  2. These officers lurk outside office buildings and shopping centers, waiting for a farang to light up. They stalk these farangs like prey until they discard the butt onto the filthy footpath or sewer. The lack of trash bins makes this a very lucrative operation.

About a dozen of these 'police' work the hotel district on Sukhumvit.

Each one bring in about 6,000Bt per hour.

    That's over 500,000 per shift.

Similar operations are run on Silom, Kow San, Grand Palace, etc.

These guy make more then the police that run the jet ski scam.

They have set up a desk between soi 17 and 19 on Sukhumvit Rd. I pass it regularly. It's only there during office hours. There is a notice behind the desk saying it's an offense to littler and the fine is 2,000 bht. I keep trying to get a picture but due to it's position it's not easy.I see farngs getting shaken down all the time there.

  3. After a couple of times you get used to the maze. It's the Air Asia virgins pay who pay with blood (forgive the horrible pun). It takes me about 5 minutes now from logging on to signing off with my itinerary in hand.

And I wouldn't knock them for trying to make a buck. All considered they're heckuva deal; moreover, on-time, a great safety record and the cutest crews on the planet.

Have to agree that AirAsia have the destinations. I have always enjoyed the experience once i've negotiated the website. I tried to check-in using my iphone. A Thai version of their website came up that didn't offer an English version. There's no link i could see to download their app from their website although it's advertised. I downloaded from itunes store only to find it was faulty.

Their interface with the customer via the internet is a bloody nightmare.

  4. I still use them purely because they offer a good choice of destinations but hate their website. It takes about 15 minutes to book a flight with Air Asia, I would guess. You can book with Nok Air, Orient Thai and Bangkok Airways in no more than five minutes.

Takes me less than five minutes each time. UbonOz has it right.

Much preferred their websites but trouble for me is they fly out of Don Muang.

  5. This is driving me nuts!!

I'm trying to book a flight to Phuket with Air Asia. I get to the page where i can select a seat. I see i am automatically being charged 374.50 BHT this corresponds to the price for a Hot Seat. I don't want a Hot Seat, just the cheapest seat possible. When i change my selection an additional charge is levied. <deleted>??!!

  6. Q Bar is primarily a gay bar. The "Q" stands for "queer". Yes, they do tolerate women. However, they will welcome you with more open arms if you turn up with a couple of good-looking Thai boys on your arm. I have always wondered how people don't seem to realize how very gay this bar is. Good luck.

Q = Kieu, as in "The Tale of Kieu" (Vietnam). The first Q Bar was under the Opera House in Saigon. Same owner. Don't know where you got queer from.

I can confirm this. I've been to both, nothing 'queer' about either.

  7. You are probably seeking a tourist visa good for a 60 day stay. Of course that is available at the Thai embassy in Denmark.

You can likely be allowed to board the airplane in Denmark to Thailand on a one way ticket and also no problem entering Thailand.

HOWEVER, the embassy requires you have either a RT ticket or proof of travel outside Thailand to grant you the visa in the first place! For example an air ticket to Malaysia.

    1 copy of round-trip ticket

    - showing into and out of Thailand, or

    - Evidence of travel from Thailand

    http://www.thaiembas..._visa_danes.htm

I just received a tourist visa from the Embassy in London and i didn't need to show proof of onward travel. Just passport, two photos, application form and the fee.

  8. I don't get it. If i add an appointment to Events say, a meeting in Bangkok while i'm in London. Of course it's local time. Why is there any need to change the time according to where i am? Just leave the time i enter alone!!

Now, when i check my calendar all my meeting times outside of Thailand have changed to Thai time. What is the point in that? Why do i need the time of a meeting in Riyadh to be displayed in Thai time while i'm Thailand? Why is that useful to anyone?

  9. I've got a problem which has just started recently.

In Calendars/Events how to set Start/End times so they always appear in local times? I travel quite a bit and when i change my time zone Event times change. How to rectify this?

I've asked my question on several dedicated iphone forums but haven't had an answer yet.

    Cheers for any help

  10. Perhaps somebody can "buy" them from you before you leave? A bit unconventional but might be convenient and with not too high a vig. Co-worker, local contact, etc?

I had considered that but unfortunately i have mainly Lebanese co-workers who only have Lebanese pounds-no use to me.

  11. whistling.gif As I mentioned in my previous post the reason is....that the Saudi government has set a very low offical exchange rate for Saudi Riyals outside of Saudi Arabia.

ALL U.K., U.S., and European banks will get this official exchange rate when they accept Riyals and try to clear them through their Saudi bank partner....and that's why any bank or moneychanger outside of Saudi Arabia will never give you a good exchange rate....because they would lose money if they did give you a better rate than the Saudi government official exchange rate.

Whether that's a "scam" or not depends on your point of view....but it's still a fact...it's just a part of life in Saudi Arabia.

I once found a money exchange place in Jeddah just outside the international airport and exhanged my Riyals for 10 $100 bills a few hours before my flight from Jeddah to Bangkok.....so I know the problem.

That's why I say...try VERY hard to find an exchange place either in or near the airport before you leave Saudi Arabia...or be prepared to accept a low exchange rate otherwise.

Thanks. I'm definitely going to try to get them changed before leaving. Otherwise i'm going to get fleeced! sad.png

  12. I'll be picking up my expenses on Thursday afternoon and Friday is a Sunday in KSA. So i wont be able to get to the bank as i leave on Saturday morning.

I've just had a quote from a bureau de change in the UK and for 13,000 SR they will give me 1,999 GBP. At todays exchange rate it's 2207 GBP, thats 208 pounds less!!

I know you never get the official exchange rate anywhere but thats a difference of 9.42%!!

    Daylight robbery

The Al Rajeh Exchange places are open 7 days a week to late in the evening. They'll be open on Thursday and Friday, try after sunset prayer and before last prayer.

Cheers for that, i'll look into it.

  14. Due to circumstances beyond my control, i will be arriving back in the UK and needing to change cash. I've got Saudi Riyals.

I'm never usually in this situation but this time there's no way round it. Has anyone used the foreign exchange counters at Heathrow, a high St. bank or other, to get the best rates?

I don't think the best rates will be at the airport. I was ripped off by a high St. bank when changing money years ago and don't really know which other options are worth considering.

Doesn't help that i don't spend a lot of time in the UK. ;)

    Cheers for any info.

  15. I'm in the UK for a couple of weeks before returning to Thailand and i want to buy a new ipad.

I've been away from Thailand for a while now so not sure about prices etc.

Apart from the obvious question is it cheaper to buy in Thailand or the UK, are there any disadvantages to consider?

    Any info gratefully received.

  16. I don't want to highjack this thread but looks like the OP has had his answer.

I have a similar problem but was wondering after i have transfered the money, how much would i need to leave in the account to keep it open?

I'm with Bangkok Bank and i can't pop in and ask, i'm outside the country.

    Cheers

BBL have a pretty good website. Why did you not go there?

    http://www.bangkokba... questions.aspx

    Point 14 is very clear.

Thanks for posting that. Looks like 2000 baht will keep the account open without any charges.

    Cheers

  17. Having spent time in the Philippines where it seems, everyone puts ice in their beer i got rather used to it.

I'm also of the opinion these days that anything that dilutes my alcohol intake is a good thing.

The regular brands of beer are pretty much crap anyway. Heineken, Singha etc. are the McDonalds of the beer world. Can't see that adding ice is spoiling much, not like you're adding it to a great glass of wine, is it?!

It all comes down to personal taste i suppose
