  1. Phew!! Glad all that's over, getting to old for this house moving caper. :D The actual moving was a doddle compared with getting 3BB to bring me back on line. :) But all's well that ends (fingers crossed!) well.

    Sawasdee Khrup, Khun ToonBroon,

Happy Housewarming ! Glad to hear it ended well.

    best, ~o:37;

Thanks my friend Khun 'O ' your kind wishes are much appreciated. It's sentiments such as yours that makes the tv experience endurable. :D

    As always..,

  2. Finished 3 of Michael Palin's so far, seen them before apart from Himalaya, but still wonderful, what a great character he is.

Now I've started getting quality documentaries, TV dramas etc, I really have no use for UBC....everything seems so sub standard.

I've seen everything on there a dozen times and the movies are absolute crap. It would be history right now except the wife likes BBC news and at present Premier League coverage is very good......with English commentary.......but oh, those Thai pundits. :)

I love his stuff too... so unpretentious and gifted - what a lucky fella! not so sure about your sweeping statements about UBC - I love the history channel and discovery - there is still some good stuff on there and eventually you will run out of docs... alas...

Ahem!! Not if I've got anything to do with it!! :D

Now you can get back to the 'serious' stuff!

    Glad all went well.

    You betcha!! :D

  4. I watched the first three episodes of Himalaya with Michael Palin yesterday.

Top notch quality and Michael, really is great...so watchable.

I have to force myself to turn it off otherwise I'll finish it the same day!

I watched 'Around the World in 80 Days' in 2 days :D You're right, very addictive viewing, and i have forced myself to stay clear of the DVD player today so that i can get on with other stuff :D Can't believe that series is 21 years old, which makes it more interesting today than when if first came out due to the changes around the world since that time.

Nice to see you guys enjoying the fruits of my labour! I have added quite a lot more (movies, travelogues, tv shows etc) from my collection to the index which I will let you have in a day or two. First I have the job of house switching to take care of this weekend. :D

Trust you to get your priorities wrong! :D

A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do....and what her indoors orders of course!

Talking of DVD quality, a friend loaned me a (Night Bazaar) version of Iron Man 2 the other day, what a load of crap! (Can I say that?) Leaving the picture quality to one side (and that where it should be left) the more entertaining of the experience where the sound effects. From the asmatic in the front row, the potato chips munching in the seat to the left and the contstantly sniffing nose behind! And then during the funny bits of the movie the barrel-effect giggles just about completed the agony. Oh, nearly forgot, the guy in front with the weak bladder. Ah well, TIT I guess! :)

  7. TB, sounds like an impressive collection. I do a little D/L myself but delete them after watching them, unless its a good one.

i must add, sometimes our beloved internet in CM/Thailand isnt so bad afterall. Most ISPs in NZ have a cap on downloads, unless you can pay for it uncapped, which ends up being an expensive hobby

Here we can torrent to our hearts content.

Yes you're right Donny, unfortunately I'm the perverbial magpie just love to hoard!! Must have around 4-500 mostly AVIs but easy to convert to DVD if required. Struggling through the indexing... but getting there!

  8. Hi, may just be able to help you out there Drew. I have been downloading movies, TV shows etc for a couple of years, now starting to index them albeit a tad late! All are excellent quality and many are 2009/2010.

If you're interested, pm me and I'll send you the index as it stands at the moment. If you can't see what your looking for, let me know, maybe I haven't added it yet. Just the answer for those rainy nights!

BTW I have both the Michael Palins you're looking for.

    Cheers

  9. Went to the UN Irish a few days ago with my date - JEEZE the Thai staff are terrible - miserable and nasty

What's the matter with the management? I asked if they had any Guinness left and this older girl pointed to a sign which said Guinness was finished (which I knew but wondered if they had any barrels left) so I was about to have a draft bitter but she was so off-putting I just walked out.

I know TIT but I rarely get this reaction in other establishments in CNX and it was so unusual it took me aback.

Maybe it would further your cause and our curiosity if you were to elucidate in what manner "the Thai staff are terrible - miserable and nasty". You mention only one particular member of staff yet you state "the Thai staff" insinuating all of the staff, including the management. :)

As has been said so often on this Forum "everyone has off days", even the most ardent and well-meaning of our hard working and underpaid bar/restaurant staff, whether it is part of their job description or not. I am sure, if you were to be honest, which I don't doubt you are, you could look back and relate the odd occasions when you would have fitted that description. We all could! But as someone has pointed out, to condemn the entire establishment out of hand because of this isolated incident would seem somewhat hypocritical and grossly unfair. :D

    Cheers,

  10. All I will say is, don't get involved in feuds that don't concern you. That Karma stuff is a mother......! :D

Ah! So it was a feud! The plot thickens. And thanks for your advice (or was it a warning?) Whatever UG, I acknowledge your wisdom on such local shady matters my lips are sealed. :)

  11. "The Pub.

