a Non-Im O visa, support of wife.

She owns her own business and we live in the "shop house". As I'm around the house most of the time, what is an acceptable amount of "work" that I can do for her without risking trouble with immigration?

Obviously I'm not going to be putting in a full days work every day, but is it ok if I just lend a hand when she is run off her feet. I've told her to employ another person, but there really isn't enough work to give someone a full time job.

I just feel lousy telling her that I cant help her at all, and so she has to work so hard.

The simple answer as to what level of risk is acceptable can only be provided by you. How much do you value your current visa status?

Some Thai can be spiteful if they see a percieved farang supported business doing well.

Could your wife not organise some part time help as and when needed?

Best of luck, but watch your back.

  8. On my last few visits to Thailand,I am ashamed of myself for allowing myself to be ripped off. Back in february,i was standing at a food stall at 1am oppsite lumpini park, when a man came over, very good english, and friendly,"where u from",he says ,he then starts shaking my hand and talking to the food stall owner.

I start talking to him"you like thailand"he says etc.

He then pleads for me to buy him some food.At first i hesitate but then i said ok as he says Please. I thought its only 20 baht per stick .He picked 5 sticks, but then he says "what about my children"? and i said ok.he then gets more food sticks.

I pay 140 b to the stall owner. The man then thanks me laughing at me.

I then see him get into a black mercedas benz parked on the street and i see 2 kids inside,he bips his horn loudly as he drives off laughing.i feel like such a fool.

What would you have done in this case? How woul you have said no to him?

The second incident happened in a karaoke lounge where i was with a friend,2 girls started dancing with me,and i danced with them for about 10 mins.At the end of the night the bill arrrrrrived and it was 1200 b,i thought me and my friend had only 4 drinks? I queried with my friend,we spoke to the manager he told us that there were 4 other drinks for his 2 staff girls who had danced with me plus ice in the glasses .I didnt ask the girls to dance with me nor did they mention drinks.

Also i got a taxi from airport to pattaya,he said 1200 b,he then starts driving near the airport down a road past a hotel and stops outside a limo company,"here you get limo",he says ,"you pay me 200 b,now get out"

I get out and speak to the limo driver he says its 1800 b to pattaya.

I get angry"why am i being ripped off all the time?

I start walking back to the main road to hail another taxi, which i must say was a good driver this time who took me.

Another incident was in Suringwongse rd where i got into a taxi and said Lumpini park nnot knowing it was around the corner, the driver was a mean looking man and didnt put the meter on."you pay me 100 b ok"? he says.

I said it would only be about 20b? "He sais"i know but you rrich,i very poor"

He sounded very mean, like in a voice that was commanding.

"YOU UNDERSTAND! he says 100 baht! i nodded and as we turned the corner i gave him 100 b .He then drove off before i had closed the door laughing.

I would seriously think about getting the tattoo removed from your forehead. :o

Just going by your handle, are you from Singapore? :D

  9. I'm with you on this, but then I have always been an early riser.

    <SNIP>

I am also an early riser but I get rid of it by shagging the Mrs or walking it off once I have set my aim on the toilet bowl and let go. No more than eight steps in time with the lagging trajectory power and all I need do is shake the drops off and go back to bed.

Perhaps I should try that routine on the Electric Man if he is daft enough to come to my house at such a stupid and unsocial time. :D

Just to clarify, I would only piss on him... :o

  10. One of the things I like about Thai's is that they are not afraid to speak their mind.

    <SNIP>

To your face or behind your back? :o

Have no time to wade through the thread at present but will do later. Sorry if the above obvious question has already been posed.

  11. I live up country and I am semi retired. If he came to my door at that time and woke me up I would offer him a cool drink and some food and thank him.

    Why?

    1) Because it is polite

    2) because I can always find something to do (even if it is logging onto tv)

    3) if he is knocking on my door at that time he must have got up early to do so and it would not have been his idea.

    4) at least it would save my wife a trip to the village or wherever it has to be paid

    5) I know him and he is a nice guy anyway and so is the man who comes with the water bill and also the trash man.

I  don't have to work or beat on peoples door to get 2 or 3 hundred baht but somebody has to, and if it makes his day a little better, why not, and it is only once a month anyway.

I could wake the wife but she is not really a morning person and she gets a bit crabby before her first coffee.

    Good grief...! :o:D

why not go the whole hog and invite them to come live with you phil !

Errm, I think you meant billd766?

If anyone came chasing money at my house at that unearthly hour, I would 'politely' set the dogs on the intrusive idiot.

  13. There followed a few minutes of frantic activity behind the counter and then the young girl said, in perfect English to us all:  "  Ladies and Gentlemen, I apologise to you for that rude man's behaviour and you might like to know that we have cancelled his extension and when he tries to leave Thailand he will be arrested as an overstayer"  The room actually burst out in spontaneous applause !!

