I doubt my husband saw me as a "status symbol" when he met me. IN fact, most locals wondered why he married a farang when he comes from quite a well-to-do family. When we met it wasn't the "in" thing to have a farang girlfriend, and now, among the beach boys, it is so common it is hardly a status thing. So, I  disagree with you boys on that one, I think Thai men have a far higher status in their society than farang men with Thai wives so why would they feel the need to recompense for their status?

Personally I think most Thai men who have farang girlfriends (and are serious about it) do so because they like the differences from Thai women. My husband appreciates the fact that I am independent and do not rely on him for everthing (Toukay in the bathroom? big deal. Our female Thai staff run out screaming, even though they have lived around these things their whole lives), he appreciates the fact that I do not nag, do not complain (his mother is a nagging complainer so I guess that is where that comes from). He likes my willingness to express my own thought-out opinions and appreciates the fact that when I disagree I state it clearly without the need for any manipulation or subterfuge. He likes the fact that his wife is educated and knowledgable.

Now, I am not saying you won't find Thai women with these qualities, certainly I am sure they exist. BUT, I live in a very rural area, where the education level is quite low, and my husband was not interested in a girl who could not communicate with him on his level. 

So, lucky for him, he got me 

Wolfie, I don't think he is being racist so much as sexist. See, he has decided that all thai men are pigs when that can hardly be true. He is probably just one of those people who likes to make broad generalizations based on limited experiences.

Your case is an exception if you dont make a hype. It’s great for your hubby when he has you-his wife always say something good about him. Anyway, in my limited experience; almost of nice Thai men like all girls but when they think again they prefer the nice Thai girls esp. the Thai-Chinese girls with white skin and high education. However, I found that some like farang girls but only the minority not as many as beach boys or gigolos do. I think time will prove if this is true love or it’s just an illusion between Thai men and farang girls. As the love stories here-Thai men and farang girls seems to be disaster!

Some Thai men, not all, such as beach boys or slight educated Thai men think having farang girlfriends make themselves cool. They feel that they can find something to recompense for their status in society. Any comment???

Why is everybody defending the Muslims?

We keep hearing that they don't want "infidels" or churches on the Arabian Peninsula and that anyone found there should be killed and bombed ... and yet we should allow them to stay everywhere building moskes, putting out loudspeakers so we have to hear their wailing every 4 hours (yes, even here in Pattaya).

Thanks for unsubstantial history lesson but how long have you been in Thailand? Sorry the story (i wont call history) in 1988 isn't about insurgents but about no man land thing. There were no rebellions against Thailand in Issarn, the Vientiane got a freedom from France and the Laos rebels fight against their own government not Thai governement. You don't really know what you're talking about, Covertjay. Regarding situation in the Deep South, There are hidden agenda and something deeper than what you learn from your Thai friend, mate.

There were rebellions in Issarn untill the end of the 19th century when half the population was wiped out and Vientiane burnt to the ground (and the emerald-actually Jade- Buddha stolen from the original Wat Pra Keaow).

A brief war with Lao in 1988 over insurgents and Chavalit's wife's land grab across the border.

Chiang Mai and Nan had SEPERATE kings and were independent until 1930.

Thai official history is naive and made to look like they haven't been raiding, stealing, murdering, and taking slaves since Angkor fell in 1431. Many countries have done this kind of thing but then most of them admit it.

They churn out false history because if Thais knew the truth they would loose a ton of face in the region.

As a Thai friend told me "a nice lie is better than the difficult truth".

Regional Autonomy does sounds good. After all, the region was once the great Pattani Sultanate, before it went into decline and was then annexed by Thailand in the early 20th century.

I guess It would probably make sense for Thailand to sort of semi - section off the southern areas, like England does with Wales and Scotland. But it will still be part of a "Greater Thailand"........

The situation in the Deep South is complicated and not the same as in England. There are many more problems and underlying conditions occur there. The Majority of Muslims in the Deep South do not want their Autonomy but the Muslim terrorists are exploiting those problems in an effort to seek their support and achieve their objectives and goals. It's not fair to blame Thai government.Thai government have fully supported all thai communities including Muslims. Give them all freedom of the way of life, freedom to practice their religion, their educational system-religious school etc, etc. These terrorists kill mostly innocent people, teachers, students, monks, buddhists and their own brothers muslims. All of them have nothing to do with the terrorists. Not these terrorist want only Autonomy, but they also want to protect their illegal interests and criminal activities as well as their local politics etc. Thai goverment treats their people in the same way. Looking at people in the Northeast of Thailand, they do not have much resources - no sea, a few forests, a lot of drought etc. Why are they still living their life peacefully?