Food is good and good value, but the staff are the most unfriendly that I have ever experienced in Chiang Mai, with a take it or leave it attitude and as far as the owner's concerned if you don't like it, go somewhere else."

Strange this is the first negative report I have read on 'The Pub' for many a year. Granted there haven't been that many reports pertaining to The Pub in that time and what there have been have all been of a neutral context. I for one have had many a pleasant night propping up the bar and admiring the cheerful, efficient and endearing bar staff. Maybe you caught them (or them you) on a bad night. :D

It would be interesting to know how many times, previous to the fateful visit, you had been to The Pub, since your comments are of a pretty damming nature and critisising local businesses without sufficient cause and full explanation is usually frowned upon in this Forum.

I'm sure everyone would be interested to hear about your experience, especially the owner. So why not give him the oppotunity to have his say on the matter. :)

    Cheers

  12. I'm now officially confused who Kevin Hunt is.. Not Matthew?

If I'm correct, Kevin Hunt is Kevin Hunt and Matthew got the boot many moons ago. He started his own place that never caught on despite his great expertise in marketing.

    Matthew got the boot!! :D

Hope he wasn't a victim of the "No riff-raff" policy :D

Used to like Matthew, thought he was a nice bloke, certainly boosted the sales with all the 'admirers' he attracted.

    Any idea what went amiss?

Tell me it wasn't because he didn't charge for water...uups! :)

  13. UG is right, weekends especially can be very congested with Thai visitors. It's never been a place that has done anything for me but it certainly has a cultish type attraction for many. And now with an influx of up-market accomodation the typical tourist now reflects a more affluent backpacking breed.

  14. Don't forget the Holiday Inn, as well.

These are the places that I go every year. They consistantly do a good job and many new residents have not heard about them. Merry Christmas!

    Same to you! :)

You are correct, equally they probably haven't heard about the Olde Bell, The Pub, The Red Lion, O'Malleys, Tuskers etc etc and many of the newer establishments all trying to make their way in this highly competitive world of eateries and of course many of the latest hotels to hit town, all of which would, no doubt, benefit from a timely mention.... anybody??

  15. You didn't put The Dukes on the list U.G.? I'm surprised.

Also I don't see The Pub. Were by far the best in town, 'though I do hear they have switched from the delicious hand cut/made to the French fries model..Sacrilege!! What price cost-cutting. :)

  16. so who's got info how to destroy them.

I hear a wee dram o' two of toonbroon will give 'em somethink to think ov!!

But mind not ower much, cos they might just get the taste and keep coming back for more!

Maybe they're part of the fan club yu've been solicitating via ur hip op posts. Rock on...but carefully ok!

    Cheers,

PS Hey, What's that thing Joe H. is holding in his hands? If we're lucky this yor it might just be a bottle o coke wil be shuvin'-up-a-height! :)

  18. Could someone give me further directions for the new place.

Is it south of the city ? how far ? past the sheraton ?

Go south past the Holiday Inn (ex Sheraton), under the Superhighway (Mahidol Road) past the Adventure Hotel on your right and about 1 km further down the Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road the 89 Plaza is both on your left and right. (Just before the Nong Hoi Police Station). At night it's a hive of activity and difficult to miss. The Nang Nual and Yamamoto's are on the left and the New Miguel is on the right.

As Winnie says it is becoming a very interesting little center with good cheap Thai food for lunch and dinner from several small restaurants. I believe there is also now a night market and a Beer Garden.

  19. Wasn't to impressed with the Nang Nual, but loved Yamamoto's sushi buffet.

Anyone know if this will also be at the new place ?

I think Yamamoto's is already open next door to the soon-to-be new Nang Nual

  20. Anyone any news of when the new Nang Nual Restaurant will be opening along the Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road in the Chiang Mai 89 Plaza (Op. Miguel's)? They seem to have been working on it for an age. The banner across the road says "March 14th". Maybe they mean April 14th. Hope the food is an improvement on its predecessor, unfortunately the view will not.