No moral or point to the story, just thought it was interesting and you might like to hear it.  Pete.

    Jackanory, Jackanory, Jackanory:

    jackanory1.jpg

Storytelling had been introduced into children’s television from the earliest days of broadcasting when author, lecturer and broadcaster Paul Leysacc read tales from Hans Christian Anderson as part of the series For The Children (1937-39 and 1946-50). Later still, Johnny Morris had his own segment in Playbox, where he appeared as The Hot Chestnut Man, standing by a barrow of roasting chestnuts as he related his own self-penned stories. But by far the most popular and enduring storytelling series of all was the BBC’s wonderful Jackanory, although throughout its history it was not without its critics.

OK, it could be true but...

    :o:D:D

  14. I know there is a road that links the Sukhumvit Highway to the 331, a bit before Ambassador City heading south from Pattaya.

It may well be signposted, but can anyone give me a landmark for the left turn just in case?

    Thanks.

    Phil

It's not at all well sign posted.

You know that S-bend on the slight downhill run on Sukhumvit just before the flat straight stretch leading up to the Ambassador... well, on the left hand side on the first turn in the S is the connecting road.

    Thanks Jai Dee, much appreciated.

    You're welcome. :D

From memory there's a 24 hour convenience store on the corner... usually a few motorcycle taxis and baht busses hanging around.

It's not a road I use often... usually only when I'm returning from playing golf at either Pattaya Country Club or Burapha.

That is quite a coincidence as I only found that road when returning from playing golf at Pattaya Country Club!

It was pure luck really as I thought I would just take the chance to see if there was a way to avoid the Sukhumvit rush hour. Also, the reason I wanted clarification was because I was thinking of going that way to get to Burapha Golf Club!

I believe that Burapha is some way past Pattaya Country Club heading north on the 331. As I live off Thepprasit, I thought I could again avoid the grief of the Sukhumvit highway traffic and perhaps save some time.

How far past Pattaya Country Club is the turn to Burapha and roughly how far from South Pattaya is Burapha using that route?

Apologies for the barrage of questions and thanks again for sharing your knowledge. :o

  17. It was a January Thursday,

    <KIND SNIP>

To be continued - that's enough typing for one session.

I take it you have read of Martin Luther King? You were clearly too young to be apprised of his assassination when it happened.

    He also had a dream.

However, his was not as wet as yours, it would appear.

Did you go to bed one night with a problem on your mind and then awake with a solution on your stomach?

Your disjointed ramble was irritating at best from the start as it was painful to read, purely from the construction (or lack of it). The content was worse.

As I struggled on, all soon became clear as I surmised you may have been listening to your Dad’s ‘Crime of the Century’ album.

Was your imaginary conquest known as ‘Supertramp’, perchance?

Fiction or fantasy aside as it was clearly not fact, before you try and write any more (please do not...) get a basic grasp of punctuation and sentence construction.

Your misuse of the colon, semi-colon and ellipsis was almost as infuriating as sentences exceeding 200 words in length that only ceased when you hit the full stop key, probably by mistake.

Also, please discover the merits of a spell-check facility.

If you really fancy yourself as becoming a writer, please reconsider as it will all end in tears if your first effort is anything to go by. I refer to those running down your cheeks in addition to the inevitable contents of your waste bin.

You obviously thought your missive would be well received?

If that was the case, why did you have such a low opinion of the intelligence of the members here?

Full marks for trying, but I would call it a day now. :o

  18. I notice Dr Pat Pong and others have said 'sawas dee bee mai', happy new year, for Songkran.  But I seem to remember a conversation with a Thai who either told me this was Not the correct thing to say during Songkran, or that I should not refer to Songkran as new year.  I can't remember which, or was it both?

    Or am I imagining it?

(Been away from LOS for a while and can't remember).

    Sawat dee pii mai

    Sawat dee wan Songkhran

I've heard both forms used by Thais at Songkran

Because they are synonymous, according to my hi-so Thai neighbour. Believe me, she is never wrong, with the possible exception of her choice of neighbour... :o:D

  19. I have been told and am hoping that with a "Statement of Residency" from the US Embassy that I can avoid having to have all of the "Stuff" from my landlord, such as copies of their house papers, ID cards, ect...

I do have both a valid US DL and an International one...  Plus 1year "OA" retirement visa...

    Anyone care to comment???

    Pianoman

As long as it has you Thai address you will be fine.

However Limbo does have a point about the fees.

The immigration letter is free. How many arms and legs does the US embassy charge??

At Pattaya Immigration Office, the charge for each certificate of residence is 200 Baht.