If i were you, i would follow lopburi3's advice. Things are still unstable in that area. Even the Malaysian Govt are telling their malaysian people to stay away from that border especially now coz it is the moslim festive season.

But for hadyai - sadao, so far no problem from what i have seen.

Anyway, if you still prefer a speedy visa than a safe one. I wish you luck and please becareful.

And do avoid going on a Friday, most riots or anything violent action by the moslim will happen after their friday prayers in the afternoon.

The unrest in the Deep South still continues. There is one western guy killed this year while he was walking around. The Muslim insurgents do kill anyone, anywhere and anytime when they have a chance. So I advise you exercise precaution if you like to get through there.

Well, taxi drivers also think Americans are 40 times richer than Thais, Europeans 50 times and Brits 80 times as those are the current exchange rates.

So to answer the question: I don't think so.  If anything, class/background is the deciding factor. There are some seriously poor/rural people living arounf Chiang Mai and the North and I doubt they're significantly different from poor/rural people up North East or elsewhere.  Same for the middle/upper class.  Chiang Mai does seem to have a middle class that's bigger than most other places, which is good.  You see less really rich and really poor people.  Again, just my perception and it could be wrong, I haven't researched it.

Does anyone know if anywhere plays decent hard house/ hard trance/techno late at night?

By this I don't mean Lucifers, Nana Disco, Marine and the likes, I mean the kind of stuff is difficult to buy and doesn't make it onto Top of The Pops like that 'castles in the sky' rubbish. They seem to put it on in Lucifers everytime I go in there.

After living in BKK for a few years I have given up searching. If anyone could help, I'd be grateful.

You can go to Bed Superclub, Sukhumvit Soi 11 esp. on Mon and Sat, or Code bar, RCV or Cafe democ, democracy monument. They play decent house. However, it's sad the majority of Thais do not go to those clubs or listen to decent music, they prefer some rubblish pop music. By the way, if you go to Samui island, you can check out at Mint Bar, Soi Green Mango, Chaweng. This club is brilliant!

I'm after original (not fakes) of CDs/DVDs by the likes of Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple etc etc.  Does anyone know of a particular store that stocks this genre of musis, or must I search through the 1000s of wishy-washy, Thai love-song karaokee CRAP until I discover the occasional CD?

Check out at Doramee in Siam Square. The shop owner is very nice and has many kinds of CDs. You can also check out at CD warehouse in Siam discovery. There are a lot of CDs there but quite expensive.

Getting back to the question asked, Sigur Ros. 

I think if you just be your good, charming self you will have some luck with the ladies.  If you are clean ( that's a big one for me), can hold a normal conversation (judging from the english used in your post, you can) and have a good sense of humour you will be fine. 

There's nothing worse than someone pretending to be someone or something they are not. 

Just because you are Thai doesn't mean you have to like Thai women.  Look at all the farang men here who don't like farang women. 

You should also remember that we are not all dominating cows like many of the farang men on this site think!  Some of us are actually genuine, funny and have good advice to give.  Just read some of the replies from the girls on this board.

Thank you for cheering me up Donna. From my own experience, I can say that almost Thai men ( may be not beach boys) are quite shy and afraid of denying when we try to approach farang girls. Even if farang girls sometime make eye contacts with, we are still humble and make up our mind that farang girls look at someone else.

I have read many topics here. They are really interesting. I have to confess that I'm interested in farang girls. It's not because I cannot find thai/asian girls or making me proud when having farang girlfriends. It's just from my own taste-my heart-my mind. When I occasionally see farang girls, I just feel good about. But the problem is, I do not really know if some farang girls like thai men- I have just seen many being with farang men. Is it weird if thai men come to talk to farang girls.

I am proud that you have " had many experiences living here ". No doubt there are some locals who consider you a " walking wallet " where you have been to. But being badmouthing to the Thais like you have been is tantamount to creating a hundred enemies. You can not live here without a majority of Thais,unless you leave and will not return.
